  1. I was trading emails with some of my contacts, and realized something more to share about UTMB's grim situation. The media keeps citing 12,000 employes at UTMB, with the possibility of layoffs to 4000 of those people. What they have failed to report is that about 3500 of those jobs are in the TDCJ facilities around the state (UTMB does the payroll for much of TDCJ). So in reality, there are only about 8000 UTMB jobs on the island. It's fairly certain that 95% of the layoffs will affect the jobs on the island, so that means every other employee working at UTMB on Galveston island may lose their job. We can only imagine the impact (and ripple effect) to Galveston's recovery if 50% of the people making the commute to work at UTMB each weekday suddenly disappeared.
  2. It seems UTMB will get some emergency funding to make payroll for awhile. However, rumor has it that this funding is just a temporary measure, being done for political reasons, and as soon as the election is over early next month, the layoffs will still happen. I have some contacts there (I worked at UTMB until last year), and they are telling me how bleak it is. So much of the UTMB infrastructure has broken down, that there is just no way they can bring everyone back to work anytime soon. A sad reality.
  3. I was talking to a Pearland Police officer last night (he attended the NNO event on my street), and he said he thought the current detour on 518 between Kingsley and Southern Trails Drive would remain in effect for at least another week. So if he's right, it will be more like Oct. 15th that the detour ends and 518 is opened up again all the way to Kingsley. If he's wrong, we should see it open tomorrow (Oct. 8th).
  4. There is a banner hanging on the side of the new Red Lobster at the PTC, I believe it says the grand opening is going to be Oct. 13th.
  5. I saw the sign for Which Wich sandwich shop. It's sort of hidden behind Denny's. Has anyone tried it yet? Is it even open now?
  6. I'm glad they caught these low-lifes!
  7. Looks like the flag poles are now fixed! Faster than I was told.
  8. Some speculation I'm hearing is that Pearland ISD did this to help people in coastal communities that were hit hard by Hurricane Ike. Some of the schools there will be closed for a long time, and all those kids need to be placed somewhere for the remainder of this school year. Makes sense, but others can certainly take advantage too, like those folks on the Fort Bend side of SCR.
  9. The article at this next link could be very significant to those of you with kids, who live in west Pearland and are not crazy about the Alvin or Fort Bend ISD. http://www.hcnonline.com/articles/2008/09/...er_students.txt There are a few Pearland schools that won't allow transfer students (see list at bottom of the article), but I suspect that will go away in the years ahead.
  10. That's good to know, since that intersection will also connect into Southern Trails, over on the Enclave side.
  11. Ike caused considerable damage to the infrastructure at Southern Trails. Trees were overturned, fences were downed, and the flag poles at the entrance were knocked down. Ashton Woods has done a commendable job of recovery. Those trees which were saveable were uprighted by work crews in time to save them, and fences along the public steets are being repaired (and paid for by AW). I still don't know when (and even if) the flag poles will be repaired. I will pass on what I find out. As for home damage, it seems about 25% of the structures in ST had some type of roof damage. That includes everything from a few shingles gone (most common) to serious holes (only about 1 in 10). All things considered, we were very fortunate in ST. We ended up being on the 'weak' side of Ike's winds. Also, we only lost electricity there for about 21 hours. EDIT: According to my contact at AW, the two flag poles will be repaired. Work on that is supposed to begin in a week or so.
  12. Have any of you driven on Kingsley north of 2234 since Ike hit? I'm talking about where it narrows and becomes Old Alvin School Rd. There are still fallen trees blocking the southbound lane. I can't believe they haven't been cleared yet. Everybody be careful there, especially at night. This isn't really the right thread for this comment, but I didn't want to start a new one, for what I hope is a temporary road hazard.
  13. Many of you know that the current construction on west 518 has placed stop signs at the intersection of 518/Half Moon Bay/Southern Trails Drive. It occurred to me that stopping there is probably good practice for us, since eventually a stop light will go up at that intersection. (At least, that is what Ashton Woods told us at our HOA meeting last month.)
  14. Prior to Hurricane Ike, the Pearland Journal Online was publishing the Pearland police report every Wednesday. But since Sept. 10th, they haven't posted one. Too bad, because I was hoping to see the crime report for the area during the chaos of Ike. Well, maybe they will put out one this week, which will show more than just the prior week's activity.
  15. We made our first visit to Red Robin yesterday. It was good, we will definitely go back some time.
  16. Good to know. I do see the storm drains along the stretch of new road, and I can detect the slopes built into it to channel the water to them, I'm just worried there aren't enough of them. Hopefully, the rains of Ike were a good test.
  17. The old stretch of 518 between Half Moon Bay/ST Drive and Kirby has been closed. Traffic is now diverted to use the brand new stretch of 518 that was laid between those intersections. The new stretch of road seems nice, although I'm not sure of it's drainage. I didn't see a reassuring number of storm drains...
  18. Good point. Actually, Southern Trails is also the "hybrid"-type you describe. There is a line of poles running south along the east edge of our subdivision. I guess there was only minor damage to the above-ground entry points to our subdivision, that's why we had power restored so fast.
  19. I am in Southern Trails, a new MPC just south of Shadow Creek Ranch. We do have underground utilities. We only lost power for 21 hours during Ike.
  20. We tried Thai Cottage for the first time last Monday. It was OK, but we left feeling underwhelmed. The satay appetizer we had was quite disappointing. We prefer other Thai restaurants in the GHA more than this one, but on the other hand, this one is only 1 mile away from home. We could learn to like it more with that advantage.
  21. Yesterday was the first day since Ike hit that I saw normal construction recommence on this road work project. Hallelujah!
  22. It seems Royce used the diversion of Ike to shut their doors permanently. Article about it at this link.
  23. I got an email from the Pearland Towncenter website that says it will partially reopen today. I haven't been over there yet to assess the damage from Ike.
  24. Hurricane Ike put a huge dent in the southwestern side of the bottom of the 'bowl' of the water tank. It's visible from 518. No doubt that damage will push this project back for quite awhile.
  25. Just to clarify, the topmost photo that editor showed in the previous post was a new house still under construction. It wasn't a house stripped bare by the winds.
