  1. Manchester United will play vs. MLS all-stars in the MLS all-star game in a few months at Reliant Stadium. I wonder if we even had our new stadium up by now if they would play there? I doubt it; kinda sad in a way, but at the same time understandable.

    http://www.nj.com/so...o_face_mls.html

That should easily draw over 21,000 so even if it was built I think they would be having this at Reliant. They might even fill that place.

  2. The study, the first of its kind, assessed a variety of blog posts and comments, message-board chatter and tweets from April 4 through April 25.

Ok now this makes sense. The Astros started 0-8, of course they would have the most negative "chatter" during that time period. They shouldn't be allowed to call this a study or put numbers to it.

  3. Neither was available when the Texans picked at 20. I think they got a solid Cornerback which, along with Running Back, was the biggest need. Hopefully we can get a good Running Back today in Round 2.

Yeah those were kind of the dream picks, but with both being gone in the top 10 it wasn't likely. Too bad the guy they got is from 'bama. Loser.

I didn't watch on tv because I was out to dinner for my anniversary, but it seems like it was kind of a boring draft aside from a couple of picks (Tebow and whoever your team is). Good enough for prime time? I guess so, on a cable channel. I would have watched if I was at home. I will not watch tonight or over the weekend though, so I think maybe this first round move to Thursday will hurt the viewers that normally stuck around for the 2nd-3rd rounds. It's Friday, they'll be out partying.

  4. on what merits are you calling him a douche?

So you agree he was at least 'roided up...as for douche, a friend of mine was good friends with his wife/girlfriend (different?) and crossed paths with him at least half a dozen times, and stated that he was a douche. I don't care either way really. I just think he looked like something was up his arse when he batted, like in this excellent rendering by Highway6

    Bagwell2.jpg

  5. what do you mean, because he hung around so long with his huge contract, keeping us from signing other big free agents?

Or because he was a 'roided up douche? The Astros should have shopped Berkman last year. He's past his prime now and they need young talent in a bad way.

  6. I can't believe no one has been motivated to start the 2010 Astros topic yet!!!! Wait, 0-7 and less than 2 runs per game so far? Ouch. It would be easier if we could say it was pitching or hitting, but it's both. Ok try to find a positive...no one has more than 1 HR...no pitchers with wins...team leader has 3 RBI (Placido Polanco had 6 in 1 game)...team leader has 2 runs...well they are in the top half of MLB in fielding percentage!...and Oswalt's ERA is decent at 3.75!

This has to be one of the worst starts I've seen in years. I know it's just a small set of games, but dang. I think their success must be indirectly related to the price of beer and other concessions, because there's no logical reason for a professional team to be this bad.

  7. Yes, but concession prices are extremely abusive at most of the big places. If they charged a sensible markup I would be more inclined. I am much more likely to buy food at Alamo Drafthouse, where the prices for actual food and beer are roughly in line with what you would pay at a casual restaurant. Its kind of shocking, actually, to be getting quality beer for less than Edwards charges for a Coca Cola.

Now if they would just venture inside the Loop...

No doubt! I haven't been in about 6 years but I was all about some Alamo Drafthouse happy hour movie time. Different specials each day, beer or food. We always sneak our food into the theater these days, but only go about once ever 2 years because of kids and $. I'd rather blow my money on something else, like sushi.

  8. Yes, our visitors from India have commented likewise. Why don't Presbyterians dance anyway?

Yeah southern baptists and pentacostals, not presbyterians from what I've observed. And the reason, of course, is that dancing makes kids irresponsible and all want to have sex. Didn't you see Footloose?

  9. I drive right by downtown every morning while it's still dark, and I prefer the buildings that appear ghostly, rising up in the night lit only by muted interior lighting. It just looks and feels cool to me. The overtly flashy lit ones usually stand out the first time I notice them, but after seeing it many times I kind of want them to turn it down and highlight another one that maybe I haven't noticed.

  10. New email

    To All Our Loyal Friends,

Our previous email has been misunderstood by some of The Presidential Park & Gardens' most passionate supporters.

Since day one, Mayor Reid and all the city of Pearland’s government, including city council, department heads, staff, and city manager Bill Eisen have been extremely supportive of the vision for the Presidential Park and Gardens. Our earlier email request to voice your opinions to city government was intended to heighten the importance of your POSITIVE SUPPORT of the Presidential Park and Gardens to city leaders. In no way were the city leaders anything but supportive of the Presidential Park and Gardens. The earlier email request was intended to encourage your “bold” positive support and to inform the city officials, that you, as a citizen of Pearland, consider the park important to the city’s identity, community pride, and commerce.

The reason the project was foreclosed was due to our inability to negotiate a modification and extension of our loan with terms acceptable to the development and Amegy Mortgage during one of the worst real estate recessions in American history.

Please only send positive words of support to Mayor Reid and city council members, as they have been very responsible in managing potential risks, while at the same time being supportive of our development plan. They need to know that you are FOR or AGAINST the Presidential Park & Gardens being developed in the Pearland area.

Let’s bring the Park back to Pearland.

    Sincerely,

The Developers of WaterLights™ and the Presidential Park and Gardens

  11. They should charge by weight. Put you and your bags on that big scale at the counter, charge a fee accordingly. Then you can either check your bags or carry them on. First 150 lbs (person included) is free; charge for the rest, whatever. Then stop nickel and diming us on everything else.

This would be great, but I can hear the discrimination cries already. You can't get more logical, the cost to move someone (in fuel terms) is directly proportional to their weight. So perhaps they apply this logic only to the fuel cost portion of a fare and leave all else equal. Especially since on more than one occasion I've had to suffer through a flight next to some gigantic person who takes up half of my seat. They should be required to buy 2 seats, and I should get my damn money back. I know there is a policy that you have to buy 2 seats if you are large, but they don't enforce it.

  12. If they would do a survey I think they would find that the vast majority of folks would prefer they just keep everything included in the fare and raise the fare a bit. No one likes being nickel and dimed to death.

  13. Latest email:

    To all:

We are extremely sad to inform each of you that Amegy Mortgage, a subsidiary of Zions Bancorporation, will foreclose tomorrow on the 48 acres of land that was planned to be home to The Presidential Park & Gardens and the WaterLights District, in Pearland, Texas.

The six statues on the property will be removed starting tomorrow morning at 9am and returned to storage in the Heights area. The presidential monuments are not part of the foreclosure.

The Presidential Park & Gardens was planned to become a national destination attraction featuring giant statues of the U.S. Presidents and an educational tour of American History. The park was projected to attract millions of tourist to the area, as well as an educational field trip opportunity for thousands of school children from the greater Houston area, all ofTexas, as well as the other states.

We are actively evaluating alternative sites for the destination park to be relocated. Our team is sincerely sorry we were not able to deliver on our plans to build a world-class community and destination complex in Pearland.

Thank you so much for your support over the years. It's the right idea, with the wrong bank, during one of the worst commercial real estate markets in history

Please be bold about your desires for the park in Pearland to your elected leaders. We encourage you to email and/or call the elected officials and Amegy Bank to let them know how disappointed you are to lose The Presidential Park & Gardens and the WaterLights District.

Stay tuned, we won't give up.

    Sincerely,

    Developers of

    The Presidential Park & Gardens

    and WaterLights

  14. CALLIOPE'S!!!! It's very good! Kind of a Timmy Chan's take on the New Orleans PoBoy.

    Here's the Houston Press article...

FINALLY got around to going here. It's perfect, it's the place we've been searching for ever since moving from Louisiana. I'll be back regularly. So few places in Houston do it right when it comes to Cajun (don't even joke about Ragin Cajun...they try, but not quite).

  15. Fair enough, if you like where you live now. You probably would have liked the Pearland of 20 years ago more than now. I moved out there 20 years ago this fall and I liked it MUCH better then.

But, you were the one who said "But I will be forever bitter that my office is down there and I have to drive from the city to the goat farm every day." Just trying to save you a little bitterness, that's all. ;)

Yes I was a bit hard on the goat farm, I really don't mind it. It's the suburban pieces that annoy me.

  16. You have a reverse commute and you're complaining? At one time Pearland had a certain rural charm, as recently as five years ago, and pockets of it still exist. Now it's just becoming suburbia. Still, if you work in Pearland and live in Houston, it seems like you could move to Pearland and come out ahead financially and in quality of life. Just sayin.'

I don't see how moving to Pearland would improve my quality of life in any way. I do think I would like Pearland more 20 years ago than now. My commute is easy, not much traffic, just long. I definitely live where I want though.

  17. Apparently I signed up for email updates. Ironically, this is the only one I ever received (today):
