  1. Looks like the Tapestry will be the next hotel to try and get Midland City Council approval.

Tapestry Hotel by Hilton to transform downtown Midland building (mrt.com)

"The proposed 93-room boutique hotel will be presented to the Midland City Council in the next couple months, according to a fact sheet provided by Al Escamilla of the Escamilla Media Group. The hotel still needs to receive approval and proper permits from the city.

The property owner of the proposed hotel is LSBrentway LLC, a local family with more than 25 years of business experience in West Texas, according to the fact sheet."

I actually will be heading out to this part of the state in a few weeks and am looking forward to seeing the new version of Centennial Park and a few other things in person.

  2. Houston’s autonomous vehicle scene in limbo as Cruise aims to relaunch ride-hailing service – Houston Public Media

"Last month, the company resumed manual tests in Phoenix after implementing new safety measures and shaking up leadership staff. The vehicles, which are currently being operated by drivers, are back on the road to create maps and gather road information in select cities.

“This work is done using human-driven vehicles without autonomous systems engaged, and is a critical step for validating our self-driving systems as we work towards returning to our driverless mission,” Tiffany Testo, a spokesperson for the company, told Houston Public Media. “Ultimately this will inform where we will resume driverless operations.”

Testo said the fleet’s potential to return to Houston is still undetermined while the company is first working to reintroduce the cars in Phoenix."

  3. 18 hours ago, Blue Dogs said:

Felicia Jeter was NOT popular with the viewers of CBS 11 KHOU-TV Houston ? What caused folks to become turned off by her ? 🤔

I don't think it was necessarily her, but the station just wasn't doing well in terms of its news product back then. KRIV's 7 O'clock News was pulling in more viewers than 11's 6 PM news and advertisers were paying more to advertise on the latter show due to that, from what I've read.

Everything I've seen of her anchoring from that time seems pretty decent. Good smooth/serious delivery, lighthearted when the moment calls for it. Decent balance. She had just come from CBS News' NightWatch overnight news program to anchor here.

Belo had also just bought the station and brought in Chip Moody from Dallas to be her co-anchor, but a fair amount of the time he was here, he was actually off air due to treatment for cancer.

I think it may have been a lack of consistency overall. Steve Smith was moved around after being one of the main anchors for a while, but later returned probably about the time they hired Marlene McClinton and Sylvan Rodriguez (RIP). Then there was this weird period where it seemed as if a few of the stations swapped people or randomly added people it seemed. KHOU hired Rick Sanchez. KPRC hired Terry Anzur - both co-anchoring single newscasts each, iirc. Ginger Casey (RIP) moved from KRIV to KHOU, Craig Weber moved from KHOU to KRIV, Melvin Epps moved from KHOU to KPRC, Dave Dickson went from KRIV to KPRC and I'm sure there were still others...

What I always thought was interesting is that they (IMO) didn't hit their rhythm until about 5 years after the purchase. WFAA had always been the crown jewel in the Belo group, but if you watch the clips of all of their stations from that time, KHOU consistently looks the most contemporary and up to date, especially when 1989 (that 5 year mark) hits and all of the pieces are in place for success. That, however, is another story.

"This time, however, the company, along with the Nature Conservancy of Texas, Texas Sea Grant and the Halili family of Pier 6 Seafood and Oyster House and the San Leon Oyster Festival, are working together to restore a public reef in the first ever private industry, public conservancy oyster partnership in Texas.

And unlike the private reefs, there will be no oyster harvesting at Rett Reef. Once the reef hopefully bounces back, it’ll be used solely for sport fishing and oyster habitat. "

  14. Houston developer Al Kashani to bring more filmmaking to Houston (houstonchronicle.com)

"The space, formerly the home of Suniland and Louis Shanks furniture stores, will be divided into two sections.

"We bought it, and we are going to re-purpose that. It is a huge facility, so in the front, we are going to do a home-improvement mall, which is going to be furniture, technology, everything that goes for the home," says Kashani, noting the cost of the renovation will run between $3 million and $4 million. "In the back, we have a 125,000-square-foot warehouse with 35-feet tall ceilings. So it's a perfect fit to put in soundstages.""

  15. Houston ends bus rapid transit with change to Metro's Silver Line (houstonchronicle.com)

"After confirming that changing buses from arriving at stations every 20 minutes, rather than the current rate of every 12 minutes, would not affect federal funding for the project, Metropolitan Transit Authority board members approved the reduction, along with other changes to bus service in the area. Bus routes are tweaked quarterly, based on current and expected changes in ridership.

The change in bus frequency will occur June 16."
