  1. Do you really think so? Hasn't it been 40 years since Texas went for a Democratic candidate?
  2. MMJ deserves to get mentioned twice. I agree with you on the new Coldplay (and just bought tickets for the concert this morning). I'd also recommend the new Iron & Wine - The Shepard's Dog.
  3. You're absolutely right. They tried a regional concept called Disney Quest a few years ago and it failed miserably.
  4. I'm sure that fashion is a big part of it. Anyway, I attached a link on window glazing from the dept. of energy website that references color tinting. This is what I checked before I posted the original comment. Curious to hear from industry insiders... http://www.eere.energy.gov/consumer/your_h...m/mytopic=13410
  5. I think that this is related to the LEEDS certification that all the new buildings are gaining. Blue is very efficient for the amount of light it allows vs. the amount of heat that it allows.
  6. Somewhere along the line this turned into a classic rock thread. The Hold Steady is streaming their new album on their myspace page. I'd also recommend Band of Horses, the new Alejandro Escovado album, and My Morning Jacket.
  7. Specialty coffee is a tough market to get into right now. It's a luxury purchase that a lot of people are cutting back on in a tough economic climate. No stories for you, but here's a couple of rhetorical questions for you to consider. Starbucks owns the market - what is going to compel someone to purchase from you instead of them (atmosphere, convenience, quality?) Small businesses usually succeed by generating positive word of mouth. What steps are you taking to ensure that will happen? Does your location contribute to your specific differentiating factors? Also, people will generally only buy coffee from locations that are on the right side of the street on their commute. Does your location withstand that? Wholesale coffee prices are likely to be unstable for several months and you are likely to get impacted by rising prices. Are you going to be able to withstand price increases on your key commodities when your competitors are less likely to be impacted because of their size? Hopefully, you're opening in Katy. We need alternatives to Starbucks (not a big fan of Dunn Bros.) Best of luck.
  8. Don't you want to at least see sketches of this proposal before you pass judgement? Deyaar has a good reputation as far as using interesting architecture. I'll take an interesting building in Uptown over another boring box Downtown.
  9. Since I'm a caffeine-aholic, I've got several suggestions. Peet's Coffee - just opened their first Houston store (at Hobby Airport) a couple of months ago. Coffee Groundz - in Midtown and Sugarland. Caribou Coffee - I don't think that they have any locations in Texas yet. Good luck!
  10. I agree. HP should give a big boost to increasing convention traffic at the GRB which should (hopefully) justify the public financing of the site. I think that this is a big piece of the pie.
  11. I heard that a coffee shop is going into Villagio also, any truth?
  12. Shanghai's tallest buildings are in the Pudong district not their central business district and those areas are further apart than Uptown and Downtown are in Houston.
  13. I've spent a lot of time in Manhattan and I have to disagree. Houston is a very good restaurant city and is definitely one of the top cities in the country, but we don't have as many choices as Manhattan.
  14. Here's some updates on the Dubai dinosaur park - it's called Restless Planet. Scheduled to open in late 2008. http://www.albawaba.com/en/countries/UAE/229345 http://www.menareport.com/en/business/202687/ I would expect that Earthquest is going to use pretty much the same technology.
  15. Yes, but those numbers are skewed by business and convention travel as opposed to vacation travel. Don't get me wrong, I'm very pro-Houston and I agree that it would be nice to have more theme parks in the Houston area. I just think that the direction of this thread is based more on wishful thinking than reality. Snow Mountain (assuming it gets built) will get justified based on the population growth in the region and the void in the market, not because Houston is the next Orlando.
  16. I'm just saying that the weather comparison is pointless. Houston is not going to compete with Orlando anytime soon and it has nothing to do with weather. Besides if any city is going to have an amusement park cluster in Texas, San Antonio has a huge lead on Houston. Let's just accept these for what they are - assuming they get built. Nice regional attractions with minimal national draw.
  17. Sure, but the reason that you have a lot of attractions in Orlando has nothing to do with the weather being slightly better than Houston and everything to do with proximity to Disney World. Once Disney World was built, all the other parks were added because there was an automatic market of people that were going to spend three-four days at Disney and then look for something else to do while they were still in the area. Houston doesn't have that kind of a major tourist draw right now and that puts it at a disadvantage when it's competing for mid-size attractions like this.
  18. I know that this is slightly off topic, but does anyone know if they've actually started construction on the Dallas project? Their website says that they are planning to open Fall 09.
  19. Good to hear that Energy Tower III is still in the works also.
  20. I can appreciate your passion on this subject, but I think that its worth considering how similar projects have played out in other cities. Early on, I saw a lot of comparison between this project and Denver Pavilions. I have not been to that development, but based on what I see from their website it seems to be a reasonably similar project in its scope and tenants. Denver is considered to have built their downtown the right way and has the tourism and convention numbers to back it up. I would also compare this to the Metreon Center in San Francisco. I happen to think that center is completely underwhelming as a project, but it helped to revitalize SOMA. I agree that something of greater scope would have been desirable, but I still see this as a positive.
  21. I think that there is a good trend with the local chains that have come into Cinco during the last six months, such as Azzarelli's, Berryhill, and Mission Burrito. Much preferable to an Olive Garden, Chevy's or other national chains. What South Katy really needs an alternative to Starbucks!!
  22. Candelari's deep dish is close, but not quite. Doesn't seem like the right crust to me.
  23. Was that before they put the police dept. storefront in?
