  1. The homeless seem to be getting more aggresive. Not only with they offer to watch your car while you go eat at say BW3, now they want to wash your windows with their "squeegee" and "water". Anytime I may venture into the CVS in midtown, there always seems to be a homeless person waiting outside. I even heard a woman who lived nearby in Post Midtown say that they follow her home sometimes. Has anyone else noticed these more aggressive variety?
  2. I am currently rotating through the following for best breakfast: Harry's Katz' Ziggy's Montrose Le Peep Baba Yega - Saturday Brunch (it's chepaer)
  3. I know that Meteor will do well. Even after the newness wears off, this will still be a fun place to go which is great as I live 4 bocks away.
  4. Well, I call it a VIP area. It is just a beaded enclosed area that is directly in front of the door. Originally there were flat panels screens above this sitting area. I predict this will definitely affect Guava.
  5. I had not heard of a shuttle service. Back when it was open, I used to walk the distance from SOBE to Meteor. Kinda crazy I know as it is not the safest. They are like a half mile apart. Yes it was Lukas Ridgeston of Bel Ami fame.
  6. Where is 307 Fairview? What building will it be in? A new wine bar will be great!
  7. Yeppers. I got an autographed picture with him. Very good looking in person. I was at a loss for words.
  8. Last weekend I was able to get a sneak preview of a (gay) community favorite lounge, Meteor. This former hotspot has been closed for going on 3 years I believe. I had heard that over a million dollars was spent on the renovation. It will definitely be the nicest club/lounge in the Montrose area. The interior has been gutted and remodeled with a natural feel. There is a lot of "Austin looking" limestone on the walls. They have added new leather couches with better lighting. They have added a DJ booth in the center of the club. Also, they have added a VIP area with silver beaded curtains in the very center of the club. I had heard that the patio will run several hundred thousand dollars when complete. In the back, a few pool tables have been added. I predict this will be a very popular club when it opens. Club opens September 20th. See you there!
  9. Fascinating. Love this Montrose history. I like hearing about the old hangouts.
  10. Count me too. I have a partner as well. He's very hot and a sweet guy as well.
  11. Is this not the location of the new fire station?
  12. I don't like it. I don't like the idea of a big ass library on that block. Am I crazy? I was excited by the proposed mixed use development. Midtown needs more residential and more retail. We already have a big library downtown. Midtown is still far from "critical mass' with people and things to do. A library is wrong for the superblock. What happened to Camden? Are they pulling out of the superblock?
  13. The new location will be at Fairview and Taft. The site was most recently the Portugese restaurant Leo du Mar, now closed. The information comes from Kevin, the owner of Ziggy's. I think this will be a fine addition to the neighborhood.
  14. I can't believe how the media is running his sick pictures and videos almost continuously. The killer, name left out on purpose, should be never mentioned by name. He wanted to become famous with those videos. I refuse to give him that glory. The victims were not allowed to make videos to say good bye before they were executed in cold blood. Let's remember the victims not the monster.
  15. North and South Blvd in West U area too. Hell, I would love to live there.
  16. I am not sure if this is a topic... but if we have an ugly streets topic, why should have a pretty streets topic. I will go first with my favorites: 1.) By far, my favorite is Main Street from Mecom fountain to the Medical Center (Rice area) 2.) Dallas Street from Montrose into downtown (feels like you are driving into Emerald City) 3.) Allen Parkway (Waugh to Taft) Nothing better on a chilly fall afternoon to zoom down this great drive with the windows down).
  17. I agree with TxDave. This building will dominate the skyline of Austin. Even the mighty Frost bank building looks diminutive in the renderings. The skyline should grow as a unit without the growth spurt of the Austonian. Austin derves a better building than this. Also, the other good point is what if the market bottom fallas out again. Did we not learn anything from the 80's?
  18. I just found this thread. It is very fascinating to me as I grew up in Brazoria but practically lived in Lake Jackson during my formative years of the 70's and 80's. Unfortunately, I went to high school in West Columbia (poorest school in the county) although I lived closer to Brazoswood HS. I always resented that. I loved the root bear stand in Freeport. I used to go to Quintana beach all the time. It was nicer than Bryan beach but not as expensive as Surfside. I saw many a movie at the old Lake I and II theaters in Lake Jackson. Does anyone remember the old drive in between Angleton and Freeport on the old 288? I saw 9 to 5 there back in the day. My dad worked for Dow for 30 years before retiring. He stills lives down in Brazoria. Ever time I visit it seems nothing ever changes. I love living in Houston but my roots are in the love it or hate it little area known as Brazosport.
  19. Growing up in Brazoria, I saw Lake Jackson through the boom of the early 90's when the Super Wal Mart was built. I think the boom is over.
  20. I attended the community feedback meeting where this idea was presented and almost unanimously turned down by all who attended. The primary reason Pride Houston gave for wanting to move the Pride events was to enhance the Pride Festival. They want to move the parade downtown and end with the festival in the same area as the International Festival. The general consensus was that a move would destroy the event (see Westheimer Street Festival) and more importantly forget the history that is inherent to the streets in Montrose. The major community leaders who have been around since the beginning were all against it. A move to a cooler month would loose its meaning as Pride commorates the Stonewall riots, the start of the gay rights movement. Yep, that's at the end of June. I love when the younger generation asks why the hell do we have the parade in June. The answer is always a history lesson. Pride Houston is the largest such event in the Southwest. I voted to leave it the hell alone.
  21. I managed to get ahold of a plan for the plot of land bounded by Bailey, West Webster, Gillette and cook streets. From what I understand this plan was universally disliked at the inital meeting. Have a look: http://www.bcbc.info/promos/park1.jpg
  22. District 7 Menu Here's the menu guys.... it's the same as the East location.
  23. Okay, so I finally went to what must be the fourth try for this location, the District 7 Grill. I had lunch there and I must say that it was pretty good. I had the District Burger with Swiss and Mushrooms. The kicker was the bread. It was amazing, crispy and slightly sweet. I am thinking that this incarnation of the grill might survive as it has other locations around town. I enjoyed the interior. It was not as small as I had imagined it would be. The booths are bright colors (turquoise and pink). Overall the service was friendly and prompt. Go check it out HAIFers!
  24. Question: Where was the 1913 Red Light District?
