I don’t remember a bunch of Carter supporters storming the Capitol, threatening a Civil War, or Nixon becoming president again in 1980, but pls correct me if I’m wrong.

In my recollection, the 1980 election hinged on inflation and the appearance of weakness in the sitting president, not on Watergate or other political events that had happened four or more years earlier.

Times were different then. Politicians had some sense of honor, and tended to be fairly decent people who actually got along with their political opposites and could discuss things rationally with them.

And so the expectation is that people will love how the Biden administration has done things and re-elect him?

The brilliance of that Reagan campaign slogan was that it encapsulates the tendency of voters to consider if they are doing better or worse under the current president.  That needle is decidedly in the red right now.

Only in the feverest of fever dreams.  The only way this happens is if they cancel or override the elections.  (Which, admittedly, they're pretty much openly saying they will do now, so I suppose certainly within the realm of possibility.)

I don't recall the elections of 1980, 1984, and 1988 being cancelled or overridden and I can, unfortunately, remember the Carter presidency.

Well, actually we may not have to wait until 2024.  The Former Guy is now calling for the 2020 election to be called for him, almost 2 years after the fact, and if that doesn't work, a "do-over" election.  So, I guess Biden may actually be out before 2024, considering this will eventually become the official position of the Republican Party and its base of wannabe Confederates.

Trump Demands a New 2020 Election Right Now! (nymag.com)

Not likely the RNC would officially push this.  Too much hay to be made over the next two election cycles on deep state and media interference in our democracy at the behest of the DNC.  It's kind of like how the Dems complain about Dreamers but then don't actually do something about it.  Makes a great talking point.  Plus I'm sure they want to let the Jimmy Carter II scenario play out.  Could be 12 years of Republican white house ascendancy starting in 2024.

A little research would show that this is entirely attributable to a change in how they counted enforcement actions--see

CBP Enforcement Statistics Fiscal Year 2022 | U.S. Customs and Border Protection

"Beginning in March FY20,  OFO Encounters statistics include both Title 8  Inadmissibles and Title 42 Expulsions. To learn more, visit: Title-8-and-Title-42-Statistics. Inadmissibles refers to individuals encountered at ports of entry who are seeking lawful admission into the United States but are determined to be inadmissible, individuals presenting themselves to seek humanitarian protection under our laws, and individuals who withdraw an application for admission and return to their countries of origin within a short timeframe."

"Beginning in March FY20,  USBP Encounters statistics include both Title 8  Apprehensions and Title 42 Expulsions. To learn more, visit: Title-8-and-Title-42-Statistics. Apprehensions refers to the physical control or temporary detainment of a person who is not lawfully in the U.S. which may or may not result in an arrest."

This page shows counts of those, which were not in the data prior to March 2020:

Title 8 Apprehensions and Title 42 Expulsions: 1.817MM for the 10-month period ended July 2022.

Title 8 Inadmissibles and Title 42 Expulsions: 201K for the 10-month period ended July 2022.

Your data appears to be some subset of the CBP enforcement action data.

(I mean, c'mon, you could see from one look at that that something was very likely off . . . why politicize?)

So you're saying this is fake news from CNN?  I guess that's not too surprising, then...

GrAbbott's problem is that the busses he is loading with illegal aliens are headed north and not south.

He doesn't have the option of sending them south.  The current administration has already allowed them in.  Gotta do something, there's been a curious spike in illegal crossings since the Biden administration took over.

In other news, Greg Abbott called Beto a poo-poo head and blamed the DFW floods on critical race theory and the Uvalde school shootings on Hillary Clinton.  What does everyone think the chances are that Joe Biden will resign?  #RedWave!

Well, at least Abbott got it half right.

By resigning do you mean not running in 2024?  I thought that was being pushed by Dems worried that a senile president with a record comparable to Jimmy Carter might not be the best candidate.

Dang parking lot! *shakes fist in the air* 🤬 ... still looking beautiful, though!  😍

I think you must mean awesome parking lot that allows for greater access to the park. 👍

Plus, you have to have somewhere to park food trucks...🍦🌮

Owners of the nearly century-old downtown Esperson building will convert parts of its office space into multifamily units, part of the greater trend of repurposing old office space as tenants flock to newer, highly amenitized buildings.

The building at 808 Travis St. was first built in the 1940s, and was the largest office building built during the Great Depression, as well as the first Houston skyscraper to have central air conditioning. The renovations, designed by Gensler, will add multifamily units as well as an amenity space on the 17th floor, available to both residents and office tenants.

Plans for the amenity space call for removing the roof on the northwest corner of the 17th floor to create an outdoor-indoor space, with a rooftop swimming pool, a dog park, a speak-easy, a wellness facility, indoor and outdoor lounge areas, and a space for catered meetings.

    They're opening a speak-easy?

Funny, my first thought was about how much extra they are going to have to charge for the bbq to pay for all of that parking 😁

Looked up the pricing from the Dallas location. $14.50 for a sausage sandwich by itself.

I'm sure they chose the location for a reason.  It's not like the Heights is a cheap eats destination.  Plus, if they want to sell down the road they'll get a pretty penny for that combined lot, most of which will be cleared, buildable space.

Most of the Chinese restaurants were east of downtown. I vaguely remember a two-story center with a large Chinese restaurant downstairs.

There is still a Kim Son just east of downtown in the old chinatown area.  I recall a largish chinese restaurant on or near Fanin that served dim sum.  That place closed around the time the built the red line.  Can't remember the name of the place, though.

I remember when people would call Midtown "Little Saigon," but there was really more a pan-Asian thing going on.  There's only a few remnants of the Asian influence left in Midtown, like the auto repair shop at Main and Hadley with the sign written in what appears to me to be Chinese, but I could be wrong.  Here's how it looks in Apple Maps:

There was a pretty long article in the Chronicle a few Sundays ago about the last of old Chinatown, behind the GRB, about to be wiped out by the I-45 project.  The people interviewed didn't seem all that bothered by it.

I'll note here that HAIF's very first sponsor was Jenny's Noodles, when it opened its first shop in Chinatown, now EaDo.

At this point there really isn't much left of the old Chinatown.

There was another Chinese restaurant in Midtown which was part of a sort of Chinese mall. It was located on the superblock where Camedon McGowen Station apartments now stands, and it included the aforementioned restaurant, a grocery store, and other assorted small shops.
Does anyone remember the name of the mall and the restaurant located there?

I remember that mall.  Went to the grocery store there a few times when we first moved to Houston in '99.

Triggered might be a stretch, she is certainly defensive.  Not a great look.

In the video she's refuting someone's claim that she's defunding the police and cites the large chunk of the budget that goes to law enforcement.  Why then, are police organizations backing Mealer and not Hidalgo?

Given the name, perhaps it will feature ritual human sacrifice with obsidian daggers. If you're going to dip your toes in the waters of Mayan cultural appropriation in the service of hipster craft cocktails, you'd better come up with something more compelling than pickleball and cornhole.

Perhaps they should play the Mayan ballgame of death at the stadium?

Oh happy day, have been waiting for years for Houston to become some cosplay Fallujah.

Can't she just go run off and play Paintball?

Maybe instead of a debate we can have an Hidalgo vs Mealer paintball match?

Since you mentioned Fallujah, interestingly enough a quick search for homicide rates in Iraq shows an average of 10 per 100,000 for 2013 (latest year I could find), down from 16 per 100,000 in 2008.

    https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/VC.IHR.PSRC.P5?locations=IQ

Per the chron article below we had 20 per 100,000 in 2021.

Only 1,200 sf, too, the size of a 2-bedroom apartment.  Sounds like they're building out a glorified conference room.

This is how big companies sideline someone who's annoying but too high up to fire outright.  Corporate equivalent of Siberia.  😜

Good thing I had not planned to buy anything from Mack. He needs to focus on business and charity and not play partisan politics.

To be honest, I've never seen anything in his store I've been tempted to buy.  It is an interesting place to walk through if you're in the area just to see the kitsch and memorabilia he's accumulated, though.
