My wife used to take lessons and do ceramic work at Mo-Lee's Ceramic Studio in the late 60's/early 70's. She turn this experience into a nice business when we later lived in New Jersey and California in the later 70's.

My wife remembers in the 1950's as a young girl going to a large ice house and watermelon stand on Alameda next to Herman Park. She would go there with her father, they would sit outside and she would get a large slice of cold watermelon and her father an ice-cold beer....those were simpler times!

I remember seeing "The Sound of Music" there in 1965.....it was at the Alabama for more than a year!

My wife took skating lessons from Ronnie Roberts in the late 50's when she was 10......

Went there a lot in the 60's to buy albums....those I heard on KFMK!

Boccaccio 2000 in Montrose (Lovett @ Taft), name derived from the Fellini movie "Boccaccio 70"

Used to love the Summer Platter (3 different tostadas).....here in Dallas, El Fenix has the same platter and it's called the Monterey!

The building at 5000 Calhoun is just a one-story structure.  The rink in the video at 2:29 looks a lot larger and appears to have second-story windows.  To me it doesn't look like it could be the same building.

The rink is the Polar Wave...it was just east of downtown.

It's also interesting to see the Alley Theater in the film when it was really in an "alley", on Milam across from Holy Rosary Church.

Cool.  It's easy to forget how revolutionary the Pennzoil building was when it was built.  This was one of the first non-box-shaped skyscrapers.

It was designed by Philip Johnson and built in 1975.....

The Egyptian theme (in the Majestic) was very popular in the 20's in movie theaters around the country due to the discovery of King Tut's tomb.

......also used to go to La Maison and Sand Mountain (folk music) in the mid-sixties.

The SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) ran a series of road races around the Astrodome in 1965...I still have the pictures somewhere.

No question, people did dress up more going out in the '60's and before. Things started to get progressively more casual in the '70's. For example, men wore coats and ties while traveling on airplanes.

JFK (who didn't wear hats) was also a big influence on business men no longer wearing hats as part of the "business uniform".

Saw the Astros there that year......in it's day, it was very "cool" and nothing like it anywhere else in the country!

I used to also get Wheel Burgers at the one on OST and huge drinks.....the Hub Burger was the small one and the hot dog was called the Spoke Dog.

Chuck Wagon did have good hamburgers, but I think the best Houston hamburger chain was Hamburgers by Gourmet!
