  1. Right, it's South Rice. It was confusing becase they left off the "South".
  2. It seems like uptown since I don't know where Rice Blvd and Richmond meet.
  3. Can you get cooked seafood at the Seafood Market? It's great for fresh cuts of fish and crab to take home. Plus the staff is wonderful and will help you make your purchase based on whatever you are trying to accomplish with your meal. I agree with the chain thing too. They grew to chains because they were either really cheap (McDonalds) or consistently good Let me add Los Cucos in Panther Creek as a quality chain. Chuy's is still my favorite place of all time. Roasted Chicken Sopapillas or Burritos with green chile sauce was a staple for me in College. And I can't let a work week go by without getting lasagna from Spaghetti Warehouse.
  4. Yes, but do you notice how poor the produce and the meat is? There are not enough people to for each store to keep a good turn over rate. Everything is out of date or about to be, We have had 4 spoiled meat problems in 3 months. Now we go to the Randalls in PC. MUCH better store. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> We don't really buy meat, so I haven't noticed. Did this only start occuring after the HEB went in? We buy a lot of grapes and strawberries from Kroger. They have all been fine. If we buy meat, it's from the organic section mostly, so that is a whole other animal. We never shop at Randalls because it's so much more expensive. I actually wish we had a Whole Foods out here instead of a Kroger & HEB though.
  5. I just called my dad. Charlie's hamburgers was on Ella and 16th street. Oh, now I remember! I've been to Charlie's at Westheimer & Waugh. I had forgotten the name. We used to go there after 2am on weekends for the "sights". My favorite memory was being greeted at the door by the hairiest man I've ever seen, wearing a pink lowcut evening gown, pearls, and heels. (not that there's anything wrong with that).
  6. I agree. It's not just riff-raff that goes to Wal-Mart. Like it or not, almost everyone near a wal-mart shops there. There are the few that may boycott, but there is a reason that Wal-Mart is the largest company in the world. They provide a service that most people want. If you don't or haven't shopped at Wal-Mart, you probably are in the extreme minority. I'm not saying Wal-Mart is great for the neighborhood or society in general, but it's working. I was much more upset to see the HEB go in directly across the street from the Kroger down the road. I thought for sure we couldn't support both. But I guess I'm wrong. They are always both semi-crowded.
  7. Wow, I just had a flashback. I remember going to a Charlie's as a kid with my dad in the late 70's. I remember the sign said "Over a dozen served" or something funny like that. I loved that place back then. Is it the same one?
  8. Perry's has a great Pork Chop. Most of the good ones are on the feeder of I-45 and near Oak Ridge or Rayford/Sawdust. There is a good mexican place the other side of 45 on Rayford. It's in the shopping center with the Fish Market. I've only had one dish there. The Thursday special, which is Caldo de Pollo (Chicken Soup). It's awesome. I can't speak for any other dish. I think it's called Mario's. Also, there is ShadeTree BBQ. Turn left at the next light going East on Rayford. It looks like the Boonies, but a little shack is on the right. Good BBQ sandwiches. Also, good BBQ is Pit Master on Sawdust. Pulled Pork is to die for. Black Walnut is good on Research. Most of the Chinese that I have had is mediocre, but TaiPei (I-45 feeder) is good. Sitar Indian is good on the feeder of I-45. Thai Ocha on sawdust is good. I've had a number of good dishes there. Also, 1488 has some great hole in the wall/ground bbq pits. jpc
  9. You are right, there is a facility for the blind on Dallas near Dunlavy. The stop lights had an audible alarm when I lived near there.
  10. Six? Wow, I had no idea. There is the one on Sawdust and the Super Walmart on 242, but that's all I had seen. You just have to hope that the WOC realizes that a big chunk of their income is based on our home values, so won't do anything to shoot their own foot.
  11. They have it on the Katy. Our receptionist uses it every day. I think you need at least 2 in the car though instead of the normal 3 that are required. I'm not sure if 1 person can pay more to ride.
  12. I can honestly say, that I've liked every single neighborhood I've lived in here. And there have been many (7 or 8). I really just love this town.
  13. Makes me kind of nostalgic. My dad worked for HISD for 30+ years and was in that building for a good portion of it as deputy superintindent. I remember as a really little kid thinking the "Taj Mahal" was a pretty cool place.
  14. I would agree that for some, moving to The Woodlands while working in the city is kind of silly. But in my case, my family consists of 4 individuals (5 if you count my dog). So, the fact that I now "face being in the city" is a small part of a much bigger picture. I am content with the fact that my wife and kids are happy out there and that I love working down in the city. However, if I were single or even married without kids, I'd live in the city most likely.
  15. Those are amazing. When the Trinity River would flood, we would wade out into the flats and go bow fishing. I've seen some that are well over 100lb and would give you nightmares. (queue the theme from Jaws)
  16. What neighborhood do you live in? There are so many high end neighborhoods out that way (Carlton Woods, Cascade Canyon, Player/Palmer Woods, etc) that I don't think they will take a big dive. If 2978 is truly the next 1960, then look at neighborhoods around Champions. They are very close to the mess that is 1960, but aren't exactly cheap.
  17. In chron.com today they listed the top 12 cities with traffic delays. Houston was #5, but DC was #3. I wonder how bad DC would be without that extensive METRO? When I rode it, it was jammed pack at 5pm, so I know it's well used. That also makes me wonder that if DC and Houston are so similar, how much would a METRO help? But looking out my window onto the West Loop @ San Felipe, it's been free and clear since about 5:30pm. I really can't complain.
  18. Based on prior posts I've read from that person, it was probably meant like: "The neighbors are probably republicans, so screw them, they deserve it." In all serious, noone deserves bad neighbors, so I hope this gets resolved.
  19. I'm surprised too. That is a very nice neighborhood. I sometimes ride my bike through there and gawk at the big houses. A number of local "celebrities" live there. Maybe they have enough pull to get something done soon. I'm shocked how someone would think things like that are reasonable as a good neighbor.
  20. I heard something about a Lowe's or Home Depot going in there.
  21. This is more of a casual observation as I have no facts to quantify, but a lot of the land I saw clear cut in East Texas was privately held. Individuals get in a bind and sell the timber on their land. I am not sure, but I doubt that reforestation programs are as enforced or encouraged on private clear cut land as they would be on national forest areas. We've seen some beautiful land that housed deer and other wildlife just get turned to nothing but cow pasture. This is a worse loss. It will be interesting to watch how these programs play out.
  22. One interesting thing about East Texas... The trees there that recently have been clear cut for the most part were the result of a reforestation process from way back. There is very little original growth in the area at all. I would love to go back a 100-150 years and see the giant 6' in diameter pine trees that I have read about. We had land near Crockett along the Davy Crockett National Forest since the Civil War and I have seen the majority of forested land clear cut. I really did hate to see it happen. I hope the reforestation programs are well thought out and we can see the growth like it was just a few years ago. That specific resource is renewable if the programs are well organized.
  23. I love how the city has rallied around him. I hope the fans show up with signs and chants that show our support for the coach and the team. David Stern needs to hear from us (the customer base) on how we feel about that level of punishment. That being said, I hope it doesn't overshadow the fact that the Rockets really really really need to win tonight.
  24. Looking out my window, I'm at eye level with the one at San Felipe and the 610 feeder. I have no issue with them, especially after reading all the benefits listed here.
