  1. Well, I thought it goes without saying that someone carrying should be proficient with their firearm. After all the thing won't ward off evil by itself.
  2. If more residents do, our neighborhood will improve even faster
  3. My wife and I don't sweat the crime enough to move, love the neighborhood, but do take precautions. We've had a friends' home burgled on this side of Main (East) and a friend of a friend robbed at gunpoint on the other side. So, better alarm system in the house, and carry a gun when we walk to dinner (small 9mm, so not much of an inconvenience). Pretty optimistic that the neighborhood will continue to improve with the rampant development.
  4. I hear ya. Did see Jude at the Continental Club last night though, great concert. One guy who can sing and a guitar.
  5. Don't forget Bank of America! Actually, there's a lit of them at http://www.houstonmidtown.com/midtown.cfm?a=cms,c,38,1 Bank of America Central Bank FirstCapital Bank Metro Bank PrimeWay Federal Credit Union Wells Fargo Bank Washington Mutual
  6. Sept. 11, 2006, 12:36AM Existing development rules clouding vision of pedestrian-friendly Midtown Obtaining variances for regulations focused on automobiles proves difficult By MIKE SNYDER Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle Like explorers hacking a path through the jungle, a small but determined group of developers, planners and civic leaders has struggled for 12 years to create a unique urban environment in Midtown......... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/4176842.html
  7. My wife and I toured around inside a month ago. The floorplans are very awkward and inefficient, and some materials are apartment grade. I wouldn't have paid more than $300k-320k for the square footage, appointments, and location. They would be a hard sell even in a strong market. :-(
  8. If anyone has the time or interest, the Midtown portion of WikiMapia could use more entries. I posted the link on Midtown's Wikipedia entry as well. http://www.wikimapia.org/#y=29742507&x...amp;l=0&m=a To update: use the toolbar in the top right corner WIKIMAPIA > ADD NEW PLACE. Then just box in something to label, click save, and describe it. WikiMapia seems like a great idea, has anyone used it before?
  9. I was (am) really hoping the hospital near Webster and LaBranch would be built. Seems it would have to contribute significantly to the area's revitalization.
  10. The signs for the physician-owned medical offices have been taken down. Also heard a rumor that this project has been cancelled. Anyone know what's happening?
  11. Does anyone know what is happening at Austin and Bremond? Until recently that small corner lot sported a commercial "for-sale" sign, it has since been removed.
  12. At least Randalls got their carts back.....
  13. The southern part of Midtown, around Elizabeth Baldwin Park is beginning to thrive. Once the Collective is built there should be more retail, and it's already a nice residential area (relatively).
  14. Anyone know the name of the recording studio with the Destiny's Child mural? Or who owns it?
  15. Has your research yielded any material for the wikipedia entry? I'd love to see the Midtown entry grow into a detailed, thorough, and accurate account of the neighborhood. BTW: VicMan/WhisperToMe has been making some nice contributions (a lot), thanks! An Arts & Entertainment section would be helpful. Any suggestions? I'm thinking... Houston Fire Museum (http://www.houstonfiremuseum.org/about.html) Houston Center for Contemporary Arts Lawndale Art Center (www.lawndaleartcenter.org) Midtown Art Center The Recording Studio w/ Destiny's Child's Mural??? ....
  16. It can and should be updated. I started by adding section headings and a couple of links last night. We should compile topics and content to post within this thread. Suggested Sections to Add: Entertainment Art Demographics Starbucks
  17. Tim Horton's has ventured into the US, but not very far south of Canada (even though American owned - by Wendy's).
  18. I may be the last to notice this, but there is a Midtown Houston page in Wikipedia. Good opportunity for us to help document the history, demographics, and current state of our neighborhood. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midtown_(Houston)
  19. Starbucks site selection process follows an 'Ant Trail' philosophy (that's what Starbucks calls it) where they'll build anywhere there's existing traffic. They'll build 2 across the street from each other if there is sufficient traffic on both sides of the street. Random Funny: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/28657
  20. I have always avoided Richmond for the cheesy clubs and especially the cheesy people. Downtown is perfectly safe. Although I prefer Midtown lately for the more chill bars/people and proximity to home. (might be getting old)
  21. I have stumbled wicked-drunk through midtown a couple of nights. It's tempting to over-consume when you can walk home (although it may not be safe...) P.S. Don't own a BMW, am white
  22. Ate there last Sunday afternoon. The staff is very inexperienced and a bit inattentive, but friendly. The onion rings are awesome, the BBQ burger is awesome (maybe b/c it has onion rings on it. The malts are pretty good. The fountain drinks were flat. I would go back, the service has to improve.
  23. Almost forgot... somebody went shopping in my garage for a bicycle! I'm looking forward to some density of a retail, and not transient, variety
  24. Will be - The Collective's shops, High Fashion Furniture, Camden's mixed use shops, development along Elgin.....
  25. I'm really excited about mixed-use space on the rail line, and the corresponding foot traffic it would receive from the apartments. Camden's property could further increase the light rail usage and heighten Midtown's attractiveness as a retail/entertainment destination. So I'm very much in favor of the development.
