After seeing it for many years, I finally attended mass at Annunciation on February 3--a Novus Ordo mass, in fact. Before mass, a couple who married there in 1950 came back for photographs and renewal of their vows.
What a gem! Definitely a Nicholas Clayton design. It's a smaller space inside than it looks from the outside. I noticed none of the windows opened . I wonder if that was the case before air conditioning came along.
The adjacent Incarnate Word Academy looks relatively new. When was it rebuilt? Wasn't there a parish school in the same block?
Incarnate Word Academy rebuilt it's buildings in the late 1980's, after selling the Mother House Convent and adjacent former Marian High School campuses in Bellaire.

Isn't the reason that the homes removed east of Mykawa in Post #8 have more to do with the proposed extension of Spur 5? They have cleared homes north of 610 along the west side of the Santa Fe tracks, however most routes bring that proposed freeway over 610 west of the tracks which would be a reason to believe why most of those homes in your posted aerial have been removed.

This area's most famous abandoned neighborhood of course is Brownwood in Baytown. There have been several articles and research projects done on that one.

There are 12 townhomes and 16 homes on the north side of the 3700 and 3800 blocks of Gramercy St. that are located in the city of Southside Place.
Additionally, any children who would live at the new townhomes would be attending Mark Twain Elementary and Pershing Middle School which are located in the Braes Heights subdivision, city of Houston, which everyone south of Bellaire Blvd. uses. Supposedly, Twain Elementary is already overcrowded.
Traffic and safety issues also affect people in the neighborhood, as well as the extra burden to the utilities infrastructure of the entire area.
And so, the proposed townhome development does affect people who live on Gramercy St. as well as the rest of the neighborhood to the south of Southside.
I never knew that Southside Place included those homes on the north side of Grammercy. I learned something today!

They've done the ship channel tours since at least the mid-1980s, likely even longer.
Longer: I did in the 70's with a group of students.

Whole Foods sells a bunch of overpriced foods that spoils quickly. My sister brought a loaf of bread over to the house at christmas and by the next day it had stuff growing on it. yuk! (and yes she had just bought it). Let's build a bunch more of those places!

I got called for jury duty about 20 years ago.............a wrongful death suit agianst a hospital. I got picked and the trail lasted for 5 days. We found the claim unwarranted (Not Guilty). I have not been summoned since.

Why would Southside Place city planning commisioners be concerned about Braes Heights (Gramercy St.) residents concerns? Houston residents don't vote in South Place. Southside Place can do what ever Southside Place residents (voters) allow them to.

Subaru? Really? I don't think there are 30 Subaru's in Texas much less 30 in one parking lot!

Will they be able to sell alcohol since it's across the street from Incarnate Word Academy?

Jaclynn Smith's father, Jack Smith had a single chair dental practice on the 5th floor. The 6th floor and below had direct connections to Texas Commerce Bank and GBA (Gulf Building Annex). After Gulf Oil moved out in the early 80's, a major gut and remodal occured. We had to keep service going to this dental office during renovation which was inconveniently located right under a major pipe chase.
There were pictures of his daughter in the waiting room of course.

Of particular interest is the 1897 courthouse in Angleton. It was thrown up quickly. The county had just finished building a different courthouse building in Brazoria and the occupants had hardly unpacked when the voters approved the move of county seat to Angleton. The Brazoria couthouse stood neglected and seldom used except for small precinct functions. It was finally torn down and the land remained vacant and used primarily as picnic grounds for years.
This voter approval was a rouse used by Angleton leaders to get the county offices moved. The Angleton promotors promised the Alvin area residents that if they voted with them, they would initiate a petition to the state to create a break away county for Alvin to become the county seat of. The break away county would have included parts of Brazoria, Fort Bend and Galveston counties. The name for the proposed county was to have been Sealy County. This part of the plan never happened of course. Once Angleton got their court house they quickly forgot about their promise to Alvin.

I had an uncle that was a geologist for Conoco. He worked at all three of their Houston headquaters buildings, the one pictured above, the one on Main St.(the green colored building) and then the campus out on Katy Freeway. Too bad he has passed on. I'll bet he had some interesting stories about those places.
My sister worked for Conoco during the merger with Philips. She says that was the worst business decision that Conoco had ever made and that everybody at the Houston office regretted it. The Philips people came in from Oklahoma and within a couple of years bullied most of the good Conoco people out.

The city and/or TexDot should make Wamart fund the improvements to Wayside that are needed for traffic control.

Would some please one post a list of these "in" places, so I'll where not to go. Because if you're super cool you wouldn't be caught in a place that's on the cool list, so last month!

The last time I remember shipping containers being used for an alternative purpose was for a sign for a bulk soil, landscaping business on the Gulf Freeway. They stacked several containers on top of each other, with the top one having a former reference to Jesus Saves still visible. The stack of containers are still there, although the business signage was never painted or affixed to the containers. Another bit of freeway blight that seemd like a good idea to someone at the time, is now just a curious eyesore.

Thanks for sharing with us ML. There are a bunch of us here on HAIF that love to hear and share unique stories of growing up in Houston. Your father's home is one of those links to the recent past that only a select few people can appreciate.

This "fiscal cliff" talk and scare tactic is just is just another trick for politicians (on both sides) to fleece us. They make it sound so complicated and/or scary so that they have to "compromise" to save us (aka stuff their pockets with our money by buying each other out).
Okay, so are you saying they are writing checks to each other, or handing each other sacks of money? I don't get what you are implying.
If you are saying they are compromising so that they can secure money for NASA, the I-69 improvments, or say the IKE Dike, then they are doing what they are supposed to be doing.

Anybody remember Jack Brooks, the fiesty congressman from Beaumont? (dead today at 89) He was the figure standing behind Jackie in the famous November 22,1963 LBJ Air Force One swearing in photo. Most younger folks on this forum are too young to remember him, espicially during the Iran Conta hearings. He was a hoot! I'm sure Oliver North is glad he's gone. Old Jack tore his ass up and then down during questioning. He also brought home the pork to southeast Texas. NASA was in his district along with Galveston County for many years. He steared more approriations this way than all of the current Texas delagation combined. Does anyone miss this type of politician?

The 50 miles from home shot looks like the entrance to Robertson Pavilion at Hermann Hospital. It still exists, but is somewhat altered now.
However, I'm not betting the farm on it like Filio!

I think you are correct. If you look at the base of the columns on the Google view you can see that the bricks have been removed. Possibly the whole covering is new.

Your right, after I reread the article it stated that the animal would be destroyed so that it could be tested for rabies.

Target is a chick store. No tools, no hardware, no automotive, no garden shop, and no hunting or sporting goods! But if you want color coordinated bath mats, towels and soap dishes,Target is the place to go.
