  1. Lets see how those towers in Austin when you'll be able to see right through them in the since most will be vacant and at night you wont even know some of them are there because there will be nobody in them for a while. Real estate in Austin is stagnant right now. Home prices are down considerably. I spoke with a good friend who has worked in commercial real estate there since 1995 and he said it is extremely slow and doesnt have a clue what's going to happen with all of the empty space. So it's really not any different there than here. WE will always be the leader in this state for the arts. When we lived in Austin in the 90's if it hadn't been for the Ransom center and the art museum on campus Austin would not have had a true art museum. They didnt have  an opera, a ballet, or an orchestra. Live theater was the comedy club down on 6th street a friend of mine from Houston started. So they're Johnny come lately's in my books.

It is an impressive skyline I'll grant you that, but they have no choice but to bundle it all downtown in a tight little central center because there is no place else to build.

Put downtown , the uptown galleria, the med center, greenway plaza and the energy corridor in that same area and think how impressive our downtown would look.

I'll take Houston over Dallas and Austin anyway.

  2. I might have missed it, but have they given a date for the Ismali center's opening. I imagine the interior work is going to take awhile considering the craftsmanship and attention to detail in some of the other centers. Also, is that going to be a glass curtain wall of some sort facing West Dallas, that's being constructed now. Truly remarkable, and to think we are the first in America. This will become a huge tourist draw from all over the states and abroad.

MONARCH, this is one thing that austin and dallas won't have.

    Ever!

  3. In the past I have reported on the ongoing rehabilitation and remodel of the Riverside Terrace jewel, known as the Weingarten Mansion. This magnificent estate sits on a roughly 5 acre tract of land that fronts Bray's Bayou, just east of Scott street. Nearly 8 years ago the house was bought by the Schroeders with plans to renovate restore and bring the estate back better than it was. After many starts and stops it appears to have bogged down over the last five years and come to a complete halt. This,  after the home received a new roof, new windows and doors, the brickwork was completed and it looked like they were going great guns. Then recently I noticed that the brickwork had been completely removed. I was told it was due to the fact that there was no water barrier between the brick and the studs. They have covered the house with Tyvek, and now appears they are adding some kind of decorative marble to the facade. I'm not sure where this is going, but I do hope they get they're act together and finish what looked originally like a wonderful rehabilitation of one of Riverside Terraces most beautiful structures.

On another note the pair of American Bald Eagles have been spending a lot of time sitting in the top of a tall pine tree just to the west of the large white house on the corner of Rio Vista and South MacGregor. They spend quite a bit of time there, not far from their nest which is in the east end of Parkwood Park which is one of the most beautiful and hilliest parks in all of Houston. If you ride your bike along S. MacGregor keep a lookout for them. They are truly magnificent and a really special treat for visitors and citizens of Riverside Terrace. You don't often have an opportunity to see Bald Eagles in an urban setting.

A pedestrian bridge across the bayou might be good (or it might be better to add better pedestrian accommodations on the existing Fannin, Braeswood and Berliner bridges), to get from Helix Park to the main campus of TMC. But if the goal is to get to the TMC TC, it would be better to just make sure we have good sidewalk infrastructure along S Braeswood and Fannin, the shortest, most direct rout to the TMC TC. (Sidewalks currently exist, but they could use improvement, especially on the Fannin St bridge.)

FWIW, that conceptual rendering does not show a pedestrian bridge to the UT School of Public Health. It appears to suggest a pedestrian bridge over the bayou and then between two large sets of cooling towers (is that even feasible? I would guess not - it looks like there's only maybe 15 feet between them), and then perhaps connecting to MD Anderson's skywalk, which does not connect to the UT School of Public Health and would be a round-about way to get to the TMC TC.

The rendering does show a bridge which would cross OST which is a very busy street. It's in the bottom of the rendering. It would also tie the dental school, MD Anderson cancer treatment centers along with the UT Health Science center to the Helix. You can see the bridge in the bottom of the screen crossing OST.

  6. With all of the growth and density in the neighborhood, it makes sense to start adding more restaurants. The only problem I see with that site is egress. I pass by their twice a day and its always a pain with the rail and the cars trying to enter the valet drop off at the medical arts building. They often block Binz awaiting pick up. Hopefully this is on the Caroline side of the building and not on the Binz side.

So 6 storied boutique hotel built in funky mythological not the least historic  location and let me guess..........all sheathed in chrome and glass......

Nouveaux  architecture seems so ubiquitous nowadays.............couldn't anyone at the developers  firm broke out of their box and used this opportunity to make something fabulously Montrosian? 🧐🤨😒😕

My guess would be that the boutique hotel will be sheathed in cheap stucco. It seems to be the material of choice for these franchise hotels and apartment buildings.

My second guess is there will be a crew out on scaffolding in less than three years repairing said stucco.

I think the best place for new murals in Houston is the giant blank concrete walls of the MFA/H.

They own the rights to so many great paintings inside.  Why not showcase them on the outside, and liven up the area?

Thats what the banners are for. I don't want to see murals painted on any of the fine arts buildings. Paint on the Mies building. No way. Or the Moneo no. There are plenty of sculptures around the campus . They are about to add an impressive work by last years Venice Bienalle U.S Representative Simon Leigh to the Kinder building near the entrance to the sculpture garden. That is going to be quite and  accession, that will add to the already wonderful outdoor public sculpture garden which anyone can walk through for free. Lets save murals for ugly cinderblock walls and leave the world class architecture alone. I dont think Mies, Moneo or Holls would think very highly of someone slapping a bunch of paint on the sides of their buildings.
