  1. You are quite welcomed. I found this last year and like you couldn't believe how clear everything was. The only problem is they don't have the birdseye view available for all of Houston...yet. I wanted to see my old house on Avenue L in the east end but to no avail. Did you see that there 4 views available? N S E W. I've actually stayed on it for 5 hours one saturday. I have no life. lol. see ya
  2. Go to windows live local. Search for addicks. Change to hybrid view and find these markings. Now switch to birdseye view and you can see that the one with the circle and the bump in the middle is a circle with a tree in the middle.. the square is water. the other one... trees make up the cross but I still can't figure out the trough around the whole thing. Windows live local is great.
  3. Do you remember a big 2 or 3 story white house with black trim on Southpark? I remember going with my great grandmother in the early 60's to visit a woman that lived there named Mrs. Tart. We would drive north on OST and turn left onto Southpark and the house wasnt too far down on the left hand side. It also was surrounded by a white split rail fence. There was a boarded over well in her backyard with the story of a little boy that drowned when he fell in the well. Another story had it being an orphanage at one time.
  4. It had a half circle driveway in front and a big concrete fence in front so you could only catch a little glimpse of the property through the 2 gates that were iron. It was very big and very spooky. In the early 70's, my church had a haunted house party there. All I remember was palm trees around the house and a spiral staircase in very poor condition in the front room and a riding stable and what looked like a smaller house in back. My brother said some biker group lived in it for a while before the police found out they were there and chased them out. I can't find pictures of the place anywhere or even anything written about it. It was torn down right after that holloween party . There was also a big church to the south of it but its a school now. Does anyone know anything about the house or the family? Thanks in advance, Susan
  5. Can anyone please tell me the name of the man that took all those wonderful old photos of Houston. I found a web site for him in here a while back and forgot to save it to my favorites. Thanks in advance.
  6. Ah yes, I was SO cool. lol Then I went on to be a geaky 10th grader at Austin. See ya.
  7. I went to Jackson Jr. High from 68 to 71. I had some friends that lived in the neighborhood you are talking about. If you stood on Altic with your back facing Jackson, I guess you would be facing north, she lived in the third or fourth house on the right. A big brick 2 story with wonderful hardwood floors and a huge fireplace. Back then it was painted white with green shutters. I drove by a few years ago and it was gray. Another friend lived behind her a couple of blocks over towards the east. This was a one story red brick with 3 bedrooms, hardwood floors, a fireplace and a nice front porch. The homes over there were always so cozy even thought they were by the scary cemetary. Back then the cemetary was a tangle of brush and thick vines along with broken headstones and opened graves. But it wasn't scary enough to keep us from hanging out there to smoke before the school bell rang.
  8. The Red Bluff Drive In took up quite a bit of land for an old single screen movie. It took up the land from the 225 feeder down red bluff blvd to where you can still see the old driveway. Yes, it was on all the land between 225 and the neighborhood and red bluff blvd. Where the truck stop is now used to be the concession stand. The screen was over the concession stand. The back of the screen faced 225.
  9. Apparently driveins .com is wrong. The Red Bluff Drive In was located on the south side of 225 and the west side of Red bluff blvd. The storage tanks have been at the same location for longer than I can remember. They are located on the south side of 225 and the east side of Red Bluff Blvd across the street from the drive in. I had a delivery to make this morning and the truck stop still sits where the red bluff drive in used to be. I lived in Deer park for quite a while and watched the drive in being torn down. Go to googlemaps.com and go to 225 and red bluff and hit the hybrid button. An aerial photo will come up and you can see the truck stop on the 225 feeder almost to red bluff blvd. if you scroll down red bluff to the south you can see where the town and country drive in was. If you get to Spencer youve gone too far.
  10. The drive in in Pasadena I went to was The Town and Country located on Red Bluff between Spencer Hwy and Pasadena Blvd. It was a family drive in. The Red Bluff drive in was adults only XXX and was located at Red Bluff and 225. It is now a truck stop. Subdude, go to googlemaps.com When the map comes up just click on the hybrid button and it will show you aerial photos. You wont have to download anything. have fun, Susan
  11. Im 48 and I remember going to a few drive ins in the 60's and 70's. The last movie I saw at Telephone Road was Young Frankenstein. I drove by the land it used to occupy a few weeks ago and you can still make out the driveway in and out and from arial photos you can see the humps you used to park on. Hurricane Alicia took care of the Gulfway. After it hit, the marquee said the movie playing was Gone With The Wind thanks to a person with a sense of humor and a spray paint can. I saw Purple Rain at the giant drive in on 45 north, and Saturday night fever at the Texas City drive in. And let us not forget the Town and Country in Pasadena. The last movie I saw there was Star Wars. I wont mention Pasadenas other famous drive in, although if you were on 225 heading east and looked out the back windshield at the right time you could get a glimpse of things a youngster shouldnt see. Does anyone think Drive ins would work now? Personally, I don't, althought I do miss them greatly.
  12. Was there a Richardson chevrolet Southwest freeway at Hillcroft? I seem to remember a jingle like that. I also remember Bob Robertson Chevrolet on the Gulf Freeway but I dont remember if it was Wayside exit or Telephone rd exit.
  13. I don't remember it being a Kips but its could have been. I went there in the 60's and 70's. The only Kips I remember was on Griggs diagonal from Palm Center and next door to the Shakeys Pizza. Kips had the best sauce on their burgers. Yum.
  14. Is the Dot Coffee shop still there? I remember it being in front of Gulfgate mall right off 45. It was a nice place to go for breakfast before we went shopping. The people there were so friendly and they didnt serve your bill with your breakfast like so many places do now. What a nice way to say "hurry up, eat and get out of here."
  15. I remember the Globe across from Gulfgate. It was the only one we ever went to. I think there was a Michelin tire store close to it with the big white michelin man standing either on the roof or in front of the store. On Woodridge on the other side of 45 was the christmas tree lot where we always bought our christmas tree.
  16. Boy, I remember that motel. When I was a kid I too wanted to climb up there and hitch a ride on one of the horses. That was the coolest sign. Wasn't it located kinda close to Peppermint Park?
  17. It somehow looks different with the communications tower in the background. Thanks for posting them.
  18. Thanks John, Thats the place. Wasn't it on a corner and the entrance was on the side street? That was so many years ago. It was the first mexican restaurant I was ever taken to as a child.
  19. Thanks sevfiv. My brother and I have been looking for a photo of the old theater for years now. We could actually walk to the Navaway in 2 minutes . Another thing I remember about the Navaway is the fact they didn't sell hotdogs. The lobby was very tiny as was the candy counter. I guess there was no room for hotdogs. It was a treat to go to the Santa Rosa or the Broadway for the hotdog fix. Did you ever make it by the old Blue Top Motel? I'm curious to see if the old neon sign out front still works. Thanks again.
  20. We seldom ate out either. My brother and I lived in the house with 2 great cooks. My great gandma Ida and my Grandma Mattie Lou. Best chicken ever in that old cast iron skillet. And Cream gravy form the drippings. Oh man, I so want that chicken.
  21. Not many cattle until you were farther out South Main. Then of course there was Sugar Land, Richmond and Rosenberg where the cattle outnumbered the people.
  22. That exactly how I feel. Even Navagation used to be alive with grocery stores, a movie theater and all sorts of little shops and big factories like John Deere and Bama Jelly. It was a busy place on a Saturday morning. And when the wind blew just right there was always the smell of roasting coffee beans from the coffee plant on Navagation.
  23. I used to love a drink called Fairmonts Apple Beer and also a drink from the 60's that didn't last very long called Pomac. The fairmonts jingle was. Heres to apple beer the drink of the year, no soda pop has a foamy top like Fairmonts Apple Beer.
