  1. There are blue LEDs, and they don't look bad to me, but no that's not what I was talking about. I was talking about lights being left on inside the condo units. For the last few weeks I've noticed lights on inside, which either means somebody forgot to turn them off, or there are people moving in already.

I also noticed they haven't painted the concrete on the front side, as in post #238 but they have painted the concrete towards the back as can be seen in post#334 (second image).

  2. The signal timing is funky on Hermann Drive going through San Jac and Fannin too.

Normally when there's a train passing it's red, but after the train passes it takes like 5 minutes before it turns green again, and then its only green long enough to go to the next block and then you get the second red light before you can make it to main. I emailed the city 3-1-1 thing and they said they're working on it...

  3. You sent me a video?

The KHOU link posted by sevfiv says that some people thought they saw a figure running, and others thought it was just a door closing. It sounds to me as if they are talking about one video, just different interpretations of the movement that is seen. And they are possibly talking about the same video that was posted here from YouTube where I think I see a door closing, which was also shown on TV.

I was trying to ask you if the video you saw on TV was the same video from YouTube showing the door closing, or if is this a different (newly released) video that shows a figure running. Or possibly a new video that shows both.

I want to know whether there is only one movement that has been interpreted in different ways, or if there are two different movements (a door closing and a figure running).

  4. The search and mystery surrounding the implosion of the Crowne Plaza in the Medical Center began after home video showed some sort of figure running inside the doomed structure.

Some thought that moving image was a door swinging shut during the implosion.

Does this mean that there wasn't a second video showing a figure running, but rather somebody thought the door closing somehow looked like a figure running?

  5. My dad says he saw this on the news back in Canada this morning. My family lives so close to the border that we pick up both Canadian and US TV channels with our antenna so it could have actually been news from Buffalo NY, but still, I'm surprised they are reporting on it so far away. Especially since there appears to be nothing new since last week when they thought they found something.

  6. I am pretty sure that Memorial Hermann Hospital and Museum District open on different sides and moving the bike from one side to the other is difficult if anybody is standing or sitting near the door. I bumped my bike into a lady last time I did it and she didn't look very happy. Also coming from Preston into the Museum District there is some point where the doors open on the opposite side. But let's not pick at the details of which side the doors open at which station. It's not really important.

All I'm saying is it would be nice to get my bike out of people's way when I am on the train. I get your point that it isn't a necessity to install racks, but it would sure be nice.

  7. It looks to me like that train in the photo has some special bike rack built into it, and it appears not to be a Houston train. That is why you've never seen anybody put their bike on the train in such a contorted manner.

I am a normal person and I just walk my bike on, but it usually gets in the way. Especially when the doors are opening on one side and I put my bike away from the doors and then the doors open on the other side. Even on the weekend the train seems to be crowded enough for my bike to get in the way. That's why some sort of rack like that could be nice. The bike would at least be away from the doors.

  8. Yeah that sounds like a good idea

Every time I try to bring my bike in the Metro Rail (even when it's not rush hour) it's still too crowded and I end up blocking one of the doors and its a big pain.

  9. There has to be a balance between the dirt and chaos of the real world and some sort of order and cleanliness, but anything which is relatively new will seem more clean than the old. It's not, as membag implies, that if something is clean and orderly and new that it is automatically artificial or 'Disney-like'.

I wonder if people once thought that the streets of NYC was were sort of disney-like imitation of Europe when the city was being built, but somehow because the city is old it now seems authentic.

Montreal has some pretty gritty parts, lots of graffiti, lots of homeless, dirty streets etc. Some of these undesirable elements are probably a greater problem than in Houston, simply because there are more people outside. But I don't think that if they cleaned the undesirable elements up that it would seem less authentic.

  10. Artificial or not, it's nice to see people outside walking around.

Somebody once told me that these types of developments where you have to walk around outside between stores and restaurants will never exist in Texas because of the heat/humidity/mosquitos. If that is the case, then what are all these people doing outside?

  11. I like to see these type of stores in urban settings because they can get pretty creative on their street presence and how they use their store fronts. Hopefully Houston's Downtown retail district is not confined to this area around the Pavilions. I would love to see how an H&M, Apple, or a Diesel would use those historic buildings with storefronts in the historic district near the Preston Station. The Byrd's Loft building has tons of potential for retail spaces like that and so does the space next door, if that hasn't been filled up yet. I haven't been paying attention.

I'm pretty sure most of those storefronts are still empty. :(

Actually an Apple store might not be that bad of an idea. The nearest one is in the Galleria and the other one is in a mall even farther away. Houston doesn't have any non-mall Apple stores (but I think Dallas and Austin do). And a downtown location would be convenient to all of the students at Rice, Baylor, UT, UH, UHD, Texas Women's Univeristy, etc (I know Rice and Baylor don't have on-campus computer stores, not sure about the others). Not to mention everybody else who lives closer to downtown than the Galleria.

  12. there are several places where you can see shows near the rail line currently. this is nothing new.

I guess it's just bad luck that none of them have ever hosted a show I wanted to see. There are some mega venues (Toyota Center and Minute Maid), and some small venues (bars), but nothing in between that I know of. I guess the music I listen to is too obscure to fill up Toyota, but draws a bigger crowd than will fit in most bars. Most of the shows I've been to have been at places like Warehouse Live.

How does HOB work. Do they have a restaurant like Hard Rock Cafe, and a separate area with a stage? Or is it all together? I wouldn't go there to buy a t-shirt or eat soul food, but I might go there to see Elvis Costello...

  13. Cool. Maybe "BACK IN BLACK" will play there. They're an AC/DC tribute band playing the HOB in Dallas. It's probably as good as the real thing.

I don't know much about the House of Blues (I don't think we have them in Canada), but I randomly came across this photo, which is apparently from a House of Blues. So by the looks of it, they have more than ACDC tribute bands. I consider the Maytals about as authentic as you can get, when it comes to old school Ska/Reggae. So yes, I am still glad there's going to be a concert venue on the Metro Rail that I can get to without driving.

And here's another musician playing at a House of blues that I consider authentic. It's a bit too expensive for me though.

Having a House of Blues doesn't sound too bad to me.
