  1. Can you cite any examples of WalMart complying with local interests in such a way? Or will the Heights be the first instance? If so, lucky us!
  2. Edited by Joyce Carol Oates Published by Library of America, 2010 Retail:$35.00 Includes: The Lottery, The Haunting of Hill House, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Other Stories and Sketches Shirley Jackson is the author of one of the most famous (or infamous) short stories of the 20th century ("The Lottery".) There are few who compare with her deft handling of the short story; Mark Twain, Flannery O'Connor, James Thurber spring to mind. A recurrent theme in her stories is the anthropomorphic role of houses; they are not mere backgrounds, but are often the primary character. Her houses breathe, and brood, and often overwhelm the mere humans who occupy them. Hers are the Un-Perry Homes, with the patina of loving layers of demented generations. Readers fond of Poe (and I was practically weaned on him) will recognize a familiar theme. Those who admire Anne Rice will be exposed to a superior mind. Not all is eerie and gloomy; some of her stories are so laugh-out-loud funny that one should be cautious about reading them in public. The cost is steep; I got my copy from Amazon at just under $25. It's worth it. To pick up a book and open it, and immediately know that the binding and the paper are of the best quality...it's like putting on a well-made suit, or sitting down at a well-tuned piano. Miss Jackson deserves no less.
  3. I know... when I tried to open an account I was told:"I'm sorry, sir, we're not accepting new customers, because we've already reserved all of our parking spaces. Bank elsewhere." j/k Seriously, that bank must have darn few customers or one enormous parking lot.
  4. This past weekend COPS broadcast two incidents filmed in Houston. The first was a traffic stop (W Dallas - Taft area) in which a motorist had been observed buying drugs nearby. The second was also a drug bust, Spur 527 at W Alabama (Skylane Apartments) - just two blocks from da Mayor's house. There's a couple of nice, if typical, ariel shots of downtown. "Cops" Season 22 Ep:32 can be viewed at Hulu.com
  5. You're preaching to a largely deaf choir. I've tried to explain to the locals, with little success. They're incapable of learning.
  6. Stop signs on every block? Then. Maybe. You. Shouldn't. Regard. This. As. A. Through. Street.
  7. At last, I've accomplished something. This motto shall be my epitaph: "He coined the term Big Head On Main Street"
  8. Absolutely. It was a dreary, mustard yellow eyesore. Amazing, how a paint job can reveal the architecture lurking beneath. Another example would be the former Houston Sign Company (1200 Westheimer - now Slick Willie's) which used to be camouflaged under an icky coating of black paint.
  9. sevfiv could teach freon a thing or two about cool

  10. Please bear in mind that a traffic light can influence traffic at more than one intersection. Interrupting the flow of traffic on a major artery creates gaps which allow passage at other intersections, sometimes blocks away.
  11. No, I've seen it in real life, and I'll pass on the offer of looking at it again. It would make a wonderful board game piece, if shrunken sufficiently.

Not they. Him. His name is Richard Lawrence, and noblesoul.com is his exclusive property. Also, he has a financial interest in preserving Ms Rand's alleged good name. You really need to not trust everything you read on the internet. I've wasted enough time on Ms Rand for one lifetime. Goodbye.

Your intellectually honest source is the Objectivism Resource Center i.e. the Ayn Rand Fan Club? LOL!
  14. And still you're hectoring her!? Stop it! You can make your point without picking fights

The reason being, she was an amphetamine addict. This is not an ad hominem attack, it's a matter of record. Her books have 'speed freak' written all over them.
  16. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. link (Well, you asked...)
  17. Any word on which media are refusing to run this ad? Let's prank 'em.
  18. If the majority of houses on a block are Craftsman Bungalows, a pseudo-Victorian will look as appropriate as a wristwatch on a Greek statue. Anachronisms are unintentionally funny at best, and the humor is at the expense of the ignorance of others. With few exceptions, attempts to re-introduce Victorian (or worse, New Orleans) elements into the Heights have resulted in Mattel-like structures. The appeal of the Heights will not be enhanced by the odd, inappropriate infill of Victorians- nor log cabins, igloos, tepees or pagodas.
  19. Many HAIF regulars are dismayed to hear this. We have built up a great deal of respect and admiration for your house and your dog. Speaking of which, I expect you to throw a hissy-fit over the leash law in Houston (even though it has had no effect on you, being a good pet owner.) To show your displeasure over others trying to control your property, perhaps you should threaten to sell your dog to a Korean restaurant. "I'm gonna kill my dog! And it's all...Your...FAULT!"
  20. Oops. You are, of course, correct. Thanks for the additional info.
  21. Checking the residential properties against the Houston city directory for 1922 yields... not much. Unfortunately, the brochure lacks a publication date, so I'm unsure which of these residences would have been completed in time to be included in the directory. Here's what I've found so far: Residence of Wm. Ward Watkin (2) Listed at 5009 Caroline. According to Google Street, that places it squarely in the middle of the Southwest Freeway. We'll assume it's demolished. Residence of F. A. Heitman (2)'Heitmann' listed at 3910 Garrott St. Site currently occupied by 1970s townhomes. Residence of H. C. Weiss No listing found. Residence of Dr. E. M. Armstrong (3) Listed at Burlington Apts (2116-20 Fannin) Residence of Howard Hughes Listed at 3921 Yoakum - still standing and part of University of St. Thomas campus. Residence of E. W. Gruendler Listed at 1100 Milam -site of Centerpoint Energy Plaza Residence of J. Virgil Scott Listed at Garden Court Apartments (2204 Fannin) Residence of John G. Logue Listed at 219 Hathaway Av. (now Westheimer) Residence of M. L. Hurwitz (Max L. Hurvitz) Listed at 509 Hathaway Av. Residence of W. A. Priddie No listing found Residence of N. T. Masterson (2) (Neill T. Masterson) Listed at 3918 Day In other words, the only one found was the Howard Hughes house - which we all knew about anyway. Unfortunately, the 1922 city directory is the most recent available online, and the only addresses which seem likely are Watkin's and Hughes's.
  22. I thought your review was useful, funny and cool. Too bad Spring isn't more METRO accessible - this restaurant sounds like a nice place.
  23. But wait! - there's more! From the most recent TXMPA mailing: It's been a year and a month since the new Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program was enacted and, in case you haven't heard, our Texas TV industry achieved particularly stunning success this month because of it. An unprecedented five primetime network TV series will now shoot in Texas this summer, spanning three out of four broadcast networks - THE GOOD GUYS and LONESTAR (FOX), CHASE and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (NBC), and MY GENERATION (ABC) - bringing thousands of jobs for Texans and millions of dollars of spending to our state. In addition, we may be getting a sixth series, as it looks like CHAOS (CBS) may come shoot here this fall as well. (Stay tuned!) [emphasis added] Let's hope Houston gets a piece of the pie. At least a sliver.
  24. My apologies. I thought it was a comedy, not a documentary.
  25. Let's hope that the right-wing wackos don't poison future deals. They're already going ballistic on Paul Rodriguez's latest, Machete, claiming that what appears to be a comedy is intended to incite race wars. Seriously. I received an email from the president of TXMPA, which read in part: We urge everyone to visit www.txmpa.org to learn more about the Texas incentive program. An informed public is less likely to be swayed by misinformation and false allegations such as those currently swirling around the film "Machete.” Please note, this film has yet to submit all of its financial and content material for audit and review. Again, no incentive can be approved and funded until these steps take place. In the upcoming 2011 Legislative Session, TXMPA will advocate for the continued funding of the Texas Moving Image Incentive Program. The program has made a positive economic impact across the State in both rural areas and large cities. Currently, as a direct result of the incentive program, five network television series are committed to produce shows in Texas along with numerous cable series, feature films, video games, and commercials. We encourage you to take a moment to contact your legislators (or candidates for the Legislature) and let them know you support our program because of the jobs and revenue it brings to our State. Also, please become a member of TXMPA and join us in our efforts to continue this program. www.txmpa.org join/donate/sponsor
