  1. so i should take the "removal of greyhound station" off my Christmas wish list forever? dammit...are there no viable solutions that can be presented to the powers that be. if there was a singular problem styming midtown development, IMO this is it
  2. yep, cafeneo is a bit pricey for what it is...we eventually started walking all the way to Specs for their grill. it's superior i'm curious if there will be any decent choices in that crosspoint property developed across from high fashion
  3. come on midtowncoog, give us a few more details...you left me wanting more. did these guys get laid up in the hospital, cuffed, or did they get away? also, was your driveway that accessible from the street?
  4. whatever the case, as a midtown resident, i'm happy to see new developments pushing the frontier further east...i like seeing the Edge and I like seeing this la quinta... I hope it's a La Quinta Suites variation, but beggars can't be choosers.
  5. i guess they wanna compete against the downtowner inn
  6. i don't doubt that a lot of those folks have some mental issues...but why is it that you get all kinds of problems at the greyhound station, but not at the el expresso location right next to them? somebody explain that to me! if it's purely a mental health issue, why are the numbers so heavily swayed to one demographic? that doesn't make any sense to me. folks, i'm a minority, but i'll call it the way i see it. there's just a lot of punks and lazy ass folks that would rather beg/threaten others for money than to earn it the right way. if it was purely mental health, then it wouldn't be so unevenly distributed imo. and also, i'll say that all of our races/ethnicities have our bad apples. there is no one worse than the other. but here in midtown, we are exposed to a bunch of folks that are not all mentally ill...a lot of them are just trashy folks that called it quits on life and want to take an easy way out. and another thing: minority leaders need to stop playing the damn race card and start doing what's right for their own. those lousy SOB's (sharpton, jackson, etc) are all just trying to get rich while letting their own people dwell in the crapper and point the finger at white folks. it's not white folks anymore that are causing this. it's the lack of good minority role models and leaders getting back in the community and kicking some arse...and leading the right way. enough excuses. raise your damn kids right, or don't have them in the first place go ahead and flame me now
  7. i think a lot of folks are like me--value based shoppers. i don't see the extra value in shopping at the randalls relative to the increase in prices (substantial IMO). the location is much more convenient for me (or anyone coming hope off of I-45 or I-10) but i avoid this store because it's not a good value. i'd rather go to the krogers off montrose or gray. thanks for the info. i'd love to see an HEB in that location.
  8. yep, i often thought a little lunchtime shop would do well there just capitalizing on the HCC tenants or even another Vietnamese place...and still no takers. I just don't see the demand for walk up establishments right now. And this is coming from a guy that would walk the nine blocks to work everyday even through summer. I would be a proponent, but I know I'm in the minority. So no reason to picket CVS in my opinion. They're just doing business.
  9. seems to me that asking CVS to change their business model in this location is just ludicrous. If anything, those pictures just provide evidence that CVS does what is smart given a particular location and demographic. in this particular location, they are after the drive by traffic on Fannin and possibly Elgin. There really isn't much happening on Main. I used to work in that HCC building across the street from it. That building is the main source of foot traffic in the area come lunch time. Other than that, what good is the storefront facing the train? Zero and it make no business sense. it's unfortunate, but CVS moving in is a good thing for the area and a slap in the face to folks that want rapid change---it's not going to be urban Chicago overnight. Houstonians are more to blame for having crappy ordinances/codes on the books and also being too lazy to walk a few blocks for anything. CVS is only serving the masses with this design. Why blame them? it's the majority of Houstonians that PREFER and basically MANDATE drive up service.
  10. wow, another 30 units? with the ellie lofts, the terramark homes on chenevert, city scene II, etc. this area is really getting built out... i wonder if over-built is the more appropriate term. anybody feel strongly one way or the other? i'm interested b/c i live in this section.
  11. i live nearby and hate that area. question: if it's really this mentally disadvantaged folks, how come they down't spill out of the hispanic bus line? Why is it only that greyhound area? I just don't care for the excuses. the majority of the panhandlers and lowlifes are just that...deadbeat individuals making a choice to live that lifestyle. and I don't drive a porsche. I drive a 10year old ford truck. I still get harrassed at the occassional stop light and EVERY time I've gone inside to rent DVDs out of the redbox.
  12. couple of points since i just found this thread: a&m: thanks wendy for stepping up. not all aggies are your suburban stereotypes but thanks for the generalization. but i still understand the point and it's actually fairly accurate I suppose. alot of suburban kids come back to houston, do the "city" thing and then move on. it's probably true that they search for their comfort zone. however, i don't think that is the only demographic that supports a chilis in that location. i bet a fair amount of folks from ...dare i say... the heights would actually go to it as well. this is still texas and there is a heck of a lot more homogeneity here than some of you would care to admit target: when I was first looking for a townhouse inside the loop, i considered rice military area, and they mentioned that target. i couldn't even imagine how they would do it with all the industrial components still in existence. i was uncomfortable with living so close to a railroad track, so i walked away but I'm glad to see it took off. however, I'm pretty moderate on how i view it. I think while I would really like a modern feel and design, I can 1) understand the economics wouldn't really support them making such a large committment for the sake of goodwill and urban design (particularly when the city doesn't force their hand) and 2) any development is probably better than none. I dropped by it yesterday and it looks like a run of the mill target. i hadn't read this thread so i had no pre-conceived notions of it. Kinda ho hum if you ask me, but if it spurs development, great. Now, I'd LOVE to see that urban style of store (target/best buy/etc) in exchange for teh greyhound bus station on main. did i mention i ended up buying in midtown mattress irony: when i read that article about the guy that finally sold out his two houses, two things occurred to me. first, i would have set my chairs out on the porch and waved at all the new passersby --bartles and james esque. second, i thought he was delusional if he thought this would help his mattress business... and then, i see there is going to be a mattress store opening up? wow. guess i don't know the mattress biz afterall
  13. thanks for the tip Sonia. and when did you say you were going back
  14. well i went to the roof last week among other places. i'm there for 30 minutes and my buddies want to leave. so we do and I forget my freaking credit card. No big deal, i've done it many times before. problem is I check my account online (i had to leave for the weekend and didn't have a chance to collect it yet) and I have a $100+ tab .... yeah, I don't think so. watch out at the roof and no matter where you're at, don't ever forget your card. I'm hoping AMEX will take care of me though...I've never disputed an entertainment charge over a long, long history of partying on them.
