  1. Is Pickles that tin shack in the woods on Kluge? I always wondered about that place. Have to stop in there sometime.

Marty, if you go to Alicia's go for lunch or go before 6pm, it gets really crowded as they've outgrown their space. I highly recommend the Fajitas (especially the beef fajitas). Parrilla Mixta (Beef, Chicken and 2 butterfly shrimp fajita dinner) is very popular. Quality mexican food, good prices. Cnote's right about the atmosphere, hopefully they'll put in a playground for the kids when they build their new pad site location.

  2. Great place for Hunan in Cypress is Hunan River Bistro. It's located just outside of Longwood near Louetta & Grant. I lived in Midtown for 5 or 6 years and we had some superb Chinese food, but I'd put Hunan River Bistro right up there with Huang's. Great stuff. Quality.

PO's Hamburgers a legendary grease burger dive. They've got just about any burger you could want: buffalo, ostrich, turkey, etc. I like the Buffalo burger.

Wood Fired Pizza in Cypress. They've got no advertising. No delivery. Up until recently, no sign. How do they stay in business? Great pizza. Family owned/staffed. Quality ingredients. Nice oven.

  3. I always like to see local establishments take root and become successful. What are some of the more popular local establishments in your area?

One place I never thought would become successful is this little place over on Jones Rd. called Connie's Frozen Custard. First time I saw it, I said to myself "that place won't last till the end of the year"....several years later, they're packing them in with lines out the door. Great stuff, btw!

There's a place over on Cypress-Rosehill that has recently become my favorite place for fajitas (surpassing even Lupe Tortillas). It's called Alicia's. They pack them in every night.

  4. Plans for Gleannloch parcel

A Houston-based real estate firm has purchased about 250 acres in Gleannloch Farms, the last remaining commercial property in the master-planned development.

Through an investment partnership, the Betz Cos. acquired the northwest Harris County property near Champion Forest Drive and Boudreaux for an undisclosed amount.

CEO Ray Betz said he expects the land will be developed into a combination of uses, including shops, apartments, townhomes and office and medical space.

The site will have frontage along the proposed Grand Parkway, which should be completed in this area within four years, said Ron Dagley, president of Raymond R. Betz Interests.

Homes in Gleannloch Farms range from around the $140,000s to upwards of $1 million. The more-than-2,000-acre development was once the site of an Arabian horse farm, and the community has retained an equestrian theme.

  5. I still think it's such a shame that they can't put a pediatrics section at Methodist Willowbrook. We took my little girl to their ER over Christmas -- BAD idea. If you have kids, make the drive to TxCH. They couldn't even get her IV started before they transported her to TxCH (IVs are required during transport). Had to have the EMT start it, and after three tries and numerous pats on the back from the Meth. WB nurses and the EMT at having "got it", the ER nurse at TxCH was appalled to find that it wasn't even close. I can't tell you how much worse our ordeal was because of their inability to do something as routine as start an IV on a kid. And don't get me started on their inability to read x-rays. Diagnosing pneumonia isn't THAT hard...

It's just a shame that they built a top-notch hospital out here that can't do a damned thing for our little ones.

Kind of ridiculous when you consider how many families there are with children out here.

  6. I was at the Berry Center meeting. It was probably the least contentious public hearing I've ever been to. Just about everyone out on that end of the corridor wants the project, quite a few wanted rail sooner (as do I). There were very few spoken public comments (about 5-6). There were a few of the green types there to nitpick on the DEIS.

I know its early in the game but did they address aesthetics? I'd like to see more landscape and architectural features than the basic utilitarian 290 that we have now. I've noticed a lot of the rebuilt freeways in Texas have incorporated this into the design (ie. North Central Expressway in Dallas, I-10 Project in Houston, Marsha Sharp Freeway in Lubbock, 183 in Austin, etc). Did this issue come up?

  7. From their website:

    http://www.theeggandirestaurants.com/index.html

The Egg and I Restaurant, an upscale breakfast and lunch concept, was created by Rayno and Patty Seaser. They opened the first Egg and I Restaurant on College Ave. in Ft. Collins, Colorado in 1987. On October 6, 2005, E & I Holdings, Inc. which is principally owned by Bill Baumhauer and Don Lamb, purchased the franchise system from the Seaser's. In addition, Bill and Don purchased three individual Egg and I Restaurants in Colorado, so they have 'a piece of the egg' themselves

Since 1987, the Egg & I has grown to 19 restaurants, both company owned and franchised, in Colorado and Wyoming.

The Company is expanding the concept nationally, primarily through franchising the concept to qualified individuals. It is anticipated that over the next five years an additional 40 to 50 restaurants will be opened throughout the US.

    Menu

Looks like it'll be a lot like Le Peep, which is ok by me. I love Le Peep.

  8. Rather amazed at the growth along the Beltway from 45 to 59 over the past 5 to 7 years. Space is running out. This looks like its going up at 249 & The Beltway.

    BWLakesHomePagePhoto.gif

For you futurists...if you can nab some away from the politicos who bought long ago...get your hands on some of that Grand Pkwy Real Estate...it'll be like the Beltway in 15 years.

  9. Yes, these days they do.

The days are gone when all that was needed was two unarmed 'deputy dogs' whose job it was to make sure nobody's car got broken into and make sure the traffic cones were in the right place to ensure proper egress from the school parking lots.

The context in which this particular quote was used was just so depressing.

I think ultimately the campus will benefit from smaller class sizes and more individual attention that can be made possible by a rezone.

  10. I'm not trying to spark up any racial issues, But I believe people steriotype Klein Forest because of it's lower percentage in Caucasions than the other 3 High Schools in Klein ISD. Students at KFHS are just as smart and intelligent.

Actually, KF is rougher than Westfield from what I've heard.

    Quote from GreatSchools.net:

"I am a student at Klein Forest High School. I will become a senior next year. This school may have it bad times but, they all ways have the situation under control. There is always police to control the problems."

  11. How could the district rezone Greenwood Forest Subdivision to Klein HS and Klein Forest HS sits in Greenwood Forest. Wouldn't that be like zoning the Northampton Subdivision to Klein Collins HS and Klein Oak HS is right across the street.

It's been done before and by practical standards, should be done here as there won't be another HS built in the Southern part of the district, all that can be done to reach optimum enrollment levels is to shift boundaries westward - which is what they're proposing to do. Common sense solution.

Also What reputation does Klein Forest HS have?

The kind of reputation where they had to come up with a kooky concept like "A School Within a School" just to protect the kids that actually wanted to learn.

  12. A new locally-owned Steakhouse is being built on Telge, the Bertani Ranch Steakhouse, across from the Northwest Forest Conference Center. I'm all for locally-owned establishments. Can't wait till it opens. Hope its good.

  13. They'd be awesome if they'd just lower their prices a bit to compete more. The Randall's in front of Coles Crossing in Cypress has undergone the Lifestyle remodel and as nice as it is, I'm afraid its going to get blown away by the new HEB going up across the street from it. I like the Panini Bar, the wood-fired oven baked goods and the produce area is much-improved. Wine selection is huge.

  14. I drove by this location yesterday and the sign had been painted over in khaki paint.

To think anyone would put something like what was being 'proposed' there is absolutely nutz. First of all, that's a nice piece of land he's got there which is rising in value. You can't see it right off Fry Rd, but you have to take a right on Mound Rd. headed towards the new Blackhorse section. There's a nice looking new shopping center and an Episcopal Church (St. Aidan's) being built right on that corner.

That whole area is abuzz with activity. Workers running around like ants, everywhere. Houses going up, earth being moved. Lines being layed, schools being built, a marketer's dream if you're trying to reach 'New Movers'.

I'm amazed at how great Bridgelands looks already. Admittedly, I'm more of a fan of the wooded-type neighborhoods found on the north side of 290, but I must say Bridgelands is going to be very nice. You can tell a great deal of care has gone into creating this community. I've noticed they've aggressively planted thousands of trees throughout the community, some decent-sized one's too. There's a rather picturesque line of hardwoods on the other side of the lake on the right that lines Cypress Creek. It seemed like just about every other car in Bridgeland had an out-of-state license plate, so it appears it'll be popular with newcomers and transplants.

The new Cypress Ranch HS looks humongous, and sits right at the entrance of the neighborhood. This school features a large nautitorium and looks to be right on schedule with construction. The athletics fields are really impressive and already complete. They've planted nice Cypress trees on the medians of the access roads to the entire school complex.

This whole corridor is nice. With the avg. home price in the low to mid $300's it is really exploding. If you were there 6 months ago you'd be amazed at how much it has grown since.

Each of the neighborhoods has its own slightly different niche. Blackhorse offers the awesome Golf Course as well as some very nice million dollar homes in the gated sections. Cypress Creek Ranch offers larger half acre to 1 acre lots. Bridgeland offers numerous lakes and hike & bike trails, disc golf, paddle boats, etc. The park that lines Cypress Creek is really beautiful. It looks like a nice outdoorsy type community. They've also managed to give the terrain a rolling feel. The streets are cozy and it features numerous roundabouts and gathering areas. Cypress Creek Lakes looks quite similar to Cinco Ranch around the lakes, differing slightly from Bridgelands in having slightly larger lots.

Thousands of really nice homes as far as the eye can see and they're just getting started.

Looking across the way from Cypress Creek Lakes and Ranch you can see the Northern portion of what will be Towne Lake. Unlike the Southern portion of that development, this part is thickly wooded, not with pine, but with hardwoods and lots of beautiful hundred year old-looking oak trees. If they're smart, they'll do everything they can to preserve as much as they can in this part of the development, it'll help them differentiate their community from the others around it.

  15. I love Greenwood Forest. I used to live on Lodge Creek from the early 1970's until the early 1980's. Greenwood Grizzlies, Greenwood Green Machine, YMCA Soccer, Spring-Klein Little League Football...Super Bowls between the areas reigning juggernauts, the Ponderosa Cowboys and the Klein Jets. Spent my youth there. Still have lifelong friends. A lot of original owners are still there. It is still a nice neighborhood, its a shame what happened to the HS...same deal happened to Ponderosa...both wonderful neighborhoods to this day. I'd like to see it re-zoned, it'll help out Klein Forest by relieving the crowded classrooms, lowering the student/teacher ratios and giving the kids more individual attention, while making the residents of Greenwood Forest happy as well.

  16. That center IMO is primo real estate in that area and should benefit from the new construction and higher traffic that Vintage Park will bring. While I haven't seen that they're doing any major renovations (they should reposition this entire center as Caldwell is doing with the Spring Cypress Center). I have seen the buildout of the new breakfast place "The Egg and I" which I am looking forward to trying it as soon as it opens. We've been lacking a good "Le Peep" style breakfast place out here. Along with the HP crowd, It should also benefit from the presence of a couple of hotels next door.
