  1. I've been frequenting the Metro "Town Hall" meetings and there are hoards of rail opponents speaking out against the rail down Richmond. I've written letters and spoken to many of the officials. A few have told me they just don't hear much from the supporters - if there are any. Do any of you support the rail on Richmond? If so, this is the time to write letters and speak up. Below is a list of people to contact: Mayor Bill White mayor@cityofhouston.net Jamie Brewster, Executive Director Upper Kirby District jamie@upperkirby.org Neartown Association ntaprez@hotmail.com John Culberson, U.S. Congressman http://culberson.house.gov/contactinfo.aspx Ada Edwards, City Council districtd@cityofhouston.net Anne Clutterbuck, City Council districtc@cityofhouston.net Pam Holm, City Council districtg@cityofhouston.net
  2. I don't know, do I really want to meet you guys in person?!!
  3. East End by the Maxwell House factory on Navigation. Also, around Houston Avenue just north of Washington. It's kinda sketchy but should get really hot.
  4. I really like the look of the buildings. This is great for Dallas! The pedestrian plaza could end up great or could be rather strange. I guess we'll have to see. 713 to 214, if you have more photos could you post them? I don't understand the whole connectivity aspect of the project. Is it all inward facing or does it connect to the 'hood?
  5. Yes to David Adjaye! Also: Paredes Pedrosa Alberto Kalach Shigeru Ban Close to home: lake/flato Mark Oberholzer
  6. I actually really like the building. It's got those beautiful horizontal Bauhaus-looking windows. The building is in desperate need of a makeover but it would be a shame to see it go. I guess we'll see soon enough.
  7. By the way, anyone know the status of the talks about tunneling I-45 under Buffalo Bayou? I assume TXDoT didn't go for it.
  8. Does anyone know of new or proposed shopping districts/mixed-use districts for fashion retail? I know someone who's looking to open a fashion boutique there and wants to drive around and look at areas this weekend. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
  9. this is what will replace Ruchi's. I'm just hoping Jamaica, Jamaica makes a come-back....
  10. Yes, there will be retail there and supposedly the design will be worthy of acclaim. Hines is developing the garage so it should be at least halfway decent.
  11. Spoken by a voice of true tolerance! With this attitude no wonder "us westerners" are so beloved by the rest of the world today...
  12. I agree that Houston needs a civic center. The Chronicle did an article on this a year or so ago (one of the better Chron pieces). They were searching for the city "center." Their conclusion was that we really didn't have one. I agree. There really aren't that many places that would work. However, there's one place I've always thought would be a great central plaza if designed right - the northeast corner of Main and Prairie. It has many of the aspects of a great plaza - restaurants and activity centers surrounding, easily accessible to transit, and a central location. I would love to see those parking lots paved with some nice stones or design elements. Then, when the Astros win the World Series we'd have an official place to watch the game then throw a party!
  13. Thanks pwright1. All this time I thought Jeff Rhodes brought Nordstrom into downtown Seattle in 1998 from outside the city center. So, it's more like Houston's Foley's in the respect that it has been there for generations?! That makes me feel better! Trying to lure Nordstrom to downtown Houston would be a miracle feat at this point in time.
  14. Both are going to be incredible. It's going to be a race to see who completes the first, large scale, urban mixed-use project first. It looks like Kirby/Westheimer and Houston Pavilions will be built first followed by Trademark and Boulevard Place. Our city is going through a rapid transformation over the next 3 years. Hopefully all this building won't be too gluttonous!
  15. Looks great pxright1! Seattle sure has an impressive downtown! Pacific Place really started the retail movement back downtown for Seattle. I think the Houston Pavilions (and Sakowitz) should be a similar, albeit smaller in scale, force here. What's really impressive to me is how they got Nordstrom to take a chance on an unproven downtown Seattle before any other notable retail was down there. The Pavilions will be more entertainment driven and might not be able to spark the fashion interest that Pacific Place did. We'll have to see.
  16. Is this THE B. Schultz? Are you the midtown guru that we've all grown to love?
  17. Thanks for the leads. I've looked at 4733 Dumble, but the seller isn't very motivated. He wants to wait until the summer to sell in order to get as many offers as possible. rps324 - lot looks pretty good. I'll PM you. danax - What official neighborhood is that lot on Ilex St in? Thanks so much everyone! Also looking for a site, maybe 7,000 - 15,000 SF for a small mixed use project in Montrose or Museum District. Here's an idea of what we're planning
  18. I'm looking for a lot to build a contemporary house and need some help. My favorite neighborhoods are Montrose, Eastwood and generally most neighborhoods in the East End, and the Museum District, but I'll look at anything inside the Loop. Anyone know of a potential lot that's the typical 5,000 sf that might be undervalued or otherwise really cool? And/or, anyone know of a ratty house that's dying to be recycled into a sustainable house? Thanks so much!
  19. I agree that an amusement park or otherwise Disney-style development will not do anything to help our city overcome its negative image. I think RedScare's comments about the linear bayou parks are right on. I would add to it and say that one significant, well placed piece of incredible architecture would do wonders for the city and its perception. Call it the "Bilbao Effect" or "Millimium Park Effect" or whatever. One large, exciting, breathtaking building could give the city the type of jolt it desperately needs. Here are some examples: Gehry's Bilbao Liebskind's Denver Art Museum Hadid Cincinnati Art Museum Schwartz Silver's LSU Museum, Baton Rouge Koolhass Seattle Library Morphosis Caltrans, Los Angeles
