Hello guys and gals.
Dont know if I mentioned before, but I too live in the "hood", in the Ventana. I LOVE all the construction in midtown/montrose/4th ward/ river oaks/ upper kirby/galleria. This area is becoming more and more dense by the day, definitely a step in the right direction. I like too imagine every day I drive through the area, what it would/could look like in the next 5/10/15/20 years and the way it looks like its going, these areas (central houston, including EaDo, Downtown, midtown, and the aforementioned areas) could almost entirely be high rises after many years of this same type of growth (barring neighborhoods like river oaks and the like where the single family homes will probably never be torn down for a high rise). Even still, that prospect is very possible and has me salivating at the mouth to dream of one day seeing my city so dense.
/happy rant
So anyway, has anyone tried Piola? I passed by the block today and saw the final store front of that block being worked on, very nice! That little area is quite the walkable neighborhood now.

I love it.
I just wish developers would go higher with these, at least 7-10 stories.

This is what happens when you make a crappy product and cut every corner possible.

Why is beige/tan the new theme in dt houston? This thing is almost as ugly as the pavillions.

New 13,000 square foot Scott Gertner bar coming to Pavilions in March! http://www.29-95.com/bars-clubs/story/scott-gertner-0
Perfect fit.

This building looks like the last flurf I took.

Wayne made a funny.

Whats up with the same ugly beige crap that they also used on the pavilions. Hideous.

Yes, renovations have been going on for a couple months already. The crane was there to put up 2 new ac chillers. The renovations started on the 30th floor and they are working their way down. Crews are also on the 8th and 9th floors, which house the gym, laundromat and basketball court. Debbie says they are going to fix the basketball court and turn it into a full court with two goals, and the workout area will be modeenized and have flat screen tvs. Also the huge apartment on 9 will be opened up and turned into a liesure area, wifi hotspot and bbq area. There are pics of the renderings in the lobby, i will post those later tonight.

I dont think the opinions of the ten people in this thread are going to matter/change too much of downtowns lighting.

It's not half as nice as the rendering, but it could be much worse.
That seems to be a running theme in Houston construction, save for Hines 47.

I read all these posts and then walked in with a bottle of wine last night, as did a few other guys in line, and we were all REJECTED.
Manager: "Sorry, you guys cant bring dat in here"
Me: "I thought it was byob?"
Other guy: "yea me too, i read that on Yelp"
Manager: "Yea, dat was two monds ahgo, before we had our ligghur license"
Fail. Still ate some pizza though, it was alright. I wasnt blown away.

What it might look like once retailers etc move in...

Phase II and III (did we know about a phase 3 before? I don't remember that!)
Can you imagine if this was downtown??

Construction crews have been working inside renovating the unused building. There is now a Coming Soon sign up on the farthest right slot for something called Natachee's Supper n Punch.
Freakin hipsters.
But I guess something is better than nothing.

Ok OK, i fudged a little by putting a tantalizing topic title without a description, BUT now that you are here, i was thinking with the slow down in construction maybe it would be fun to speculate, dream, predict WHEN, WHERE, and BY WHOM our fair city's next 50+ skyscraper will show. Perhaps somewhere in the Medical Center (thinking of that mini-boom over the last couple of years)?? Perhaps UT? Residential? Commercial? Mixed Use? Many of you are more in the know than i am when it comes to trends of construction probilities and so forth. Me, i just LOVE skyscrapers and urban development, so i follow in a sort of "coffee table book way"; i.e., drool over the pix., but don't necessarily read all the fine print, unless i am really in love with a certain scraper. SO, here is my limited take. IF a 50+ is to be built in DT, i think it would be because there was some sort of consolidation of an already existing corp. which has either grown to need the tower OR sold its smaller locations and moved into one. If that size is to be built in UT, i think it would be residential. Something full of glass and steel to contrast with all the beige, tan, brownish towers would be cool. My money would be a 50+ tower built in or near MT.(which i might say is looking spectacular; reminds me of Altanta's gorgeous UT) The only "IF" for that happening is that i am not certain if there are height restrictions due to its proximity to Hobby Airport. Anyway, give me your thoughts, with pix. if you would like.......again, not much going on, so i thought, hey, why not do some late 90's dreaming.

Very misleading thread title.
This thread is disappointing.

I thought that was the tract that Marvy owns and has condos planned for

it's halfway there...man, this is gonna be a short building.
Zero skyline impact?

Would you want lions and tigers roaming through your hospital?
Because they would build on top of the zoo and somehow the lions would be released into the hospitals instead of transferred to another zoo or sanctuary?

Or is there some kind of legality preventing that from ever happening?
TMC's expanding at a break neck pace and running out of room. Peering into the future, if it continues to expand as such, I wonder what the landscape will look like in another 20 years.

Just thought about this....
Because of its orientation, MainPlace should have a huge impact on the skyline view inside Minute Maid Park, especially with the sky garden facing the ballpark and being lighted at night.
Too bad no one will see it though since the Astros will probably stink this season...
Seems like all of our teams lately.

How did Downtown Houston end up with so many contiguous parking lots? How long has our city been around? I find it incredible that for so many decades these city blocks were not used for something either more esthetically pleasing or more profitable. Thank God we are slowly making our built environment more livable. With our track record it's nothing short of a miracle that Discovery Green and the surrounding areas have literally blossomed into something functional and beautiful.
With the plethora of surface lots in downtown, Ive often pondered the same thing myself.
My assumption has always been that, knowing Houstons history of demolishing historic structures, several of those lots probably used to be old circa 20's or 30's buildings. Im pretty sure there has to be some sort of map or grid of downtown that shows what old buildings used to be up on what lots, maybe even with pictures. If anyone knew where to find out it would probably be a poster/s on this site.
