  1. I agree that the venue name really should really not matter, but lets be honest if the HOB in HP was called "Club" there would not be near the discussion about it, when it is opening, or who will play there much less the decorations and architecture of it. So it seems to me that sadly many in this forum have bought right into it and really it should not be called HOB because the first acts are gangsta rappas and comedians, but again if it was called "club" and they were charging 200 to see a tired gangsta rappa and have the joy of getting in the cross fire of some athlete and his possie most on here would be laughing how a place called "club" thought they would ever get anyone to pay those prices for some fools to spray you with champagne....fortunately there are some intelligent people in this forum that so see through it....but not enough
  2. the sources would be the multitude of rankings from just about every source of rankings for universities that consistantly rank 4 year residental research universities with full time, tenure track, faculty higher than commuter schools full of adjunct faculty be it US News and some of their flaws or Business Week or sources that are specific to areas of study, the fact is that 4 year residental schools consistantly rank ahead of any commuter school full of adjunct faculty and the vast majority of time the students that come out of the 4 year schools start out higher paid and in higher positions than the students out of the commuter schools name me any 4 year commuter school in any area of study that ranks highly in any ranking using any method of evaluation......you can choose to believe what you wish, but the reality is very clear for anyone that has their eyes open
  3. what will HOB become when it shuts its doors in a year or two can we discuss that here or should I start a new thread it is amazing for all the people that complain on this forum about chain food they think nothing of drooling over chain entertainment especially at stupid prices HOB is a joke and destined to go the way of planet hollywierd in short order and really 125 pages for a shopping mall in downtown and the HPs website seems to be down right now....not a good start
  4. there are thousands if not tens of thousands of employers in Houston and many probably have HR people that are not from Houston or do not even live in Houston and many probably do not keep up with the daily goings on of universities and their affiliations to one another....but they probably do know the basics that UH means a quality college of business and a quality college of engineering and could easily assume that UHD holds to those same standards when that is far from the truth....A college education is about what is learned in and out of the classroom and that experience is heightened in a residential campus setting with tenure track, full time faculty VS a commuter campus with part time adjuncts UH has worked to elevate their status and their students in many departments have worked hard to be admitted and graduate from those departments and they deserve to have recognition for that and not be confused with others and just because you have a conspiracy theory behind why there is a push for a name change that does not mean it is true no wonder our country is growing fuller of lazy slackers every day.....when people work hard for something people like you wish to call them "big", evil, or elitist, and wish to reward others the same that did not put in the same effort and were not subjected to the same rigors for their education If it is as you see it then there is nothing to worry about for those at UHD because all that matters is a piece of paper that says degree on it and a major and what school is comes from is of no consequence so people coming out of UHD with a different name will have nothing at all to worry about because they have the piece of paper, but we all know that in reality this is far from true and that is what bothers people like you the most.....that some would actually wish to work harder and separate themselves from the pack and then be rewarded for it.......and we all know to make America better we need to end thinking like that and reward all equally no matter how much or how little effort they put in because that is "fair" and really good touchy feelies for everyone also the name change might not make a difference over night, but UH is about to raise admissions dramatically which will mean that UHD and other schools will become larger because they will catch those that did not get admitted to UH.....UH suffers from a very low graduation % and as they raise admissions and bring in more residential students and try and raise their graduation % and their external funded research and their % of graduate students the difference between a degree from UH and UHD will grow larger so the time to make a name change is at the time when UH is looking to further elevate themselves not after it is all done....so the time to make the change is now, not after UH becomes a nationally recognized graduate and research university with an even higher level of funding and higher quality faculty and students
  5. because they are two separate universities that are about to go on dramatically separate paths UH is going to raise admissions standards pretty quickly and attempt to gain more state funding to be the or one of the next "tier 1" universities in Texas with a goal of 100 million plus in externally funded research and attempt to open a medical school and gain a larger on campus population while UHD will continue to be an open admissions school with primarily commuter students as for those that make ignorant comments about UH worrying about minorities and the association with them it was UHD that proposed the name change not UH and UH is one of the most diverse campuses in the US as for the association with an open enrollment school UH has built up a number of quality programs in Business and other areas and those students that gain admissions to those programs based on hard work and grades deserve to have their degree recognized for the higher standards UH has over UHD
  6. UH-Downtown is not splitting from the system just changing the name to alleviate some confusion
  7. it would be best to replace them if you were going to transfer a tree balled and burlaped you want the root ball at least as big as the crown of the tree as you can see in these pix the trees have been growing and have outgrown the origional root ball which is what uprooted and they left a great deal of new growing roots in the ground these trees are also highly stressed and will lose a ton of leaves just as the colder season comes on so they will be attempting some growth and fresh leafing when they get frosted and they will be short on reserves for the winter next year and the years after you would have a stressed crappy looking tree in a nice public area better to pull up and start over
  8. I believe the 933,000 sqft is the total available contiguous space on the first floor and the 1.8 million is the total sqft of the building including the second and third floor meeting, ballrooms, check in areas, and convocation areas there is no reason that GRB should not be able to expand to the north because there would still be two more streets to the north one going in each direction.....I doubt there would be any serious traffic concerns with taking out one more street
  9. those are all horrible, but the two I put in bold.......why not just call it welfare state university I would like to see the fools that suggested those
  10. it will stay a part of the UH System 1. Because I see no mention of them wanting to break away 2. Because Texas will not allow any more independent state universities
  11. wasn't there a guy that had a ramp build up one side of the stadium so he could get a better start before the jump....I am pretty sure I was there to see him, but that was many moons ago and did anyone see the match between the boxer and the wrestler after the Astros game......the boxer was pretty bigtime and the wrestler was a greco roman type (not the paul bosch type).....again I am pretty sure I was there.....either way I watched it live or on TV........it sucked the wrestler spent the whole time walking around like a crab trying to trip up the boxer and the boxer spent the whole time moving around hoping the wrestler would stand up
  12. perhaps one of the dumbest comparisons I have ever seen on the internet
  13. what makes Australia any different than what the USA has now......with the exception that people in the USA end up with an unenforceable blemish on their credit record that will not prevent them from getting credit for any consumer good they wish also as for the tort reform not getting rid of bad doctors.....it seems lil johnny edwards and his lawsuits did not get rid of them either.....it just made insurance more expensive for all the good doctors
  14. but it has brought in a flood of new doctors and as for the poster above me......does more "equitable" mean that those who work and can afford to pay have to suffer like those who do not work and/or refuse to provide insurance for themselves.......it is really equitable to provide the same to everyone regardless of what they try and provide for themselves.......some people have nicer cars with warranties on them....some have old clunkers with no warranty....should we adjust that "inequality" as well
  15. lets end all malpractice lawsuits that are filed for profit first if profit is bad then lawyers profiting off of people having mistakes made in medical procedures should be evil
  16. they should have put the parking garage where I circled in red and then where it is (circled in purple) could be for a building with the park view the lot in red is way down in value now compared to the one circled in purple also how can a building go where I colored in blue when there is already a large power/utility building there currently? and a bit off subject, but does that utility plant need to be next to the Hilton Americas?
  17. I can completely agree with the first statement if he is as good or better than most students in the College of Music at UNt then he should be pretty damn good....I am not an expert on music, but I think bass is a pretty crowded area....so that is no help....but if he is that good he could make it in music......many from UNT do.....some very early right from school and some it takes a long time.....voice seems to me to be where there is the least available talent.....philosophy......dead end.....but hey smoking pot can be fun too
  18. your friend is in a world of hurt.....I have been a student at a number of schools in Texas and UNT was BY FAR the worst......while many that go there and pump sunshine for UNT claim their philosophy program is highly ranked the fact is that UNT breaks their programs down into very small niches most of which are things that few if any other schools offer.....like their environmental philosophy program (whatever the hell that is)......and just as you seem to know there is ZERO demand for people with a degree that involves sitting around on a hot rock, buck naked, pondering life......UNT has a high quality music program, but I don't think a minor in music will do much from there because that minor is probably outside the college of music or it is structured in a way that he will rarely be associating with the true music majors or the high caliber professors much less will he get a recommendation from them......the UNT college of music is very standoffish from the rest of the university so as to not be drug down by the ineptitude of most of the rest of the university.....in fact music education majors are not offered through the college of music they are offered through the college of education for just that reason and philosophy degrees even up to a PhD are in very low demand because there are so many out there that just keep going through school stuck in that same philosophy rut until they get a PhD and then find starting salaries barely cover the student loans I would encourage him to drop philosophy like the hot rock he is sitting on and try and move into some type of cross between music and computers or some type of music production.....I have a friend with an RTVF degree from UNT and he now works as a producer for a public radio station and on the side he puts together people to do add jingles......he can get them sent to him in an MP3 or other format and he can edit all himself.....I don't know how big he has taken that, but it was extra income....if your friend is in a minor in the college of music then he should have some very good talent.....but often at UNT people in the college of music will leave without the degree because opportunity too good to turn down will come along and in music you either have it or you don't.....short of working in HR I can think of next to nothing to do with a philosophy undergrad degree and short of gigging or doing jingles I can not think of much to do with a music minor....unless one goes back and gets a teaching certification for the record I was a Computer Science major at UNT and left needing one last CS course that I could not get for 9+ months and a second semester physics course and two garbage courses that UNT refused to recognize from other schools that were far better than UNT.....and the fact that I already had an undergrad degree in a totally different subject
  19. yes the state funds UH-D UH-D will not be called Texas State-Anything because it is a member of the UH System VS being a member of the Texas State System http://www.uhsa.uh.edu/ http://www.tsus.edu/ while I feel the Texas State System consist of a number of schools that have done well especially in light of the low higher ed funding in Texas I would prefer to see the Texas State System go away......it is what is called a "weak system" where even though they are all in a "system" the individual universities still lobby for funding on their own The Texas State System is trying to move towards a "strong" system where each school has their funding lobbied for by the system chancellor......similar to the UH System, UT System, TAMU System, and Texas Tech System Angelo State left the Texas State System last year for the Tech system because they felt they were going to (and already being) left behind or ignored in a strong system for the schools east of I-35......so far Tech and Angelo State have been very happy together I would like to see Lamar and Sam Houston go with UH and Sul Ross go with Tech and then Texas State given a choice of what system to join.....and then the overhead of the Texas State system sent to the former members of that system for direct university funding....I feel Lamar especially fits in very well with what UH offers and Sam Houston would fit in with UH as well and Sul Ross would fit in well with Tech I would see Texas State either with TAMU or with Tech.....I would doubt they would want to join the UT System and I do not think Texas is going to allow any more independent universities also what makes UH-D and UH different than the UT schools or the TAMU schools is that none of the UT or TAMU schools are in the same city....while UH and UH-D are very close UH-Cinco Ranch and UH-Sugarland are not separate schools.....they are a part of the UH main campus......the classes and degree programs there are the same as UH on Cullen and they have the same president (Dr. Khator) or in the case of Sugarland some of the degrees are actually through Victoria........while as mentioned before the UH-D and UH classes are not always the same nor are the degree plans and UH-D has its own president and admissions.....so it defeats the purpose of having them be separate schools with their own president and class/degree/admissions requirements when people think they are another "system center" like Cinco Ranch and Sugarland UH-Clear Lake and UH Victoria are both separate school, but they have the other city in their name so it is less difficult to confuse them and to understand they are separate universities with their own president ect.
  20. where are Richie, Ralph, and Pottsie going to play now and where will the Fonz hit the juke box to get free songs
  21. Dr. Khatur is new to UH less than 6 months and I understood it was the president of UH-D that wanted the change with the idea that UH-D will be growing when UH raises admissions standards in the future Houston Metropolitan University would be my choice
  22. yes, but baseball has been berry berry good to Chico!
  23. Rodeo reminds me a friend had some pretty good tickets for Hank Williams Jr. one rodeo season and me and some other friends went when we were all about 14 my one friend was going crazy yelling and screaming and jumping up and down during Hank and the people behind us got the usher to try and tell us we would get kicked out if we did not calm down.....we told them they were just mad a bunch of kids had better seats than they did and let him keep going crazy.......it was a concert and RODEO people
