edit---is Kemper a typo?
I think so. I'm thinking of the Kempner family (Imperial Sugar, right?). Plus, Howard Barnstone did a Kempner house on Del Monte; probably the same family.
-
The University of Arkansas Special Collections have Stone's papers. Their curator tells me that they have two black & white photos of the house. I'll see what I can do about getting copies.

I've been trying to track that one down for a while. It evidently wasn't very opulent, not like the Dallas house. More like a ranch house.

It's kind of a BS term that Frank Lloyd Wright tried to coin for his architecture, although he never could define exactly what it was. Personally, I just use it because you can't really call what Goff or the others did Wrightian. I've heard organic expressionism used, but organic seems to work ok.
-
Don't forget all the Krakower/Greene stuff, Marty. That's organic as anything, what with Herb Greene being a Goff protege himself.
-
There's a book out by Lisa Germany named "Great Houses of Texas" that features the Durst-Gee house by Bruce Goff here in Houston. It also includes, amongst others, the Bass house by Paul Rudolph in...Dallas or Ft. Worth; can't remember which.

I believe you intended to identify the section "After you left, they took it apart"... and as you mentioned, it is indeed shocking. Something strange happened with respect to these properties as they most certainly are multi-million dollar examples.
You're right. I went stupid while posting...again. Chris mentions in an interview that there is at least one McMansion in place of one of these houses.

click on 'the mistake by the lake'
I stumbled across this today while looking for information on Paul Rudolph. It's shocking to see the condition some of these houses were in when they were destroyed. Some of them like you could have moved right in.

No, I disagree with these two. I want you to post everything you've got and go into as much detail as you feel comfortable doing. It will help people in the future who want to do what you're doing.
Just keep it in this ONE THREAD! That way these two can just skip it if they want...
Sorry I haven't been able to get out to that side of town. Maybe over Christmas vacation.

I'll agree with Willowisp too: if you keep it in this one thread, it won't be a problem. I TRY to keep my updates of the Wylie Vale thread limited to that one, because I know people are probably sick of it by now; if they're interested, they can read it. If not, they'll ignore it. I'm trying to be exacting and comprehensive, but I don't want to bog down the board either.
-
I have to echo domus' comments; I'm very happy that you've decided to restore this home, and to a certain extent that you've decided to document those efforts so thoroughly. However, it is getting a little old. Please don't take this as an insult or anything of that nature.
-
Yet another one up for sale; listing says 1941, but probably later than that. The current owner worked with Mr. Vale on an addition in the 1960's I believe.

I'm going to post everything that comes up for sale here instead of making a new thread from now on.

It's refreshing to see a house marketed for its architectural qualities.
The realtor was one of Bolton & Barnstone's clients. Her house was 307 W Friar Tuck.
-
-
Evidently, an early owner of the house was Dr. Warren Jacobs, who hired Bolton & Barnstone to do some rennovations around the time that they split up.
-
Stephen Fox said that at one point there were FOUR Wilson, Morris, Crain & Anderson houses in that neighborhood. I'm working on getting in there to have a look.
-
According to Stephen Fox, part of this house may have an addition by Bolton & Barnstone.

Has anyone wondered why the 2007 awards were never listed on the ghpa website? The Mosbacher house and Willowisps' house got awards that year.
