  1. Looks like Bing has added birds-eyes down to the House of the Century, but only just. Not all views are visible. It was being weird for me but I was able to get a good look at it.

    Start here and move around.

VERY nice Marmer! Looks as if someone is keeping the grounds nicely. The lake appears to be an old series of sandpits. If it was the house of the century, I wonder why they didn't think about flooding, and simply elevate it? I'm sure the owners have enough money already, but it would be really cool if they cut a road, and small parking area around it, and charged admission to see it, and give the history, etc. I would pay to see it, and get the scoop on it.

    Always great posts!

  2. Without the bottom of the food chain, there's no top of the food chain. I'd hate to think we're causing damage that will affect all living things for the sake of coddling some perverted standard.

Without balance, there is nothing, PTTTHHH !!!. Perverted standards? Like preservation of humankind. Identify your group please: Earth Liberation Front, or Animal Liberation Front?

Have you signed up for the Human Extinction Project?

Admission: I buy energy from a supplier. I have no idea where they develop it from. My nephew is a power broker. They don't discuss where it comes from, they sell energy packages. Maybe marketing can ... ferret ... that out.

  3. I was on the way to surfside beach, and saw a huge area by the Port of Freeport, where they had large stores of parts for the wind turbines. I asked a truck driver at the Buccees close by, and he stated that some of them are going inland, however some, he was told, are for the Texas, Gulf Coast wind farms....

...which would supply power to an oil and gas platform offshore. ( BTW: I read the article !! )

    LTAWACS: UGHH!!

  4. Enough on the food already! Let's talk about favorite wines... ah yes...chilled, or not - white, or red ... a blush perhaps?

What are your favorites? O.K. Throw in cheese as well....

  5. I'm really surprised no one has started talking about this project, especially after the major oil spill that occurred near Louisana.

Just when Massachusetts thought they would be the first to build an off-shore wind farm in/near America, it looks like Texas will actually be the first, and the project starts this year!

This is exciting. We need a real Glen McCarthy to jump in here and wildcat the wind! Where's, "Silver Dollar" Jim West when Texas needs him???

  6. It is entirely possible to support the efforts of the police without encouraging them to violate the rights of our citizens by beating them unnecessarily. This is not a zero sum game. Just because the police helped your dear old pa does not entitle them to then "even things up" by violating the civil rights of someone else. Some of us rather enjoy the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and the protection from government oppression it affords us. It is what makes so many residents of India, Pakistan, China and Mexico want to emigrate here, as opposed to the other way around. I'd ask you to think about that before advocating civil rights abuses by our police.

A point well taken Red, and so appreciated. I am so proud to be an American, and more importantly, to be free of opression. Sometimes I forget the point of my father & mother, who sacrificed everything to bring us here as children. They knew the great test of this nation, and, you are absolutely right, my father would have called me down just as you have. I suppose we all are like spoiled children, who want it their way. Thank you for your courtesy to the United States law itself, by presenting such in it's idealism.

  7. I'm not making any accusations of racism at this point. I just have a tendency to believe that cops abuse their position and will manhandle citizens for any variety of reasons, and racism is just one of many, many reasons.

You wouldn't last 5 seconds doing the job that they do. Let's live in a community where the cops are known as limp wrist tartars. There's not a one of them - "Bad" or good that would hesitate one second to give their life for you in a burning car, or the middle of a ghetto. It's evident you wouldn't help them if they pleaded. I had two police officers from HPD muscle some punk gang bangers that had threatenned my family ( my father was 87 years old at the time ). I would have paid money to watch them kick the stinkin' teeth out of those animals.

  8. Hope this is a joke. The cops did not need to beat up the 15 year old kid and definitely not shoot him on the spot. From what I have read about this is that the video shows the suspect on his stomach getting beat up by eight officers and then they congratulated each other for what they did.

People know not to run from the police in India & Pakistan. They get a lot worse than kicked in the face. The Chineese have to come here, and use our laws, and freedoms against us. They dare not do that in other countries. In fact, try that in Mexico - you'll just disappear ... I see nothing!

  9. Very cool pics! Thanks for posting these, as they have given us some great ideas for our house. My wife loved the exposed beams, and the way they shaped them at the roofline with the glass. We're going to talk with our architect about creating the very same effect.

Very nice home, and again, thanks for the post!

  10. A lot of the Dow House windows are sliding glass door units. If your house's structure can handle it then go for it. When was your house built? A friend of mine lives in the Stallworth House by William Floyd:

    http://www.houstonmo...am%20N.%20Floyd

She is an architect and remodeled the house. They had a little bit of glass on the back of the house (I think they had one sliding glass door), but then took it to the next level with a lot more. I think they had to reinforce the structure somehow. It not only looks period correct, but better than it ever did. It looks like Floyd probably would have wanted it to if he had no restrictions on funds. I don't have interior pics, but she'd probably be willing to show you.

    Jason

We remodeled this house 8 years ago, but it was built in 1980. I showed a friend who is a structural engineer what we wanted to do with the big glass. He suggested a series of decorative reenforcement beams, and then we could make three of the four rear walls glass from floor to ceiling that would be sliding panels. This looks out over Clear Lake waterway, and the view will be wonderful from inside, as well as out. I'd love it if your friend would post the interior pics of the Stallworth House!

  11. Hello all!

This is a place where we can let everyone know when we add new content to the Houston Mod website, whether it's buildings, news or events.

You can now find original photos from the Alden B. Dow archives of the Charles Reed residence at 111 Carnarvon here:

    http://www.houstonmo...lden%20B.%20Dow

Also, photos from Edward Durell Stone's collection at the University of Arkansas are photos of the demolished Kempner residence:

    http://www.houstonmo...31&by=lost&ss=2

Be sure to check the "Lost Modern" and "Endangered Modern" sections frequently. For some reason, updates to those sections aren't registering in the regular databases.

These are some really cool photos of some very nice homes. I love the Dow home with the split-level concepts, ceiling affects, and plenty of glass - floor to ceiling. Our home is very open as this one, and though our windows are large, they are nowhere near the Dow home. Maybe our next project will entail bigger glass, and copy of the Dow glass walls. I showed these to my wife, and guess what? We're going to be taking bids, like tomorrow! That's what she said!

  12. When I first glanced at this image, I was thinking about food--specifically about foods that could possibly be better than what Attica had posted earlier. So I recognized the image as one of those awesome cheddarwurst links and began to salivate.

Damn Niche, just got back from KFC and enjoyed the Double Down. Now, we're headed back to the store for some cheddarwurst ( Slobber ) links! Light the Bar-B-Q, here I come!

P.S.: Don't worry, my wife is driving...

  13. Very possibly but at Traders Village they were limited to 75 spots and with over 4000 homes many couldn't participate. Plus Fairfield is the only community on the Northwest side that didn't have a community garage sale

Thanks for the info. My wife and her friends go to those events, so I've planted the seed for you. I'm very sure, as usual, they will come home with a lot of junk we don't need.
