  2. This is pretty interesting, though I imagine it will change a lot before anything actually happens. If you go to the home page, then the "draft plan", then presentation number 4 (i.e. HERE), you'll see maps for proposed future land use and transportation. Most interesting to me are the proposed roads, including a very large outer loop around Bryan and College Station. There's still an annoying lack of higher-speed East-West roads, though it looks like Highway 21 might be upgraded to higher speed in the plan.

I'll try to go to one of the meetings, to see what more they have to say.

It looks like they are including College Station a lot better these days in their plan. I remember seeing the roadway plan a few years ago that had them turning University Dr E in a Northerly direction and connecting to Harvey Mitchel North. Essentially creating a loop ignoring College Station's existence.

  3. Here's something from another site about this area:

I received a letter from St. Joseph Regional Health Center yesterday stating that they are going to announce this week a new facility at the NW corner of Greens Prairie Road and Hwy 6. That would put it between 6 and 40. The letter references www.st-joseph.org and the Premier Health Destination link. Scheduled to start construction in fall of 2006 with completion in fall of 2007.
  4. President Robert Gates and other high-ranking A&M officials held two public forums to announce the university's plans to seek a $450 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security that would be used to build the 500,000-square-foot National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility on 30 acres.

Garry Adams, who is coordinating the project, said A&M has determined the site would be within a 110-acre area in Research Park at the corner of Harvey Mitchell Parkway South and Raymond Stotzer Parkway.

The university could face competition from as many as 18 other entities vying for the facility, but Gates said he thinks A&M's broad-based programs make College Station an optimum site.

After a final site is chosen, construction would likely begin about 2008 and take about four years, Adams speculated. Then it would take another year to commission the building, or ensure that it is redundantly safe and secure, Adams said.

If the facility is built in College Station, it would change the face of the university and the local economy, officials have said. Beyond the initial $450 million building project, the facility would employ some 300 federal workers, including many scientists who could potentially have dual appointments to also teach at A&M. Also, spin-off technologies would require additional facilities in the area, Adams said.

Gates, a former director of the CIA, said A&M could be at the center of creating vaccines, diagnostic tests and treatments against pathogens that could potentially harm the nation's food supply and threaten the national economy.

"This proposed federal research lab is envisioned as playing a critical role in the nation's defense against bioterrorism and emerging diseases," he said. "Securing such a facility would literally place Texas A&M in the vanguard for cutting-edge research and discovery and enhance the economic landscape for this community."

  5. wtf why are they painting university tower period? the concrete looks fine. if its painted it'll look tacky

I thought they were just cleaning it at first. It would be all white in one section one day, and then the next day it would be tan again. This orange confuses me though.

Why havn't they taken off the "University" part on this side yet? It's kinda strange.

  6. I can see many years from now Bryan High maybe moving into the Blinn Location, the old Bryan High Being torn down, and Blinn building a campus more like A&M and also becoming a 4 year college.

That is actually a good idea, and thus it won't happen. I was going to say Blinn is way to big for it to be doubled as a high school since we are comparing 10,000 students to 2,000 students, but it's actually comparing 10,000 college students that are there 15 hours a week (not factoring in the Ags that only take one class there) compared to a HS student that is there 32+ hours a week. With any additional space being used as office space for the school district it seems like a good fit. It would be nice to get rid of that horrible "two campuses in the same location" concept that Bryan HS has by destroying it.

Blinn becoming a 4 year college would help it's reputation and help retain all those college kids Bryan is loosing after year two when those students can't get into A&M. Why let them all go to SHSU or whereever when they could graduate here?

it has to be in the long run b/c A&M has more or less maxed out on enrollment yet countless students want to enjoy the lifestyle of this area.

I wonder at what rate A&M will grow in the future. A&M is not out of space to grow like it's brother in austin, so surely the student population will grow. Just looking at all the square footage of building space the Campus Master Plan shows makes you think that this University may see 10,000+ more students in 20 years.

  7. You know where I stand on the current use of the "muni" site but I guess I have to give Bryan city council members some credit. They did ask Briarcrest if they'd be willing to sell to the city and they did ask College Station if they'd like to participate in a joint course at University & Hwy 6 however both declined. I still think Bryan would've been far better off to just scrap the current course and sell the land. They could've even retained the land and leased it long term (as in 20 or more years) to a developer. I actually e-mailed the entire city council and the mayor with my feelings regarding this subject. Jason Bienski agreed with me and the mayor responded saying he'd keep what I had to say in mind when making his decision. Those were the only responses I received and apparently they had little bearing on the final vote.

Scotch, your idea about condos & retail surrounding the site at Hwy 6 & Rudder is great. Unfortunately, Bryan officials didn't see the opportunity in the area south of Muni enough to take a leap. They are forever limiting that area and enabling its decline. Watch, now College Station will develop the land as a course with no involvement with Bryan and we'll be left twiddling our thumbs as usual.

I'm really suprised College Station declined that offer to build a joint golf course at University and 6, expecially since CS doesn't have a Muni of it's own and they already invested so much money in that area.

  8. Wow, I was sure given the trend at Northgate that another bar would be locating in that location. Lets see that'll be the third stand alone Starbuck's in College Station not counting Barnes & Noble. There's a new coffee shop in Downtown Bryan serving Starbuck's products and there's proposed coffee shop to be located in a new building at the corner of Texas Ave & Villa Maria. That coffee shop is supposed to also offer Starbuck's products. Man, I need to start investing in Starbucks!

I wonder if they will keep the existing building or rebuild. I hope for the latter, but the way things go around here it seems more than likely they will just do a cheep renovation.

In reference to another thread, it would be nice if they started building it more upscale like this:

    bn_large.jpg.

  9. That is one of the reasons I was very glad that the city approved the TIF for the multi-acre development at Wm J Bryan & East Villa Maria. A lot of students travel to Bryan to attend Blinn and only view that part of town which has certainly slipped over the past few years. The impression we make on current students now will affect the economy of Bryan for years to come as the current students become former students, visiting former students and retirees. If they view the area around Blinn as a ghetto (believe it or not some suburban kids from such towns as Plano and Sugar Land wouldn't think twice about classifying that stretch of road that way) now they'll always think that way and refer to Bryan to others in that manner.

Why did they decide to build the college in such a "ghetto" area? A good idea would have been to build it where Bryan Muni is to revitalize that area and give "college ave" a bigger meaning. Could you imagine the change between TAMU to there not only on College Ave but on Welborn and the entire area inbetween.

I also wish it wasn't so community college looking and was developed more like Blinn at Brenhem.

  10. I agree with everything y'all said. That area needs redevelopment big time and that land should've been used as a big first step. As of right now you can't get Downtown from CS without going through some "ghetto" area, and that's a big problem.

A golf course on the floodplain at University-Rudder is a great idea. It would add a lot to the whole upscale business park idea they are going for over there.

  11. It is even likely that A&M will never have the largest stadium in the state because of what's happening on the 40 acres.
It's the biggest stadium in Texas right now.
You're calling your new redneck apartment village "THE WOODLANDS OF COLLEGE STATION?!

What is redneck about a $100 million project?

And by the way, it's not named after "The Woodlands, Texas", the company has properties all over the country that are called "The Woodlands of...".

  12. Don't get me started on my alma mater's spending priorities. Perhaps a world-class library should have been a tad bit higher on the list?

The Athletic Department funds are separate from the University's funds. This $12 million much needed scoreboard upgrade project will be paid for by the advertisements that will be displayed on the screens.

You should check out the $300 million in spending for academic buildings that we have going on right now as well and you will see where our priorities lie. Articles from this past Tuesday:
