Houston has been getting a lot of good press lately as a top city in the U.S. and a top travel destination.  No need to oversell the World Cup 2026.  We just hosted the Super Bowl in 2017.  Anybody buying tickets to Quatar after the World Cup?  Does anyone remember the cities that hosted in Russia 2018 or Brazil 2014?  The one-time economic benefit is more important in my opinion.

    “No need to oversell”

Cmon man. It’s the friggin World Cup.

Final Fours are nice. WrestleMania is too.

Super Bowl LI (2017) alone brought in $347 million to our local economy for ONE FOOTBALL GAME

The World Cup is the biggest sporting event worldwide and Houston will be hosting MULTIPLE matches, likely at least a Group Stage with potentially hosting additional knockout round matches for a global tournament that will be expanded (48 teams) in 2026. The revenue it might pump in to the local economy will eclipse any event this city has ever hosted in its entire history. It’s a global spotlight we’re fortunate to have. The city needs to capitalize on this massive opportunity.

Their Instagram posts go back to 2017, so I'd definitely temper my expectations. I would imagine the other proposed linear park down Bastrop would be moving at a quicker pace than this one.

That might be the case but Houston, nor the US had the 2026 World Cup back in 2017. Landing hosting duties earlier this year likely changes things and might have revived this project. Maybe new ownership (Ted Segal) and its reinvestment into the Dynamo/Dash and PNC Stadium renovations possibly contributed as well. Their timeline clearly state’s community engagement meetings begin in January so we’ll see.

The other linear park on Bastrop (East End Promenade) you speak of has long been completed, albeit at a scaled down version from the original vision.

From what I can glean above, he bought Block 161 in 2016 where the Home Plate Bar and Grill was and then (maybe?) an additional 1.738 acres of land (which I think is equivalent a full city block) in 2019--maybe block 119?  Or maybe he just bought a single block.

    Here's a block map I found:

    https://www.downtownhouston.org/media/uploads/attachments/2019-07-31/140627_Block_Map2.pdf

What is with Avenida de las Americas running straight through blocks 119, 120, and 121 BTW?  Were these blocks divided when the Convention Center was built?  Sure would be nice to have MMP fully connected to the Convention Center area by something other than parking lots.

Crane owns part of 119 after the city abandoned Chenevert through the site.

The ballpark mixed use development at the Home Plate site (161 + 119) would help serve as the connection to the Convention Center area. The only block undeveloped remaining would be the super block of 120 & 100.

Edit: Crane might also own block 27 where the South Texas Intermediate Halfway House was recently demolished

2nd Edit: Crane also own the Jackson Street BBQ site on Block 115.

    https://www.houstonchronicle.com/food-culture/restaurants-bars/article/Downtown-s-Jackson-Street-BBQ-closes-after-8-16991784.php

Owner Bill Floyd, who opened the restaurant with pitmaster Greg Gatlin and then partner Bryan Caswell, said he chose not to renew the lease at 209 Jackson owned by Astros owner and chairman Jim Crane.

Another dining concept is opening soon in Finn Hall, the food hall at 712 Main St. The food stall is Firenoodz. I'm assuming this is a noodle concept based on the name. I don't know if this will be a regional Chinese, Korean, Japanese, or an Asian-fusion restaurant.

I think this may be a new concept from the group behind Oh My Gogi. There are no permits, filings, entities, or websites for Firenoodz. There are also no articles, blurbs, or social media posts about it. There is, however, an Instagram that seems to be connected to the restaurant.

FireNudes …that was my first thought.

    I have a dirty mind

I may be wrong, but I don't think this is the same development.

This is the Mix. Where Artisans is located is called the Mix @ Midtown (3201 Louisiana). Two different developments, if I'm not mistaken (or at least, according to several other posters in this topic).

Here's a visual outlining where this development is located, which isn't the Mix @ Midtown at 3201 Louisiana:

Linked below is the topic for the Mix @ Midtown , the development at 3201 Louisiana (it would help if mods modified the title to add the correct name for that mixed-use, maybe it would cut down on some of the confusion (I was confused by this too)). The news about Artisans is posted there since it's about the Mix @ Midtown, the mixed-use at 3201 Louisiana:

The Mix never got built (except for Pearl at The Mix on Travis, disjointed from the other two Pearls on Elgin). Both Mix sites are across Elgin from each other. Like one big project with 2 phases. Would’ve been nice if built.

  6. This is confusing as that building already had renovations recently completed. I pass by it every day. The ground floor is ready for build out wherever it’s leased. Has a nice center court view you can see from the street. Would make a nice spot for a restaurant.

Are you sure he’s not talking about the ballpark village? Unless I’m turned around, this current construction is more North or East of the stadium than West.

Pretty certain. Ballpark Village is south side of the park. West would be along Crawford and the Astros had this plot along with the old halfway house plot directly across Crawford from where this activity is on going.

They’ve got parcels to do something with so I wouldn’t be surprised if there was another project separate from the ballpark village.

I was thinking more along the lines of a road being renamed. I'm sure there's some road named after a confederate supporter that still needs renamed.

Avenida De Las Americas is a mouthful. Could rename it to Richard Kinder Blvd.

Or you rename the Downtown portion of Dallas Street too to avoid confusion with W Dallas St. But that might more work with changing addresses than renaming ADLA.

If this ends up being a team store/Astros hall of fame then @tigereye deserves an award for suggesting this a couple years ago haha.

Wouldn’t be the first idea come to reality.

In 2018, I tweeted out an idea for a rooftop brewery. Eventually Michelob Ultra deck was built.

I was able to talk to one of the construction workers today (nice guy) and he told me that they’re  expanding and building a new team store that will expand out in the place of where the trees were. If I understood him correctly this thing will be huge. I asked him if it will be just a new team store or perhaps a restaurant or other space as well but he sounded unsure. Half of the facade that stretched from the end of the tracks right the center field entrance was off already. I’m surprised we haven’t heard or seen any renderings 🤷🏻‍♂️

Could be something larger. On a DM with Mike Acosta:

I’m not certain. There were big plans for the west side of the ballpark. Not sure if this is part of it on a smaller scale or if it is the beginning of that big project.

I suspect Tilman is eager to make improvements to Toyota Center.  I'd be surprised if we don't get significant improvements along with the new naming rights agreement.

Tilman was already quoted back in 2018 as they were looking at major renovations. The pandemic probably held that up but I would have to figure soon we’ll hear something about this, especially with the Astros ballpark village plans on the horizon.

They have retrofitted a number of areas and plan to continue making upgrades including what Fertitta calls a “major overhaul” in the next five years. “We have a lot of ideas and a lot of plans on what we are going to be doing,”

It looks like a new business is going to operate at 1111 Prairie Street soon.

Signage permits indicates an eatery, possibly Mexican, named El Pubelo. The permit also shows Campesino Coffee will operate here.

Campesino is expanding here. They’re in the process of renovations to the old Hubcap space currently

HERE WE GO! This is what we've been waiting for.

Not exactly. This is NOT the Greyhound bus station but the old building across the street, although it provides bus service too.

The Greyhound bus station specifically needs to go. And no more TDC prisoner drop offs there either.

From what I understand, in an agreement with the city, he was given 4 years to get something out of the ground. It's already been 2 years since that agreement and he said about 4 months ago something would happen in roughly a year. So based off all of that, I'm expecting a groundbreaking some time in Fall on some part of the plan.

The agreement Crane has with the city is only for the home plate site on Texas @ ADLA. This site will be a mixed used ballpark development project.

Not sure what Crane’s plans are for the other parcels of land he owns around the ballpark.

My unscientific observation is that there are some pockets in the tunnels that seem to be fully "back", but overall, while you always had a lot of turnover in the shops, there are a lot more empty stalls than there were historically with only a handful of new places opening.  I'd guess there will be consolidation with the successful places getting concentrated and fill their empty holes while the other locations find some other alternate use.

The remaining open/accessible places are doing well, again in spots. The pan-Asian food court under the Jason's Deli at Main/McKinney is frequently jammed as is the expanded space under Pennzoil and the new BofA  building does good business, though a few of the stalls did not reopen after Covid.   Allen Center seems humming along just fine too.

The HC shops are a hot mess, The area around the former Beck's is almost completely dead, and Chase tower is down an Alonti and a pizza shop but up a Brown Bag Deli.

All of the Alonti locations downtown have closed up.

919 Milam is undergoing renovation work, which is why Beck’s Prime and Brown Bag Deli are closed. Neither of their spaces (nor DiMassi’s) has cleared out so they’ll likely reopen after the renovation is done.

From what I’ve seen last year to currently, YES I’d say the tunnels feel like they’re back now, especially in the last few weeks.
