  1. I love most everything they mention--and would be super excited if we got Crate & Barrel, a Harry & David, and a Sundance movie theater! That would be cool!! Everything else would be icing on the cake!

Don't know if anyone has noticed, but Town & Country Center has really been spiffing things up a bit!! Tons of huge date palms going up and parts of the parking lot have been redone. Guess they're getting ready for the competition!

  2. Does anyone have any pics of the old Peppermint Park? I loved that place! I remember going there for a birthday party, it was awesome!!!

    Moderator edit:

According to Wikipedia (user generated database, could be incorrect) Peppermint Park had several locations during its existence.

1958 located in the Sears parking lot, Pasadena, TX.
1963 located on the Gulf Freeway, near Gulfgate Shopping Center.
1972 located at 2701 North Loop West.
1979 located on Highway 59 at Beltway 8.
1986 located at 17164 Blackhawk Blvd. In Friendswoods, TX.

  3. Well, they're just a little too slow with introducing those "upscale products" 'cause when they took over, I never saw them! The old Randall's was run RIGHT and is what made them #1 in this market--the fact that Safeway bought them and they dropped to #4 should have told them something a long time ago.

A bit like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The old model worked....the Onstead family should have held on a little longer. I bet HEB would have bought them.

  4. I have to say this has been a long time coming. Six Flags has neglected Astroworld for a long time because they knew they'd have a hot property on their hands once the stadium and light rail were built.

When I heard the jacka*s CEO of Six Flags talk on TV about the closing I just shook my head and gave him the finger--especially when he said Six Flags wanted to maintain a presence here in Texas (Houston)...I nearly CHOKED.....I felt like saying, "Dumba*s, what do you think SIX FLAGS is for, you jerk?!" Hello!!!!! SIX FLAGS OVER TEXAS! Not Oklahoma and NOT New York City.... Idiot....

The stupid commercials for the past three years with the "fake" old man really turned me off.

It's really sad, but the Astroworld most of us knew and loved is LONG gone. :(

  5. They still have Applebee's here. I know they aren't the best places to eat, but I have to admit I love them! I am so excited that they are building one next to West Oaks (over on the JC Penney side), but I have to wonder why there, if the mall is basically self-destructing? I wonder if they are going to tear it down?

The Oriental Chicken Wrap-Up is my favorite, I get it every time! :)

    P.S. Thanks texasboy!! :D

  6. Panjo's Pizza at Town & Country

The Hot Biscuit in Humble, TX

    Farrell's in the Galleria

The Magic Pan in the Galleria

    El Fenix in the Galleria

TimmyChan's, I used to go to the Tumbleweed with my parents!! I loved it, because I got to dance with my dad a lot!!

That's all I can remember for now!

  7. On the topic of Town & Country, does anyone remember the original T&C? Way back in the late 60s I think it was, pre T&C mall. The concept was to have a bunch of small squares of stores with stores inside the square and parking around the perimeter. It was meant to be sort of a villagy sort of feel. In fact, it was actually called, Town & Country Village.

It didn't do well. And what I remember was that the reason it didn't do well was that people wanted to be in an air conditioned mall, not walking from store to store in the Houston heat.

Then they built the mall, finally. Why didn't it do well? I guessing proximity to Memorial City and no really attractive anchors to steal business away from MC.

And now they're going to tear down the mall and go back to the outdoor concept?? What a hoot. Maybe they just ought to face facts that the location is just not good for retail.

I disagree that the location is the problem.

Check Midway Companies' website. They have already torn down Town & Country mall (there's been a few discussions in this forum about it) and they have big plans for a new center.

Town & Country Village (the new one built in 1998) is going strong at almost 100% leased. It is a thriving shopping center. I live across the street from it, so I definitely know that to be true! :)

  8. I'm not sure it's that, Midtown, though in any other circumstance I'd be inclined to agree when it comes to Rick Perry. UH does not have a genetics or genomics program as far as I know--if they do it's small potatoes compared to UT's and A&M's. UT's affiliation with MD Anderson gets them an awful lot of clout. Not sure what A&M's program is other than cloning--and that's what Lexicon's claim to fame is--cloning knockout mice.

  9. Only "slightly more so"? Jeez! Talk about splitting hairs here. :P Memorial City is upscale, as far as suburban malls go, for all the reasons mentioned. It's a lot like Rice Village, and I consider that upscale. What you're talking about (The Galleria) to me isn't "upscale", it's couture (for the most part). At least, as couture as you can get without being in Paris.

The Target at Memorial City, while not a SuperTarget, is a lovely Target indeed. I know, because I shop there all the time. For the record, I spend plenty of time at Neiman-Marcus over here too (at T&C), so the snob factor is rendered pretty much moot. ;) May I say that I'd much rather shop at Target than Wal-Mart, but not so much due to product availability as the clientele our local Wal-Mart seems to serve. I guess that's where I actually am a snob. Or perhaps I just don't want to be killed when I go to my car.

I love Town & Country Village for two things: Restoration Hardware and Williams-Sonoma. I only know of one other location in Houston that has those stores, and that's Highland Village (someone please correct me if I am wrong). Yes, of course, the standard Gap Crap is there, and Starbucks (uh....where is there NOT a Starbucks? ) but with Harold Powell, Accessory Place, Chick, ZBead, Talbot's, and Chocolate Soup...well, they make Town & Country anything BUT an "ordinary" strip mall. The dining choices make it even more unique with Cafe Express, Escalante's, James Coney Island, Skeeter's, La Madeleine, Stone Mill Bakers, and even plain old ordinary TGI Friday's ;) .

    Just my observations! B)

  10. This is the exact reason why all the old majestic homes that used to line the streets of Westmoreland are mostly gone. I'm talking the homes that used to belong to the big Houston families. Unfortunately, they were just too old-fashioned and outdated and were razed.

You have to wonder what people are going to think of the old Hyatt or Four Seasons in another 70+ years. Will it be classic architecture to our grandchildren?

  11. You are right, they hit the spot!! But I sure hate having to go all the way to visit my relatives to get a fresh one (the microwave ones are okay in a pinch) when I am having a craving. My favorite hamburger in the world is my dad's--a super fat ground round patty on a lightly toasted Thomas' English Muffin. Cheese, mayo, mustard, fresh tomato and lettuce and sometimes a bit of onion. That is a seriously heavenly burger. Just a good old homemade one!!
