A Charlie Brown Christmas is a classic.

I have noticed that homes bounded by West of Gessner, Memorial to the North, Beltway to East, I 10 to the South getting expensive as well. I walked through a new contruction for $890,000 of off Bennignus a few weeks ago. I never thought homes would be almost $900,000. There is a home at the end of our street that has been on the market for 6 months at $2 million and another just listed for $2.8. I was shocked to see homes listed at that amount. I was looking at home with my parents for fun a few weeks ago, and we were mentioning that we could not find a home for under a million we liked. I mean, a million dollars not even getting you a home you like?

? I guess.
I really like the design a lot. Anyone know what the area is like this will be in?
It is basically in the Park Cities. Nice area, good location. Highland Park shopping center just to the south, North Park is just a little to the northeast. Close to Houston's though.

As much as I don't like HEB ( It gives me the whole suburb flashback), I do love Central Market. If it's similar enough, I might give it a whirl. Does it have the same produce, bakery and meat aisle set up?
Actually, it was my first time in an HEB store that was not a Central Market. It is a nice store with a huge produce section.

The new HEB at Bunker Hill is great. I waited a few days for the crowds to die to no avail. I was surprised at how easy it was to park, get in, shop and check out. It looks very intimidating, but don't let that stop you. This is a great store that has a little bit (a lot) of everything.

Has anyone been to the Kroger at Echo Lane? It is really needing to be remodeled. After hurricane Ike, they had a sewage smell in the freezer section that stayed there for weeks.
Do any of you think that Kroger will remodel anytime soon now that HEB is open on Bunker Hill?
I live very close to it, but HEB now has my business unless Kroger makes any changes. I feel kind of bad though considering I've gone there for many years.
I think Kroger is on its last legs. I have not been to Kroger on Echo Lane in a long time. I would rather drive to Whole Foods or Randalls before I go in that store. It is just never really that clean nor does it have decent produce.

I drove to Austin over the weekend, using the I10/Hwy 71 route to get there. I'm always surprised at all the red lights you have to go through when you get near Austin. Why is it that there are bypasses around Sealy, Columbus, La Grange and Smithville, then when you get to Bastrop, it's one light after another?
It's almost as if the Austin area is thumbing it's nose at people coming over from Houston, the state's largest city. Surely Hwy 71 all the way into Austin deserves freeway status!
I took 290 home and it's even worse.
How do you not know it is Houston thumbing her nose?

Just heard that Toys R Us is going to be replaced with Specs. Will be very similiar to the downtown location. The current Specs will be razed once they have moved.
-
I grew up going to that Toys R' Us, it need a makeover or a new location. The shopping center in front of the Toys R' Us has been empty for a while now. I wonder if they will just tear it down and the toy store and put something else there.
I think they are going to bring that shopping center down. There has been some activity at the Toys R' Us in the past few days. I am fairly certain that it has been closed since Ike.
Also, from what I have heard, the owner of the hotel next door is looking to sell. He wants some sort of mixed use development for the site.

I know, I really wish they could have struck a deal to re-develop Fair Park and build a new stadium where the Cotton Bowl stands. Then mayor Laura Miller balked, thus Arlington ending up with the stadium and huge bill.
-
Sounds like the new Cowboy's stadium is going to be spectacular.

Does anyone actually think this thing is going to get off the ground in the next 18 months with the economy the way it is?
50/50
There was a good article in the Wall Street Journal today talking about the credit crunch. Projects that were to have been started have either been delayed or cancelled altogether.

Ron Stone and Steve Smith will always remind my of being a kid growing up in Houston. I remember when Channel 2 was actually a good station with good reporters. I am sorry, but they are such a sad channel today.

I really interesting read about Houston and the wildcatter Glenn McCarthy in Vanity Fair. It is excerpted from Bryan Burroughs upcoming book, The Big Rich: The Rise and Fall of the Greatest Texas Oil Fortunes.

Has Nordstrom's announced this store?
I think it was a joke. I did not find anything on the website under stores or future store openings.
I would think a Cheesecake Factory would be a great idea. There is plenty of disposable income in the general area, plus a busy location off of I-10 and Gessner.

I am all for underground lines and don't mind having to pay for them. Driving down Houston's streets and seeing ugly as@ billboards and power lines is tragic. Take them down and go underground.
-
I love Austin, but hate the idea of those buildings. It would just ruin the skyline.

Has been confirmed Ciro's is not coming down.

Yep. My hockey team needs a new sports/hangout bar to frequent after our league games. Mr. C's is done as of last weekend. Farewell, cheap drinks and awesome bar staff!
I heard it was Metro National (they're the owners of memorial city, right?) who was doing the demo/rebuild of that little shopping center that currently houses the aforementioned Mr. C's, La Fiesta, and Kobe.
Metro National owns pretty much everything along I-10 south from Bunker Hill to just past Gessner I believe. I have heard (rumors) they plan on a shopping center and townhomes.
-
Swamplot has the demo activity up for today, and almost all of it is at Bunker Hill & I-10:

How did you get that 3rd shot? That is pretty impressive from the parking lot.

I don't live in the Heights, but it is one of my favorite parts of the city. You are literally just a few minutes from downtown, yet at times it feels like you are in a small town. As with any large city, there will be areas that are better from others. You can cross the street and go from hood to high dollar.
I agree with the above posters as well. Take a few months and get to know the city. You might find that you prefer something other than the Heights.
