  1. As a sidenote, my wife made a good observation this weekend. We were coming up Heights from Washington, and I remarked that they were extending the gravel trail from the Heights Blvd median along the new Walmart/Strip center area (between I-10 and Washington). She said, "well, that's stupid, because you have to cross from the trail, across Heights to the East or West sidewalks, and then cross back over Heights to get to the median again around Koehler/2nd street". She was right - there's a bridge across the bayou on Northbound Heights and a bridge on Southbound Heights, but nothing in between except open air and a 50 foot drop. No way to extend the running trail through there, and the Heights bridges don't have sidewalks on the inside lanes. See here: http://g.co/maps/gvrgx It was a very astute observation
  2. I guess repaved. When they were doing Shepherd I remember they stripped off the top 1-2 inches, grooved it, then laid down the asphalt. Yale (or the half of yale that's now gone) is all the way down to dirt - looks like 10-14 inches below the existing "road" (I use that term lightly, you'll understand if you've driven on it). Ironically, they're progressing with the strip center - some kind of SuperCuts or something put up their sign in the past few days. They're probably accessing the storefronts from the Heights Blvd side, since you sure can't get there from Yale.
  3. I know, repaving roads can be a significant undertaking. It's just frustrating because the works seems to have stalled out over the past 2 months or so. The East side of the street is ripped up, and they haven't done anything to it. It's just a big pit. I think I'm far enough away from Washington Ave to avoid the zombies. Some have been known to make their way all the way up to White Oak on Friday and Saturday nights though. That is worrisome. If they do demolish the bridge, can zombies swim across the bayou? Hmmm. I can't remember a zombie movie where their aversion to water was addressed.
  4. Can we get back to talking about how they've f'ed up Yale St so badly (between train tracks and I-10) and how it doesn't look like they'll be fixing it anytime soon? I mean really. The new strip center is done and ready to go, but you can't even get to it, let alone drive on that side of the road. Heights is inexplicably down to 1 lane going NB from Washington, Yale is down to 1 potholed and hazardous lane, and Shepherd is a parking lot because of the I-10 ramp construction. /vent. I don't even care about Walmart anymore. I just want to be able to get home at more than 3mph
  5. Please restate you question with a generalized comment about Walmart, Children, Paving Roads, Wild cats, Ruggles, and Airbinder, and someone will gladly respond :-)
  6. Yeah, not well advertised. Pretty sure they share a space with the kids store @ 8th and Studewood. EDIT: Yup. http://maps.google.com/maps/place?q=frosted+betty&hl=en&cid=9597490720536219746
  7. The DownHouse is now open for dinner, FYI. I've had 2 phenomenal experiences there for lunch so far.
  8. That conflicts with my experience. We pulled in to the lot, waited about a minute for a car to pull out, then parked our own vehicle. On the way out of the car the valet gave us a ticket and asked for our key. After our meal, we returned to find the valet had graciously (/sarcasm) turned our car 180 degrees. I then gave him my ticket, got my key back, begrudgingly gave him $1, and pulled my own vehicle back out. That's not valet, that's a paid parking lot. EDIT: It was in the parking lot in back (South side of the restaurant)
  9. Went to the 11th St Cafe/Ruggles this weekend for brunch. Food was pretty good, service was mediocre. Slow, kind of disorganized. Our food took a long time to appear. Saw 2 other tables there with friends. Table 1: Didn't get 2 items ordered (bacon and coffee), toast wasn't toasted. Table 2: Left after sitting there for 10-15 minutes and not getting their order taken. Payment system wasn't great either - they bring the check to you, but then you have to get up and pay at the register. Friends at table 1 said that part took them 10 minutes as well. Our table paid a lot faster. Valet parking only. I'll probably give them another shot, but wait a few months for them to work out the kinks. And i'll park nearby and walk a few blocks... I despise 'valet only' with all of my soul - we only did it yesterday b/c it was hot, we had a baby with us, and once we pulled into the lot and realized it was valet, it was too late to quickly/safely pull back out onto Studewood.
  10. They recently moved all of their geoscientists from Northern California to Houston. Much to the dismay of all of their geoscientists. I think their engineers stayed in CA, though maybe that will be changing.
  11. The real estate study has been going on (publically) for at least the past 18 months or so, though the current location has only been known (speculated, whathaveyou) for maybe 6 months? 9? Somewhere in that range, from what I've heard/read/seen. Maybe even longer... folks 'in the know' signed some pretty significant Nondisclosure Agreements. It's been known long enough to get plans drawn up, land purchased, trees cleared, a test building built (yep, a test building - visible on Google Maps, just south of ExxonMobil's property), cranes leased, etc etc. I mean, it's ExxonMobil... it's a slow moving boat, at best. They take their time on things. I'd wager the higher-ups have known for quite a while.
  12. Conspiracy theory already? Jeez. Unless I'm missing the sarcasm... How about this: ExxonMobil was looking for a large tract of land with good access for a 2014-2016 timeframe. Grand Parkway has a planned completion of 2015 I believe. So that satisfied one of XOM's requirements for a good site. The fact that ExxonMobil has been looking at this area for quite a while is no secret at all. It was only *formally* announced a few days ago, but they've been working on the area for some time. Springwoods Village saw where the wind was blowing, and jumped on the opportunity. If you're looking to build a community, and suddenly see a nearly 400 acre plot of land with good access be purchased, I think that'd be a pretty good clue that something big was happening.
  13. This is Houston. Having something within walking distance isn't necessarily my primary objective. For me, I'd rather have these options close to where I live, not work.
  14. Red, this might be the first time I agree with you 100%.
  15. Went there this weekend. It was phenomenal. Incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff, very relaxed atmosphere, and the food was spectacular. I'll be back there... soon. Nice selection of beers, too (quality over quantity). They went with the "private club" thing... had to pass a very difficult admission test involving writing my name and address down on a piece of paper.
  16. Direct quote: "ExxonMobil corporate headquarters in Irving, XTO, and Clinton and Paulsboro Research facilities in New Jersey are not within the scope of the facility study and will not be relocated to the new campus."
  17. The information available directly to employees states it implicitly.
  18. I think a more accurate statement would be that folks who live on the Southern side of the city might not be as excited. I know plenty of folks who live up North, work down South, and are overjoyed at the thought of cutting 1+ hours off their commute.
  19. The fate of VA will be announced in 2012. Headquarters are officially out of the scope of the study, and is not being considered for a move to Spring. We actually know quite a bit more than we did yesterday. Size, scope, timing, who, design, look, amenities, etc.
  20. >>So if the headquarters are not moving, what exactly is the new campus for? Consolidation of Houston upstream facilities. There are currently lots of buildings, very spread out across town
