the worden house on west gray was the worden apartments in the fifties, and more than likely the name of the original tenants of the home.
as far as places like tara, i don't think the more well-known folks had to etch their name over the front door

Trying to locate historical data & photos for the following:
Ripley House {?}
Rittenhouse {?}
Julia Ideson Bldg. {?}
Houston Lighting/Power Bldg. downtown
there is a neat houston lighting and power substation on 2501 polk st., just east of downtown
ripley house is gone (replaced) - 4410 navigation (neighborhood centers, inc. ripley house, now)
there was an incarnation of the Rice Hotel for about a year (before it closed) called the Rice-Rittenhouse - is that what you're talking about?

That NPR story this morning got me to wondering...
They mentioned this commission might be offering tax reprieves in exchange for a historical status. Could that have been the end game? Historical status isn't that easy to get I think, and the ROT is not THAT old, or THAT significant. Maybe they planned the "demolition" to get a public outcry to save the theater, and therefore...taxes.
Too much conspiracy theory???
whaaa?
national register status has tax breaks too - i don't think they were "bargaining" - more or less reminding these folks that there are financial incentives to keeping properties like these upright.
for historical status, the property must be fifty years old (and there are exceptions) and be associated with something "significant" (architecture, event, person, and so forth).
it wouldn't be that hard to at least nominate the property - the hard part would be getting weingarten to go along with it

Loma linda is on Wayside and 45. I used to know the owner...Haven't been there in awhile.
there is a loma linda on telephone and des jardines - it doesn't have the neat old sign, though

That was Trader Vic's, and I loved it too. It was fun to watch those Polynesian cooks chopping and cutting up your food right there at your table.
i didn't know this until recently, buyt trader vic's is still around, and supposedly going to open up shop again in houston (not sure what incarnation of vic's this is, though...).
There's still a Wyatts Cafeteria on Griggs just south of OST. For all I know it's the last one left on earth. We used to eat at the one on Spencer Highway in Pasadena all the time when I was younger.last one in houston, but i think there's also one somewhere in dallas

But my entry is "Surface Lot Replacement Park", or "NAMBLA".

i kinda like the imagery that the word 'mission' sums up ... kinda old west, mexican ... i dunno ... it 'felt' very organic to me.
it has a nice ring to it -
as far as Mexican Restaurants, Inc., though, it reminds me of the oddity of the taco bell/kfc/pizza hut parent company name: Yum! Brands, Inc.

i have never eaten at any of MRI's establishments (as far as i can remember), so i can't comment on the quality of food, but the parent company's name sounds very generic and definitely not local (although i noticed one of the chains is only in michigan).
anyhow, i think it would serve better to change the corporate name - make it more "home-y."

Harris County appraisal website describes some properties as "Cost and Design Partial ". Does this mean the house was built below average standard?
i have noticed that too, and asked about some of their abbreviations here on the forum, with not much luck.
i have seen cost and design=extensive, which leads me to believe that maybe the "partial" houses aren't below standard, but maybe just not anything fancy...

"The Target Center" in Minneapolis and "The Staples arena" are two examples of what could be worse.
Personally, MMP, has grown on me.
i will always be partial to the astrodome
nowadays, the worst for me (including petco) are U.S. Cellular Field (White Sox) and Safeco Field (Mariners)
-
Sounds too much like Petco Park. The name of the MLB stadium; I forgot for which team. Petco Park is the most awful name for a studium, in my opinion.
I would like the name Hoffheinz for the Astrodome hotel. The Hoffheinz Hotel.
san diego padres
and is studium on purpose or one of those slips?

It would take away from the uniqueness of the Kemah area.
not to mention the strand...

Katz's Deli owner Barry Katz is opening the first spin-off of his New York-style deli in The Woodlands.
Katz's Express, located at 19075 Interstate 45 North in the Portofino Center, will open on Sept. 15.
The restaurant will serve same fare found at Houston's Katz's Deli and Bar, located at 616 Westheimer, but with express service.

New owner names leader for St. Joseph Medical Center
Hospital Partners of America's purchase of downtown Houston's historic Christus St. Joseph Hospital has officially closed, and Phillip D. Robinson has been tapped to lead the transition to a physician-owned facility.
Charlotte, N.C.-based HPA announced in March its intent to buy Christus St. Joseph, which will now be known as St. Joseph Medical Center.

the new territory web site has a neighborhood page, but it isn't very intuitive. best they have is a list of emails

what size home? with the price range you gave, this could be quite a challenge
i would also agree with renting before buying, to get a better feel for the city (and whether or not sitting in the car for 39 minutes a trip is actually what they want).
-
That would be a safe room. They can be built any number of ways, but it sure is cheaper to build a 10x10 room out of concrete block than a 5000 sf house.
As for what a Bellaire resident would want in a house, I couldn't tell you. I'm very happy in a 1300 sf bungalow. I cannot imagine that cleaning a house 4 times the size of mine is worth it....especially considering I would also have to pay for it....that would mean I actually have to work.
i would say bellaire would do better in the long term with one-story or partial second floor non-lot-fillers.
of course, it seems that the clientele at this moment are young couples (+/- kids) with low self esteem and way too much credit

I have a few choices...I switched from Progressive after paying 1600+ dollar every 6 months(before i turned 21 and getting a license at 18) I switched to GMAC which lowerd me to almost 1100. Of course i jumped on it. Now i got a renewel for 1250...
oh my!
if i had quotes like that i wouldn't drive at all

I love how he puts, "Starter Home". Starter home for Bill Gates maybe ?
ha-ha
i think he meant a start for the gated community
but sheesh, for that price, i think i'd opt for more land than "nearly one acre"
well, whatever floats yer boat...err, i mean L

Metro light rail car, SUV collide during training run
By MIKE GLENN
Staff
A Metro light rail car and a sport utility vehicle collided downtown during the train's test run Wednesday. Police said it was the first accident involving the city's light rail train.
The accident occurred about 8:30 p.m. when the driver of the Jeep Cherokee turned in front of the train at Main and Gray, Metro police said.
KPRC-Channel 2 officials confirmed that Krista Marino, the station's health reporter, was driving the Jeep when it was struck by the train. Marino, who was not on duty at the time, was cited by police for making an illegal turn. Marino was not injured, and Metro officials said the train and the Jeep sustained only minor damage.
