  1. All these years later, I wonder if opinions have changed on this topic with all of the development that has happened in the area. I was just in the area admiring all of the new developments then I looked over and see a a train stretching across Westheimer. That really ruined the vibe, I don’t care what anyone says, the train needs to go. The 4th largest city in America deserves better then to have a small town train crossing that goes through one of its premier streets in one of its premier areas.

Just my opinion. Don’t hate me for speaking the truth. Come on Houston! Fix this!

  2. Houston needs to add a New Years Eve Celebration like it had in the past. I can remember the bands/performers in years past, the night art car show, the fireworks, the George R Brown light show and all the fun downtown. I also remember Gina Gaston and Tom Cook hosting and broadcasting from downtown for ABC13 with different reports throughout downtown reporting back all the fun. So who else agrees that Houston (the nations 4th largest city) needs to bring back a New Years Eve Celebration downtown. And it should have something uniquely Houston to drop for the countdown. So come on Mayor Sylvester Turner and other Houston leaders. Make this happen! Let ring in the new decade (2020) with a New Years Eve Celebration downtown again.

  3. My sister just signed a lease at this place. Upon pulling up we both cringed at the skirt as well, but once we got inside for the quick tour and saw the model rooms we were both impressed. The quality and detail is there. And oddly enough, it didn't feel cookie-cutter. Anyway, at 4 grand a month I still think it's absurd. But then again I'm cheap.

Is your sister single....and looking? LOL

  4. As we can see from some photos posted further up, Rice Village started 70 or more years ago.  Our metro area (that now has roughly 6,000,000 people) had fewer than 400,000 in 1940 - not a whole lot bigger than Bryan / College Station now.

Cars weren't as fast then, nor was the pace of life.  So one could pull off straight in parking on a street.

Never thought about it like that but you are right. Looking back at old movies from that time, you can see the difference in pace of life then and now.

  5. The worst think about rice village is walkability. No sidewalks to speak of, and all the darn cars crowding around everywhere. They need to get rid or reduce parking infron of the shops, and make huge walkable (maybe bricked) sidewaks, like downtown.

I agree! Too many cars in front of the buildings and it makes it hard to see the shops and it also makes it hard to see Rice Village as anything other than another suburban shopping center. The complete streets initiative I believe would make Rice Village much more desirable. People like easy parking, but that does not necessarily mean right in front of the building. If given a choice, I would choose to shop and eat in an area where I am able to people watch, (see people walking their dogs, window shopping, eating at sidewalk cafes...) versus a bland shopping center with the same exact shops and restaurants.
