Trust me--there is no smile on my face...only the sober knowledge that this is the second person that I've known well to have taken their own life in the RGV. As you can imagine, my opinion on this subject is unchanged.

My experiences with Corpus mostly have to do with high school field trips. Let me just say, when your high school class is over 90% Hispanic and you all go to Corpus, expect to see the monumental statue of Selena. There's just no avoiding it.
I also explicitly remember the lack of traffic. I think it's one of the least congested cities in the nation.
I'd probably appreciate it better if I had enough money to just hang out around town for a few months without necessarily doing anything.

You're more likely to get dragged behind a pickup in east Texas by white folk, than even be called "whitey" in the RGV. Usually people go on about these things because they hide some true racism. Unfortunately for the sons of the old south, Texas is now a minority majority state. So whether it be in the RGV or in Pasedena, learning to adapt means not being so sensitive when you get ignored. Maybe people just don't like you and your pop and it has nothing to do with your race. You should at least find some comfort in the fact that nobody is forcing you to visit, move, or even think about the RGV.
I'm guessing that you probably live in one of the new have/have-not demarcated subdivisions to be so far out-of-the-loop.You don't know anything about me. It's obvious that the neighborhoods I grew up in would make you cry.

I escaped from a racially-divided, have and have-not demarcated, traffic congested, and criminal infested city called Houston. I am now living comfortably in McAllen, a city with much to offer including professional jobs. These are my opinions. Take some advice. Stop saying things as matter-of-fact, and perhaps people will take a liking to you and your pop. For those who come down to the valley to conduct summer bible study or other charity endeavor, please be advised that we do not need to be saved from ourselves. We live comfortably. We work during the week and relax on the weekend. Such is life everywhere. If you go looking for bad people, you can find them. If you go looking for good people, you can also find them. This is not an exclusive phenomenon to the valley. Actually, in my opinion, I think a few other Texas cities have us beat.

[My figures were from this PBS Show. Honestly i dont know the truth but in the Texas State History Museum in downtown austin one of the movies there says Laredo is the fastest growning city so did that PBS show. i dont know

I participated in the 2003 Census check up and Austin's population to that date in the city was already at 835,000 or so. So the 600,000 population is from 1997. I remember that when I first moved here. The current metro population is 1,834,239. that is almost 2,000,000. In 20 Years it is gonna double to 4 million. Fort Worth isnt the fastest growing city. Laredo, Texas is with a population of 297,000 and ten years ago it was 176,000. Laredo's population is expected to be about 650,000 in 20 years. Austin is larger than El Paso and Fort Worth. and Austin is the 13th Largest City in the US.I think you meant that Laredo has a population of 197,000.

I'm sure he researched the annual crime report database before making his assumption also, just like you. Good work detective.

Looking at the current tracking for Rita, it appears that the storm is making a beeline for and along I-45 North. I've always heard that heavily congested freeways are "heat islands" that can actually affect weather patterns, i.e. rain patterns. I'm wondering if there's anyone talking out there about the possibility that the storm could be pulling towards I-45 and U.S. 59 because of that heat effect. All those people sitting in their cars out there on the roads could potentially be "sitting ducks" because of this.
Interesting. Freeways obviously reflect heat more than the earth around them. So it is possible that the rising warm air off a freeway could condense into water. However, despite the names and the personification given to hurricanes, they don't actually have the ability to make a conscious choice as to where they go. Hurricanes are steered by conditions in the upper-atmosphere and derive their power from sources of warm water. Not vice-versa.

Not gonna happen. Maybe for New Oreans, but not here, Houston and it's economy are just too big. Besides, Florida is always threatned with hurricanes, yet it's one of the fastest growing states.

If you believe we live in a politically correct world, then that some really thick foggy glasses you were. I'm glad we don't live a politically correct world. To me, Politically correctness hides truths and masks realities, no way to deal with problems.
So some people are greedy, but their question of are the businesses going to move here is no different than what happend in New York City after 9/11. Many offices are still on Long Island and in New Jersey since they lost office space in lowre Manhattan.
Prove me wrong then. Show me the racists with the "______ leave Houston" signs. You can't because it's a personal liability to be an overt racists.

Please don't throw around terms that don't have any backing.
I much rather read these posts of true feelings of a situation. These are valid concerns. They may not pan out at all, but these concerns will help us be more prepared.
I personally don't care about business relocation, increased population. I'm more concerned with how will deal with this influx of people that have no other place to turn too.
Why is Enron mentioned? What does that mean? It has nothing to do with the situation.
Also, you need to know what the term racists means before you throw it around too. Posters on this forum may be show prejudices, but hardly are being racist. Racism is a prejudice follow by actions against a race. I don't think people are actively going out and stoping these people from coming here.
Enron was the epitome of greed. If I need to explain the greed then you don't get it. And racism hides under the cloak of prejudice in a politically-correct world.

I wonder what will happen to all of the corprate headquarters in New Orleans. I was fliping the channels this morning and saw on CNBC that many of the businesses at the port are moving their operations to Houston.
You've got more people wanting to loot N.O. on this board than you have in N.O.
Don't get too excited. If businesses moved their operations to the port of Houston it would be temporary. There's a good reason why the port of South Louisiana is the busiest.

Little impact I would imagine. N.O.P.D. is basically non-operational. HPD, Harris Co. Sheriff, DPS, constables will be able to handle the influx.
