  1. The Kroger has almost finished its gas station; it is already advertising fuel prices. It is positioned just a few hundred feet east of Buc-ees, very near Shadowcreek Parkway. I can only imagine the driving chaos along this stretch of the road if they don't put more traffic lights in here. Yet if they do, it's likely to become a bottleneck. Ah, we can't have everything, I guess.
  2. I don't think it suffered much damage from Ike, because everything that was open before Ike is open now, plus there have been many more grand openings.
  3. Ashton Woods is currently evaluating several different colors of wood stain, before making the final choice to use for all the border fence lines in the subdivision. So this staining project is still moving forward, albiet slowly.
  4. Well, as suspected, now that the election is over the powers-that-be wasted little time in confirming the layoffs at UTMB. Regents OK plan to cut 3,800 UTMB jobs EL PASO
  5. One of my coworkers who lives in Southfork told me today that Cervelle Homes, the other builder in Southfork, has purchased the empty lots from Royce. So the subdivision will continue to grow under Cervelle. EDIT: I meant to say Southfork, not Southgate. But it might be happening in Southgate too (it's nearby).
  6. Ashton Woods has renamed their Patio Homes section of ST to be Garden Estates. This section will NOT be gated; the gates in front are faux gates only.
  7. Hi lock, As far as we can tell, it's still doing well. We haven't been there since that one visit. Some of my neighbors say it can still be very crowded during peak dining times.
  8. We ate at Mimi's yesterday. We were happy with the service, food quality and prices. I was especially pleased with their breakfast menu, which they serve until 2pm. IMHO, Mimi's is the place if you want a step up from Denny's or IHOP. The nice thing is that Mimi's prices were comparable to IHOP's - not expensive like I had suspected. We also went to Dillard's and it looks nice. Looking forward to when that Gringo's opens...
  9. I got an email alert from the PTC today. Dillard's and Mimi's Cafe are now both open. Has anyone been to either yet? Also, there are some Halloween activities being held there tonight.
  10. The Pearland Journal has started posting the weekly crime reports again. I'm not noticing any new trends in the post-Ike environment, but there was a gap in the reporting of about 3 weeks directly following the hurricane.
  11. How can you be certain that this will definitely happen, and that it will affect the west side. Do you have inside information? Or are you speculating?
  12. The city of Pearland released their October 2008 progress report on this project. As expected, the damage from Ike will cause a delay, but they hint it is not going to be a big one.
  13. Here's a link to the article from the Pearland Journal, but I'll repost it below for archival here at HAIF. Pearland Considers FEMA Housing By NATALIE TORENTINOS Updated: 10.27.08 While Hurricane Ike is long gone, its aftermath continues to inconvenience local homeowners who soldier on despite flooding damage or damaged roofs, making their homes uninhabitable. To aide those in need, Pearland City Council members are considering a temporary housing program geared towards Ike victims through FEMA which could begin in a matter of weeks. Karyn Wolfe, a FEMA municipal community specialist, told Council members at their regular meeting Oct. 27 that three options are on the table: mobile home parks, private home sites and community sites on FEMA-leased land in the city. Trailers would measure 14 by 60 feet, and park models on private sites would measure 12 by 40 feet, Wolfe said. FEMA's time frame for housing is 18 months
  14. Good photos, thanks for sharing. I've driven by some of these before. I often wondered how many times they have been robbed, sitting so noticeably in rather remote locations. I would be curious to find out what kind of home security systems they had.
  15. Yes, that was my point. But not just about flooding; all other factors related to infrastructure should be considered. Sometimes houses cost more in certain areas without that cost being a tangible, measurable part of the house. For example, having better infrastructure (drainage, landscaping, amenities, etc.). That can seem like unnecessary & expensive fluff to some potential buyers, until something like Ike hits. I certainly saw the payoff, with good drainage and deep lakes to hold the rain.
  16. Dunno, noodlemonger. One of our neighbors just emailed to say a similar pile of poles is sitting further west, near the newly-rebuilt intersection of Kingsley Drive/Co. Rd. 48 and 518. It looks like they may erect that stoplight sometime soon too.
  17. A pile of metal poles has been delivered to the intersection of Half Moon Bay/Southern Trails Drive and 518. This looks suspiciously like the materials for the stop light we were told would be put in at that intersection. I hope this is what it is, because those stop signs are dangerous.
  18. Hi brer, I hear what you are saying. I'm sick of the argument too. I do have a question, though, about the taxes. Are you currently paying a MUD tax on the east side? Did you ever pay one there? We folks on the west side are certainly paying them. Mine is something like .84. So the argument could be made that we are paying higher taxes to support the development of our own infrastructure.
  19. Francisca Ortega at the Inside Pearland Blog has reported that the city of Pearland has hired a consulting agency to do a study of Pearland's growth, and the old "east side vs. west side" mindset is creeping in. I think this is a total waste of money at a time when the city should be reallocating funds to recover from Ike, but at least this problem (and its ramifications related to growth) is being discussed.
  20. Drive through City Park and look carefully at the street layout. Not only are the streets way too narrow, but they don't have adequate storm drainage. This all points to the possibility for serious flooding during heavy rains (which we get often). I would NOT recommend buying there to anyone. But to each their own.
  21. Thanks for contributing to HAIF with your roof repair experience!

  22. Keep up the great work at HAIF!

  23. I guess that has to be the northwest corner you are referring to, right?
  24. Today they stopped the detour and opened 518 all the way to Kingsley.
