Came across the William Stamps Farish II mansion.  I couldn't find an exact address but the photograph was taken in 1928.

Any help with this one? I'd assume somewhere in River Oaks or Memorial.  Maybe on Lazy Lane? Probably designed by John F. Staub?

    The mansion looks huge!

I think it really should have gone up N. Main in the first place. It should have always been the main way to get to WOMH (and a connection to the eastern Heights) but the awkward turn at Boundary preserved it as a drive-to spot.

The Red Line extension was built several years before WOMH came to be. It was more useful at the time to make the turn and then follow Fulton up to Northline.

@Ross @danielsonr my inclusion of Google Maps, Google Earth Views, and Street View images have zero to do with slow loading times. I mostly add those to the topics I create which load fine. Why? For starters, my topics aren't filled with 40+ posts per each page, therefore the page loads faster. And the few that are more than one page, there aren't a ton of photos posted throughout.

Again, following Editor increasing posts per page to 40+ a year or so ago, the pages load slowly. This isn't something only affecting me. Others have mentioned this too in various topics. The load time is also slow on subforums where there are 50 topics to a page. That too was changed in the last year or so. Unlike the topics, the subforums don't have photos. Still, even the subforums load slower than they use to. Editor increasing the number or topics shown to 50 affected the loading speed.

I frequent other forums that use the same software this forum uses. Many of those forums are image heavy (users post a lot of hot-linked and Imgur-hosted images on nearly every single page). And many of those forums, using the same software as this one, have much more traffic and members. However, the load time for those forums are much faster.

It's possible there could be other factors as to why those forums load faster than this one. However, from my observation, those forums usually have their forums set to show about 20 posts per page in a topic. Also, the number of topics shown in subforums are about the same. And those forums have more ads than this one. Still, they load much faster than this one that's set to 50 topics and posts per page.

On a different note, it's fine that you two don't care for what I choose to add to my posts. Guess what? I don't care for either of your posts or the posts you give likes to. So what? But there are other members and visitors who find the inclusion of maps, Google Earth images, Street View images, and parcel outlines helpful. That's what matters.

It's great that you know Houston so well that a single map (or maybe no map) is useful to you. But not everyone who visits this site is from Houston. Or if they do live in the city or nearby, it's possible there are neighborhoods that are unfamiliar to them. I'm a lifelong Houstonian. There are many parts of this city, suburbs included, I'm unfamiliar with. Seeing a zoomed in map view, while helpful, doesn't always give me an idea where a property or building is. But other views help. At the end of the day, that's one of the main driving forces of this site: helping others. That help comes by sharing information, offering insight, answering questions, or posting visuals (be it maps, real estate listings, buildings, or construction updates).

And I find it interesting that you, @Ross, have this weird issue with only me posting images hosted on Imgur. This is your second time mentioning this in a month.

It's also interesting that nowhere - in what I assume was your snide diss towards me - did you mention anyone's use of Imgur, especially your fanboy Highrise Tower. Even more interesting is you didn't make it a point to call out Hindesky or Cityliving. Unlike Hindesky, I don't constantly repost the same Imgur-hosted images of renderings and maps (which have different views or zoom levels) posted over and over again from the city's planning commission agenda. Yet, somehow my one-time inclusion of similar maps in each topic I create seems to grinds your gears. If my inclusion of different views of Google Maps and other maps irk you so much as it appears to do, then surely, Hindesky's constant posting of the same maps and renderings over and over again in the same topic must bother you? I suspect it doesn't for one reason: you don't like me. Your comments (and likes you give to others what a comment is made about me) make clear you some kind of problem with me for whatever reason.

Loading images from external sites like imgur is always going to be slower. That's the nature of the beast. You wanted input, I gave input.

I don't mind a single map with a link so others can choose the level of detail they want to see, if any. Posting multiple versions of the same map at different zoom levels wastes my time, my bandwidth, and is annoying. Same thing with pictures. Post a thumbnail with a link. That would be far kinder to folks whose mobile plans do not include unlimited data. I don't do forums on my phone, and have gigabit fiber at home, so speed isn't an issue for me.

Of course you'd disagree. That's to be expected. What else is new.

Still, there are other members who have made the same request throughout various topics in passing in the last year or so. Several have commented on the change in the number of posts per page which makes the entire page load slowly. It's even more so when there's a long page filled with numerous images be it large or small in size.

If you want the site to load faster, don't put in as many links to pictures you've saved on imgur. We also don't need multiple levels of zoom on the same image. Or multiple Google street view angles. That's what makes pages load slowly. Use links and give us the choice of looking at the pictures, rather than forcing us to look at them. Or put a thumbnail picture with a link to a larger picture.

I feel anytime I post in the Transportation forum, people are constantly using the sad emoji so I'm sorry to make this post as well...

It is now widely known that for all new bike infrastructure or road makeover projects, every single one of them are on hold and being reassessed if they are not already under construction, from the mayor's office directly.

The rumor mill is now saying that this project will likely be re-evaluated in the near future. There are too many residents in the area saying there is considerable traffic using W 8th (fewer on 10th) streets and that the traffic backups on 11th street aren't justifying the minimal bike lane usage.

Let me reiterate, this is just a rumor at this point.

That's the folks who forget that the 11th street project was not about bike lanes, that was just an extra bit that came about during the design phase.

They can take down those white pickets on 11th and leave the bike lanes.  11th street looks sloppy…like a construction zone except the orange barriers have been replaced with green.

Shepherd and Durham changes are permanent enough to continue until completed.

A “nice to have” would be adding a pedestrian island (or two) on Studewood ideally near White Oak and another near Woodland.

Nope, the pedestrian islands have to go, as they interfere with the ability of cars to get to their destination quickly. In fact, Studewood should be widened to two lanes each way by removing the unnecessary sidewalks on either side. If God meant for us to walk, he wouldn't have created the car. And, let's not forget that pedestrians are unAmerican commies. Walking is a sign you hate the glorious design of spread out suburbs.

For the sarcasm impaired, the above is sarcasm

What a backward decision and statement. "We want to improve safety on this street so we're going to remove everything that made the street safer for pedestrians and bicyclists and return it back to its hostile stroad environment. Dw, we'll study how to make it safer for pedestrians......not." I hope this doesn't set a precedent for projects like this.

I guess that means we will be looking at ripping out all of the changes on 11th, and a return to 50mph weaving across lanes. Followed by ripping out the new wide sidewalks on Shepherd and Durham to add the 4th lane back.

Just because it's true in this city doesn't make it right. You can't have a walkable neighborhood and then at the same time put businesses in a spot where they're almost completely dependent on drivers to supply their business. If you create an environment geared around people, then businesses don't have to worry about how much parking they have because access to their business for all neighborhood users will be evenly spread out. I'm not anti-car or driving but this city forces businesses to depend on car traffic to supply their bottom line. That's why other cities like Chicago and NY can thrive even in the middle of the office market collapsing. I'm not saying they don't have their problems as well but access for everyone, not just drivers, is important.

Andy's was in one of the most walkable parts of Houston, and still needed people in cars to succeed. That is not going to change anytime soon, changes will occur incrementally over time.

I completely understand the different variables that drive small business' out of their neighborhoods. I'm also aware of where Wolf Capital Partners is located. Regardless of how small the developer is they had no right not giving Andy's Cafe access to their adjacent section of alleyway just because they now owned the property. This wasn't solely about parking which was also an avoidable situation. I could care less how many small businesses' Wolf Capital Partners has leased to. It only takes one moment of bad business to ruin a reputation, and that goes for any type of business. At the end of the day Wolf Capital cares about their bottom line. So it makes sense why they leased to a chain. Making the excuse of "well small businesses' are just gonna have to leave because they can't afford it anymore" is a dumb argument. That's where community land trusts come in to play. Not sure what your allegiance to WCP's is, just as you listed, there are a ton of other developers who have done a better job considering the community and neighborhood they are building in. Let's also not act like there aren't a ton of developers building shitty strip malls in some of the densest parts of town for a quick buck.

Andy's was a terrible restaurant. We went there once on the recommendation of others and left after 20 minutes of not being seated or even talked to by the staff. The space was dirty and smelled bad. No great loss.

If you don't own your access or parking, you don't control your future.

  10. Are the developers going to dig up all the stuff that's buried under that property? Decades of brick waste, random trash, appliances, etc. That was one big reason it was never developed previously, according to a former colleague who lives nearby. If the trash isn't removed, will the developers disclose all of that to potential buyers?

I have no idea what's going on in that top photo/who that is, but... I hate it.

That's Bruce Forsyth, a former British TV presenter of game shows and such. He is most widely known for his work on Strictly Come Dancing, the show that Dancing With the Stars here was based on. He was actually pretty good, and I enjoyed the shows he did when we lived over there in the 7o's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Forsyth

Lot of memories in that Quad. That's where I taught my son to ride a bike, back in the Paleolithic era (circa mid 90s). Weekends, in the summer, it was empty. All those sidewalks were a perfect training ground for racing around. I look forward to seeing the finished Quad!

There was also an abandoned stadium in the corner near the Med Center (or it seemed empty). It had a long ramp from the ground up to the seating area. We'd pump like crazy to get to the top, and then race down the ramp at breakneck speeds.

That is now the Track and Field stadium.

Apparently this was across the street from Rice Institute back in the early 1900s. Appears to be a railroad track in the background, which would be the Westmoreland Railroad Company's Bellaire Line.

Gun clubs always have a unique land formation. The shooting positions are an unusual shape.  Kind of resembles a moon, or a half moon. Easy for spotting in old aerial photographs.

    VpENYH5.jpg

Those are trap shooting setups. The clay pigeons come out of the roundish structure near the left front of the picture(and the other ones) and fly semi-randomly. The shooters stand in one of the lanes marked by stripes. Better shooters stand near the back, others near the front.

@Urbannizer, you may be aware of this already, but if not, the conceptual rendering included in marketing materials is not the proposed mixed-use for 4000 N Shepherd Dr.

A reverse image search shows the rendering is for a mixed-use in Memphis.

It seems developers included the rendering to possibly provide investors with an idea of the development's design inspiration. Hopefully, an official design will be released later this year.

I have a Mohu Leaf. I also have cable and Amazon Prime Video. Unfortunately, if watching live sports is a priority, you're not going to get very far without either cable or one of the streaming services.

But it's always entertaining to see the reactions of people whose only frame of reference for OTA TV is fiddling with a pair of rabbit ears on grandma's old CRT set when they see the picture quality of modern digital OTA compared to cable.

I don't watch a lot of sports, and won't pay for cable to get more, although we did get originally Sling to watch Astros playoff games, and then kept it because it has channels my wife likes - Bravo, Food Network, etc.

I am still amazed at how good OTA quality can be, and we watch all of the Houston area broadcast channels OTA. Of course, the sub channels like 2.1, 2.2, etc are still 480, but that's not a big deal most of the time.

I watched most of the original Hawaii 5-0 on streaming at 1080. The remastered video was unreal in quality. That's one advantage of those shows originally being done on film.
