  1. Hey Pumapayam your avatar is hilarious... my wife saw that show last night and thinks the guy has Asperger's disorder. She's more or less qualified to say so; though not a doctor she has been working with the MHMR population for a long time... here's info about Asperger's in case you don't know what the heck I'm talking about http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/aswhatisit.html really apropos of nothing, sorry...
  2. It was still like that in New Hampshire, where I grew up, into at least 1987 by my memory. When they changed it so you had to dial the whole seven digits, my dad had a conspiracy theory that it was so that we would be confused and more likely to dial a long distance number accidentally and thus pay more for the phone bill.
  3. Hmm, you're right, it kind of does. Well, it's in Houston.
  4. yeah!!! bring on the mosquitos already!
  5. this should be pretty easy I think. ID the doorway:
  6. Eh... gilded means covered with gold, or it can also mean as though covered with gold... doesn't mean that it's not gold per se. I think the gilded age is generally considered as having been called so because it was really more about style than substance (doesn't mean it was cheap by any means; have a look at some of the older buildings in Miami for instance). That being said, the ceiling at the Hyatt IS gilded regardless of whether it's covered in gold or something else that looks like gold, probably not just in the literal but also in that figurative sense. But saying so doesn't make your point
  7. I don't know how much mileage you'll get out of them, but you can look up owners-of-record on the HCAD web site at http://www.hcad.org/ Cheers, Stephen
  8. I always get a giggle out of the usage of that word around here... being from NH, bitter, to me, is 10 below or colder... That being said, I've grown soft... waiting for the bus in this stuff kills me now! I just have to remind myself that I've had to walk 5 miles in weather that was 65 degrees colder before.
  9. Thanks! I'll continue posting more as I scan in my negatives. Somehow I got a bee in my bonnet to digitize these... these are all from my work last semester at school... I'm taking photo 2 this semester so there should be more coming. I took photo in HS but that was like 12 yrs ago... I'm happy to be getting back into it, and it's nice to have an audience outside of my class and my family.
  10. These are unretouched scans of some negatives. No cropping, barely any cleaning, no contrast adjustment... all the same seems they mostly came out OK. This first one is from the corner of milam and rusk toward the esperson garage; the others are from the 12th floor of the chase center garage (601 travis) looking to the southeast, south, and east.
  11. not to confuse things at all, but that fleur-de-lis is also all over Canada (and parts of Louisiana), as it is a symbol strongly identified with France (and French Identity) as well.
  12. You're in the right county. If you need a hint, this is immediately across the street
  13. This is not in Harris county but in an adjoining county.
  14. Ah. Leica lens, 12x zoom. drool. Nice work.
  15. Well for starters, apparently they are replacing the chandeliers... j/k
  16. Thanks, I appreciate it. I have lots more negatives, but the prints really represent the "finished product" so to speak. The negatives have potential but really aren't quite "there" yet... I'll post more as I print more (or photoshop the negative scans... we'll see).
  17. I'm posting these for the public interest, and maybe a little to show off :-) all rights reserved. This is the fire escape of the highrise building in the 1000 block of Texas Ave, south side. I took it from 12th floor in the Chase Center garage with a long lens. The Esperson buildings from Milam and Rusk The Gulf/Chase Building at night, from the 1000 block of Jefferson St. The Sacred Heart church in Galveston from the Alley between Aves I and J A detail on the porch of the Bishop's Palace in Galveston
