  1. Great. Drive till you kill someone else. Good philosophy. Nice to think of others.

You're assuming I drive like that. I don't. That's the point, I do think of others. I just might not come to that complete stop, or I might decide that at 2am this left turn red light is idiotic when I am the only one on the road. No one is dying because of me, it's way more because of the incompetent people out there who don't keep good track of their surroundings. When some idiot does drive like an idiot or kill someone, then you prosecute or ticket them. Not just because of some BS load of rules that is designed to keep morons who can't think quickly or safely from killing us.

There's a small difference between not completely stopping at an empty intersection at 2 in the morning and sailing through a busy intersection two seconds after the lights have turned red at rush hour. If you're only risking your own life, up to you I suppose, but anyone else's, that's a no-no. Cameras help a stretched police force do their job at a time when resources are stretched then. Expand the program.

Exactly, but with cameras as-implemented, you get a ticket even if you are the only person in the city at the time. I don't see a point to the black and white of some things, I see that only as a mechanism for police to get $ and annoy the people they are supposedly protecting.

In the end I get it, most people really are morons, so you need all of the rules. But there should be levels of the driving test where some of us can qualify to make judgment calls that get past the BS.

  2. When I reply to two or more posts in the same thread, I can't figure out how to combine them into one post. I tried using the "multi-quote" buttons, but obviously too dumb to figure it out.

Can someone please explain to me how? Thanks

I hit multi-quote on as many posts as I want to reply to, then scroll to the bottom and hit the regular Add Reply button. Then they're both in the text box and you can do your business.

  3. I'm against them because I think all traffic violations should be subjective. If no one is coming, no one is around, and I turned right without completely stopping, then I didn't do anything wrong. I acted in a safe manner and made an adult decision. Same for stop signs and speeding. Just let me do what the hell I want, and if I drive like a jackass or cause an accident then give me a ticket.

  4. I haven't looked at rental agreement in a while, but I am confident that there is some language that covers change of ownership (since this is Texas I would also imagine it is very favorable to the landlord). I lived across the street from Allen House when it was bought and the people were out of there pretty quick.

As far as the condition of these apartments. I still question that they are in ill repair. I cycle by them daily and they are in better shape than several others on Heights blvd.

I'm not sure it had anything to do with change of ownership, more likely a term in the lease, but at Allen House they did tell people to be out before some of their leases were up. I'm sure there was a minimum notice # of days, but a friend of mine had to be out 3 months before his lease was up.

  5. Simple. If you got out more (beyond the places you pass every day), you might notice that Metro has a couple thousand "real" bus stops. They are adding more every year - 100 new ones in 2010.

Great, they are slowly improving. Meanwhile everyone I pass who is waiting for the bus has no shelter. Maybe it's because those stops/routes aren't heavily used.

  6. Question (maybe a dumb one): It's a "pedestrian" bridge, but can I ride my bike across it? Obviously this depends on landings, but those usually have ramps instead of steps. It's just kind of crazy getting down there with the kid trailer sometimes. Might be just as crazy trying to go down a ramp with it.

  7. Nope, don't live in the Heights, sorry. I was doing a college paper that involved Wal-Mart, and one of my sources was a Lisa Falkenberg column about how the Wal-Mart will be good for the area. In it, she points out that although it's controversial, and jokingly(?) mentioned she might get banned from her favorites Heights coffeehouse, but the residents of West End are much poorer than the Heights, don't really go to the same shops as the Heights, and technically isn't even in the Heights.

Doesn't the Heights end at I-10?

These days, yes it pretty much does. There aren't any remnants of the original neighborhood south of I-10, but the original did extend about to Washington. Not all of this development would be within the original boundaries.

For as democrat and free-will as my hood seems to be, there sure is a lot of NIMBY going on. I'm not sure I'm a Heights lifer. People just get too worked up over things that really don't matter.

  8. You are right. You could go on for days, but you would never find an example with a Walmart Supercenter.

Why stop there with the pointless retort, just say he'll never find an example with a Walmart Supercenter in the west end. It doesn't matter whether the example is Walmart or not, do you assume the city should have Walmart-specific policies, or do what they are doing and treat it the same as other developments around town?

  9. Seriously? you need to get out a bit more.

Why? Going somewhere else won't make better bus stops appear magically in the places I pass every day. I know they have better stops downtown and at transit centers, but that's pretty much the only place I've noticed them.

  10. Just noticed and read this entire thread for the first time. I look forward to trying this place out.

One note though.... Kraft Mac and Cheese rocks. Not that I've been to too many restaurants that offer Mac'n'Cheese - the occasional Lubys or BBQ joint... but I've never been to one that has Mac'n cheese even half as edible as your average Kraft from a box. They are always too goopy, chunky, overly cheesy... Maybe I'm in the minority thinking Kraft is at the top of the macaroni totem poll.

Still.. Look forward to trying this place out once they get settled.

Kraft is good, but only in the same way McDonald's is good. You've had it all your life, it's cheap, maybe reminds you of being a kid. It's definitely not top notch cuisine from a cheese or pasta standpoint. But hey, we still eat it. Especially when you toss a can of chili in there.

Still haven't gotten there...need to soon.

  11. www.beckett.com is the online guide to what many consider the best price guide for sports cards. However, a card is only worth what someone is willing to pay, so in that regard I often see things on eBay like 'Beckett priced at $35, buy now for only $7!'. Around 1990 was when the baseball card glut happened so generally speaking those aren't worth the cardboard their printed on. Ken Griffey Jr was rookied in 1989, but I think generally if you recognize the players name on your card then you might have something worth selling. The other 'commons' maybe not so much.

You're spot on there, that was when I was at the height of my collecting. I didn't go nuts, just 1 complete set and a bunch of packs from the circle K so I could get gum. But, my 1991 Topps set proved to be worth more to me as something to study than be worth anything $-wise. I remember looking at Beckett's a few years later, and the only card from that set worth $1 (and exactly that) was the Alex Fernandez rookie card. Amazing how I didn't get to turn my investment into millions. I still have that stuff somewhere...

  12. There used to be a big pothole on Heights southbound near 5th where you could see the bricks, I almost ate it there on the bike a couple times. I'd be fine with doing it in brick. People already drive slow as hell down Heights, it wouldn't have any impact. Weird how people constantly drive under the speed limit on Heights, but want to drag race down Yale.

  13. As an Aggie, I have little sympathy for LSU fans who constantly complain about their coach who consistently fields Top 25 teams and has won a national championship. He's obviously doing something right. Meanwhile, the Aggies just can't turn the corner. And you think your coaching situation is so terrible?

The guy can recruit, or someone on his staff can. He has also had 2 incredible defensive coordinators (Pelini and Chavis) that make him look really good when he really has nothing to do with that. It might come across as whining, but not if you actually watched our games. This past week is just the latest in a string of horrible game management under him. I've never felt so bad after both wins and losses, watching talented guys look so inept at times. The guy is borderline retarded in press conferences. The winning has happened in spite of him, not because of him. So much luck has fallen on us since he's been here, and while I'll take it, we're on our way to 3+ losses for the 3rd straight year which is a great way to get booted out of town. As for A&M, I can't say I've followed them much but they look really good this year. The biggest keys in college football are talent and depth, and while our coach is an idiot we've maintained those 2 things (except at QB, which is another story).
