  1. As far as the red line goes (since it seems to extend beyond the map), where will the northern terminus and the southern terminus be?
  2. Just passed by Sharpstown yesterday while picking up my laptop and I noticed part of the Macy's signage gone on the south side (sans the star). Not to mention getting ripped off at the $3.46/gal gas station further up 59 (one week after being ripped off at another one near Sharpstown).
  3. Ron left just as the Washington Post was taking over Channel 2, he already had left the 10pm news around the time they (KPRC) got rid of Geraldo. I recall Steve Smith's decision to leave 11 was sort of a personal decision; I recall watching 11 the night he made the call to retire. As far as Dave Ward goes, he's probably asking for a record in Guinness.
  4. Oddly enough, KUHF claims to be "Houston Public Radio" and even has an offshoot of the NPR logo bathed in red.
  5. I'm not necessarily for that; it would not be fair to Texans fans in The Woodlands. Just imagine how Big Blue fans up in Westchester and Fairfield feel about having to drive through Manhattan just to get to the Meadowlands, and the same goes for those Redskins fans in Northern Virginia who have to go past D.C. By contrast, the Cowboys' new digs will be front and center...in Arlington, right between D and FW. Nonetheless, a Sugar Land branch would geographically balance the appeal of HMNS. The question is, what exhibits would go into it (and I mean exhibits already not on display in The Woodlands just for the sake of exhibit balance and diversity).
  6. I have only been there twice...not worth going to. The Tinseltown theaters tend to be rather low-brow in nature. I tend towards AMC (First Colony 24 preferably) and Edwards, not to mention the arthouses (River Oaks, Angelika, etc). I also take up renting DVDs as well, and I have never been to one of those movie diners yet, though I have seen good reviews of them. And speaking of the controversial "damp seat", aren't they subject to inspection by the Health Department?
  7. Not to mention the fact that Valley View is just approximately 600 yards from the Dallas Galleria (underlined for emphasis).
  8. FilioScotia, you just about hit the spot. "Doc" is now retiring, having spent most of his years trying to do so (finding a replacement did prove difficult) although somebody has already reported it on here a few days ago... Of course Doc will continue to be around as a consultant once his formal retirement passes by. For now, his formal retirement date is unknown and supposedly he is trying to hang on until next hurricane season.
  9. I would have to agree with editor. BCS is in the Waco TV market, and their CBS affiliate is a semi-sister of the Waco CBS station. The same goes for Lufkin whose ABC is based off of the Tyler affiliate and Victoria which has its own ABC, Fox and NBC stations. The counties that comprise the Houston TV market: Austin Brazoria Calhoun Chambers Colorado Fort Bend Grimes Harris Jackson Liberty Matagorda Montgomery Polk San Jacinto Trinity Walker Waller Washington Wharton
  10. The good news, I saw it on YouTube well before this was posted. The bad news, I wasn't even around then. Of course, most of the big towers weren't even there, and what appears to be the Chase Tower was in the late stages of construction, as you could still see part of the skeleton on top. There had to be at least one or two more skeletons because many of the noticeable towers were built in the early-to-mid 80s. The "Apple II" had to be the Astrodome scoreboard, since Stone was boxed into a six-sided box based on the scoreboard's hexagonal shape. Of course the traffic scene and the cowboys do go well with the open since that is part of Houston's heritage in the latter and Houston's notoriety in the former. Yeah, the script lettering is cheap. 11 was on the cheap graphics-wise even as late as 1988. It was not until 1989 that finally caught up. The lettering for the Live at Five logo didn't last too long, either. On a 1984 clip I saw on YouTube, Fryer and Bob Boudreaux anchored and the logo became something like italic Avant Garde. Of course, what freeway was that in the very beginning of the video (where KTRK showed its "Instant Eye" chyron). I do not know why, but I heard through the grapevine of the Chron archives 11 did not do so well with Jeter and (Chip) Moody; legend has it 11 even trailed sitcoms on 20 and 26 when the two anchors were there. It wasn't until Dr. Neil Frank came in (along with Sylvan Rodriguez) and Post-Newsweek Stations started making KPRC more tabloid that KHOU caught up. And all in all, KTRK has held on to this day with KHOU inching in and even taking some of its audience at times, even though I just saw a recent KTRK ad where they dominate in news all day.
  11. You can point the blame on the few hypocrites around Clements and Kempner who think their spoiled brat kids deserve more attention than Willowridge when the bottom line is the Willowridge kids are only trying to improve their standing while the Clements kids get rich off their parents. Not all Clements kids are like this, I went to Dulles but I know there are many with ties to Dulles (and Clements) who would be more than willing to bump up Willowridge, which IMHO is the most underappreciated of the high schools. On top of that IMHO, 10% of stereotypical soccer moms would want to see more FBISD money go to Clements than Willowridge shouting "my kids deserve more than yours". Having your kids play youth soccer is supposed to be a personal sacrifice timewise and financially, not pork for the government to throw money away towards. I would have voted for the bond measure though because of the Sienna students who are divided in two between Elkins and Hightower. Sienna students apparently are feeling what the First Colony folks in the early 80s experienced before Clements popped up. Katy and Cy-Fair are known to build big schools (and facilities) that create a feel of overwhelming suburban sprawl, which is rather ridiculous because it takes focus away from students and gobbles up land (Cinco Ranch HS looks like a prison driving along the Grand, for example). Fort Bend (and Lamar Consolidated) on the other hand build smaller schools that create a more intimate, more personal feel. Also, Fort Bend as a whole: conserves land develops with respect to surroundings promotes ethnic diversity and tolerance has both a pro-business climate and a family-friendly environment has a sound transportation system that for now is a mess due to all the growth taking place in FBC, and wins awards for its enviable planning That is all just my opinion, btw. And real Fort Bend residents would focus on bipartisan issues, not bickering and squabbling. I am a conservative, btw, and I believe that true conservatives would never have blown up the deficit and focus on wedge issues such as abortion that are better left to the Texas Legislature (example: I vote to ban abortion in Austin, but I vote against banning abortion in Washington because it's a states' issue). More Reagan Republicans and WD-40s (a very rare breed of Democrat) would help. It sounds like a possibility, most likely in the northwest of the district, which is beginning to grow like weeds. But then again, FBISD is now practically boxed in...there is not much land left for development.
  12. Wouldn't surprise me. Channel 11 does a lot of different stories that are worth value, not the crime and junk stuff you see on other stations. I recall when our high school got bogged down for an all-night booze party my senior year, 11 was the only station that didn't air it, much like it almost never juiced about Ed Brandon in '89 (Steve Smith did a short segment and that was it, he left it to the courts where the story actually belonged).
  13. Yes it is, the map of potential school sites has HS #11 going in Sienna. Those kids desperately need a high school, they're so deeply divided and unhappy now.
  14. This doesn't surprise me about the sentence. Creative sentences such as making commercials on child abuse was Ted Poe's trademark. BTW, time will tell if Mattress Mac's high-end concept is working wonders. Any good business?
  15. Already on this forum, we have drawn comparisons between newscasts in regards to their material goods (graphics, sets, music) and political bias. Given those facts, why not focus on what a newscast is actually supposed to be about... the content...what topics are covered, what stories are told... the anchors...which anchors are the best suited at the job... the viewpoints...do the reports take both sides or choose one or the other? AND... the local relevance...do the stories covered have any meaning to Houston? In other words, who has, in your opinion, the best newscast in the nation's 10th-largest TV market?
  16. For TV, try this website: http://www.antennaweb.org. And when you get there, click on the "Choose an antenna" button. They will ask you a few questions (such as if there are any trees or tall buildings nearby). I did a study of available stations from Sugar Land and most of the transmitters came within 7 miles of where I am at, which is no surprise given that almost every TV station transmits from due east of Missouri City. No out of town stations, though, just a couple of LPTVs (K30CV and KHMV-LP for instance). I should also mention that in parts of Montgomery County, with a directional antenna, you would be able to get KBTX (CBS-Bryan/College Station).
  17. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if everyone did a story on double dipping, because HPD apparently is being mismanaged under the current chief. Remember the sanctuary law controversy that resulted from the shooting death of an HPD officer?
  18. Wouldn't surprise me. Cracker Barrel tends to put their locations on highly-traveled interstates and first-class non-interstates. Every Cracker Barrel that I have seen in my lifetime has been situated on an interstate.
  19. Could it be the "shell game" that Dolcefino did because of ambulances going elsewhere when something happens in their home turfs?
  20. That seems pretty much like Berry Center-lite to me if they're going to have a beach built out of a practice facility. Some other highlights of the bond: Clements HS: Athletic, restroom and HVAC replacements. Willowridge HS: Auditorium makeover, waiting area near the Boys' Gym, and an expanded police office. Many schools getting security enhancements (think video recorders, cameras and access doors). Most, if not all open concept elementary schools enclosing their classrooms (Briargate, Hunters Glen, Lantern Lane, Mission Bend, Mission Glen, Ridgegate, Sugar Mill so far) or at least finishing the job of enclosing them (Blue Ridge, Colony Bend, Highlands, Palmer, Pecan Grove, Settlers Way, Townewest).
  21. We only have one major daily because the Post dropped the ball on us just before the OKC bombing. It has been a one newspaper town since. And my family had been Post subscribers for years, we only rarely received the Chronicle until the Post shut down. That being said, what kind of bias did the Post have?
  22. The Chronicle has been attacked by the Harris GOP and Dan Patrick's army for strongly advocating light rail, giving to Planned Parenthood and smearing Tom DeLay. A reporter for the Chronicle pressured the pro-Bush family of a fallen Iraq War veteran for an anti-Bush quote that was published. Bill O'Reilly even unleashed his anger on the Chronicle. Even the Houston Press (yes the Press) critiqued them.
