  1. Our Neighborhood Watch program is off the ground. Our HOA supports it, and we are officially sponsored by the Pearland Police Dept. We have set up monthly meetings at the rec center. Just wanted to share this to those of you who might be looking for a home on the south side of Houston, within easy commute of downtown or the med center, where the residents are taking an active role in their neighborhood security.
  2. On Wednesday of this week, landscaping crews began planting trees in the new medians between Kirby and Half Moon Bay/ST Drive.
  3. The street signs at Half Moon Bay/Southern Trails Drive are not correct. One of my neighbors reported this to the Pearland Street Dept, and they opened a work order to correct them.
  4. Has anybody else noticed how the 35 mph speed limit on this new stretch is routinely ignored? Considering the area is still a construction zone, with traffic fines doubled, you'd think people would slow down from the 50 mph+ speeds I am seeing all the time. I'm sure the Pearland PD will soon find this stretch of road a favorite place to rack up the revenue.
  5. I used to go here fairly often in the early 90s. Mostly to the theatre, but I also shopped at Oshman's (later Sports Authority) and the Builders Square. I once bought a dishwasher from an appliance store next to the theatre, but it's name escapes me. In my opinion, it was a misnomer to call this place a mall. I was more of a strip-mall. It looked like any other strip mall, and thus it had no special attraction, which could be why it failed.
  6. I talked with our HOA prez today, and the plans are moving forward to apply a uniform stain color to the common fencelines along the main streets and the borders of Southern Trails. Over the next couple of months, the fences will be powerwashed and then the stain will be sprayed on. The color is a combination mocha/rust that looks ok (there is a sample applied on a fence back in the new Sundown Glen section).
  7. The two new westbound lanes of 518 were opened to traffic yesterday. The traffic lights are not hooked up yet, but at least this is an improvement in the traffic flow.
  8. I was at the meeting last night (yeah I know I'm not a SCR resident, but what the heck). The statistic they announced was that in 2007 the Pearland PD responded to 2,500 calls from SCR. In 2008, they only responded to 2,250 calls from SCR. So from that decrease it's logical to state crime dropped (or is it?). As for the overall increase in crime in Pearland as a whole, I think it's exactly what you said - increased population. At the meeting, the police did not speculate on why the overall increase is occurring.
  9. There were about 80-100 SCR residents at the Crime Prevention meeting last night. A few other non-SCR people (like me) were there too. I wasn't able to tell if the attendees got what they needed out of the meeting, or not. Channel 13 aired a small segment about the meeting last night at 10pm.
  10. Just an update. It has been almost a year since move-in, and we still do not have cellphone disruptions. We love our tech shield. I guess there must be other variables involved in whether tech shield interrupts cellphone signals.
  11. The Pearland PD is having a meeting for SCR residents to discuss crime prevention. The meeting is Feb 23, 2009, at 6:30pm at the West Side event center. More info is available at this link.
  12. Great post about the current assessment of the situation in Galveston. Bravo!

  13. Maybe so, but I wouldn't rule out pure greed. For example, from my perspective they are getting ripped off, because SCR probably has 8-10 times more residents than my subdivision (ST), yet our HOA dues were not increased this year, even after all the money that AWH spent to repair Ike damage here.
  14. $815...wow. I guess I should quit grumbling about my $750 dues at ST. Good info about the land-clearing next to Half Moon Bay. Sorry to hear it isn't the school (yet).
  15. I took a driving tour through the new development going on in The Enclave section of Southern Trails. My interest was peaked when I got to Windward Bay Drive. They have made alot of progress there. It's going to be another nicely landscaped entrance into the Enclave, complete with extra-wide streets and cobblestone (like the other main entrance into ST at Half-Moon Bay. Should look really nice when completed, and that section of 518 opens.
  16. We have interest in a Community Watch program, and are attempting to organize one for ST. Just wanted to share that, since I'm sometimes pm'd by folks with an interest in ST, who have questions about this kind of stuff. Edited 02/25/2008: Still making good progress on the Neighborhood Watch program. HOA is now on board.
  17. I'm reviving this old thread since my question seems appropriate to it. I have a friend who lives in SCR (Meadow Trails East) and she said that this year her HOA dues had been increased to over $800 (somethign like $810, I believe). I just wanted to know if you other HAIF'ers who live in SCR can confirm this. If so, did your HOA say why they had to raise the dues? Repairs from Ike damage or something?
  18. I drove by the sign and actually saw a work crew out there, clearing land. I'm guessing it's being cleared for the entranceway. I still don't know if this means there is definitely going to be a Sedona Lakes or not, but something is underway...
  19. I've read the same posts she's put up about Aliana both here and at City-Data. She is sharing her opinion, and in a few cases she has backed up her posts with research. To my mind, she is not a troll. She is a participating member of these forums, voicing her opinions, just like the rest of us.
  20. For those interested, here's more info on the Mercedes Homes implosion.
  21. I took some photos of the water tower including this one, which I asked editor to add to the regional icons available for selection in our HAIF profiles.
  22. I noticed that the selection of Ashton Woods homes being built on the 60' lots at Sundown Glen had their start-up base prices reduced by $10-20K recently. This was confirmed to me today by an AW sales rep. This price reduction only occurred on the 60' homes, not the bigger ones.
  23. So there has been a second, seemingly unrelated, home invasion in Silverlake. Two within 4 days? See the story here.
  24. I guess some of you saw this story in the news? In my opinion, it makes a good case for having a diverse array of crime deterrents, such as a monitored home security system, deadbolts, and a firearm. I also got an email alert from the PPD last week, stating that home invasions where up in Pearland as compared to last year. Something like 13 had been reported so far in 2009. Everybody do what you can to stay safe!
  25. Ok, so they've broke ground on construction at the northwest corner of the intersection of 518 and Half Moon Bay. Based on the map Chamo found, this should be the new elementary school, right?
