  1. The off-street option is by far the better of the two.
  2. I'll join them in opposing BRT on Post Oak if they support my subway idea for Post Oak. I'll be waiting over here.
  3. The Positive Train Control that was supposed to be installed on this curve will be there from Day 1 on the Texas Central line. That's one of the things that was discussed at the meeting - the FRA philosophy has been crash survivability up to this point. JR/Shinkansen/TCR philosophy has always been crash prevention. Much of TCR's struggle up to this point has been bringing FRA around to the merits of this position, and incidents like this one speak strongly in its favor. While the seven deaths are undoubtedly tragic, the Texas highway death statistics that beam from the VMS boards around the state do put that number into perspective.
  4. Most likely because the current legislative session is about to adjourn, and by the time the next session opens, the line will be a fait accompli. Reading between the lines, it suggests that the Abbot administration is supportive of the project to the point that he wouldn't call a special session in order to get the line blocked.

  7. It's stripping them of the funding to review the over and underpasses, not to construct them.
  8. It's an incremental process, hedging the potential pedestrian traffic by ensuring proximity to the single-family homes nearby. It reminds me of the development that's been done on Connecticut Ave in DC, given the similar mix of apartment buildings and single family homes nearby.

  18. I was wondering where these thoughts came from... you're spot on with the point of the project. Personally, I think it's worth it, mainly because given the above issues, there's no way to fix downtown for through traffic. Took 210 both ways last weekend, since 10 was jam packed due to lane closures.

On the other hand, I think this is more demonstrative of deficiencies in peripheral freeway system for through traffic, rather than the downtown system itself. 610 is being underutilized for through traffic. This is primarily because of the West Loop and 290 bottlenecks. TxDOT's Houston Division signing policies do not encourage utilization of peripheral routes. If 610 had "Dallas", "Beaumont", "San Antonio", "Galveston" and "Victoria" control cities in appropriate locations, rather than having blank control cities, through traffic would be more inclined to use the route to bypass downtown, as originally intended. This is particularly egregious for I-45 through traffic, where the downtown route and the 610 East Loop route are essentially equivalent.Thoughts?

  21. Agree with this wholeheartedly. Likewise, I don't quite understand the criticisms about this being TxDOT kowtowing to Midtown yuppies. That isn't how Houston works, nor has it ever has been. If anything, it's acquiescing to the desire of developers who see 13 blocks with a potentially unique amenity - a direct ramp to and from the northern and western suburbs, while knitting Midtown and Downtown together. I don't see this as being a residential play at all - it's the kind of spot where you'd want monumental commercial projects that would command significant premiums.
  22. I was there too, and I got some good information, but mostly based on what went unsaid. Also, I don't think I'm 20 years older than you, unless you're 10 For one, I'm fully expecting the station to be at the NW Mall site, even though I've been, and still remain a big Downtown station supporter. Secondly, even if the eminent domain bill goes through, it's not the end of the world, and that's all I'll say about that. Third, there are a lot of people who are extremely unfamiliar with trains, and immediately expect the worst.
  23. Archstone must be panicking with regard to the Lofts at the Ballpark building that will get condemned in the process.
  24. Read an article talking about demolishing both the Dome and Reliant in about 7-8 years. One of the commentators suggested rebuilding the complex as a "new Astrodome" for the Texans and the Rodeo, with as many bells and whistles as the original had. While it seems silly to demolish Reliant after only 20 years, that seems to be the trend these things are going nowadays. The above is a demolition plan that I would support. If Yankee Stadium can be torn down for a similar replacement, so can the Dome.
  25. Perhaps it's kept secret to be held as a hedge in case the Grand Central/Post Office site falls through. It would strengthen the position of those opposed to that site to know that TCR already has holdings at the NW Mall site.
