  1. 12 miles, 25 minutes, from Cinco Ranch to Westchase District (Westheimer and Wilcrest area) due East and West on Westheimer and Westheimer Parkway.

I am usually getting on the road about 7:10 and heading home about 4:45 on average.

  2. Good point. Any other reasons you can think of to buy used? We're considering moving and unsure whether to buy used or new. I do like being able to see what the completed neighborhood looks like. But many of the used homes we've looked I've found kind of icky...besides featuring other people's decorating choices, they sometimes have weird smells or pet odors, and usually the floors and walls are anywhere from slightly to very beat up. Any thoughts from others who have deliberated this choice?

Well you also have the mature landscape look, the security of knowing how your neighbors will keep up there house and yard (this is a big one), any upgrades the previous owners may have done (ie., sprinkler systems, decks, french drains, workbench, etc.), you can also evaluate traffic patterns on an existing neighborhood and see if they are acceptable, I am sure there are more.

We bought a house that was 5 years old rather than new development 7 minutes away in Cinco Ranch. While saving $20,000 off the selling price, we also got extras and location we like better. Of course you may have to put in more leg work (or internet searching) to find one that meets your requirements. I like the idea, personally of buying a house that is no older than 5-7 yrs old (if you are considering this versus a new home) so that the house you are buying is resonabily up to code and has the current technolgy you want for your house to be efficient energy wise (radiant barriers, double pane windows, etc.) and safe (double fault breakers, alarm system, double fault breakers, gfi outlets, etc.)

  3. I can't speak for anyone else but during the week I drive a crewcab(4 door) Ford pickup(5.3 liter v8). It gets about 14.5 in the city and around 16 on the highway(average). My commute is only 24 miles round trip though. My wife is now a stay at home mom, so as far as gas and toll comsumption that has helped. On the weekends we have started driving the ford explorer(4.0 liter V6) which gets about 17 in the city and 21 on the highway. I drove to Beumont this past weekend with my father in law in the front seat and he encouraged me to keep it at 65 mph(about 2000 rpms on the explorer) I was definately in the minority but what did I do? Add 10 minutes to my travel time. Not that much of a sacrifice, but I have to admit in a newer bigger vehicle with a lot of power(like my truck), on the Highway it just tracks easy and is more comfortable to drive at 80 mph.

  4. I think I played Little League and, or T-Ball at some fields near Hobby Airport, looking at Google Earth it may have been at what is labeled as Taub Park. This would have been in the early/mid eighties. I have many memories pimping those M&M's and chocolate candy bars door to door and at Almeda mall. Oh the times!

  5. By that logic than there are some real hellholes that are bigger, and therefore better, than Texas:

If someone's wearing a slogan on a shirt, chances are they're not all that familiar with logic in the first place.

Do you mean any slogan or just this one? Because I have a couple of T-shirts with slogans on them I didn't know it said anything bad about me, generally.

  6. True, but he's had over 100 walks the past 5 years, and the OBP is up around .380 most of the time which is good. Batting .236 with runners in scoring position over his career sucks though. Who are we saying he would replace? Not Lee. He can't play center field. Pence could move over to center, Bourn is injury prone and might not be a factor by the time it comes around.

How can you say Bourn is injury prone? Unless I'm missing something, one slight injury, if it's even real, does not make one injury prone. This team would be worse with Dunn. Slower, worse defense, more strikeouts, lower average, there is a reason the Reds are bad and he's a part of it. This offense will be a lot better when Wigginton comes back.

  7. Interesting to say the least. I have noticed a plethora of all races in and around Shadow Creek. I can't say with certainty that there are more of any one race than the other. I do feel that some people get turned off if they see even one black family lurking around. What can you do? Clearly the "powers that be" don't mind investing in the Shadow Creek area, so it must be more than skin color that drives business decisions.

On a side note I've asked a few of my Caucasion brothers what the population of Af. Am. is in this country. I get answers like 50%, 40%, 60%. The reality is that we are less than 12% of the US population. Why do you think that they were so far off? The answer might give you insight into why some people see "the brothas" and think "there goes the neighborhood".

I think the answer means more than that. I am just trying to keep it real.

Sometimes, in someplaces, when our darker skin bretheren move into a neighborhood in numbers, (let's say using your numbers) for instance, if the number goes over 12% some people (not just white folk) get uncomfortable and move. At some point this trend multiplies because for whatever reason a certain portion of the populous likes to live with people they are comfortable with. So now the demographics for that neighborhood are near the 40%, 50%, 60% and all of the sudden no one feels comfortable, (There are burgalur bars on the windows for instance) so everyone who can moves down the street to the new shiny neighborhood (into the biggest mortgage they can afford, out of fear) and the original neighborhood continues to decline. Fear becomes reality sometimes by our actions.

I am just trying to be candid about people's opinions I have heard about the area. I really hope this development revitalizes the area and people of all colors continue to move there and create there own reality of west pearland. I think the heads look corny too, hopefully once they are incorporated into a theme and some landscaping they will look patriotic? I asked a guy at work about your population quiz, he guessed 26%

  8. Can you elaborate further on the "diversity"? Surprised good or surprised bad. Good meaning: they thought it was all one particular demographic and then they saw more of what they didn't expect. Bad meaning: they thought it was all one particular demographic and then they saw more of what they didn't expect. Fill in the blanks as necessary.

They were surprised and or turned off by the number of african americans living and or shopping in the area.

  9. what they fail to realize also is that "old" Missouri City is only 8 or so miles away and they possess alot of spending power out there as there was no where to go (Malls that is) except to Sugar Land or the Galleria....Pearland opens up, you have another 20,000 people to the west off 2234 you have access to...

also..Pearland is south of South Park, Sunnyside, etc....those areas have people but there is a lack of commerce out there with Gulfgate being the closest.....it was bound to happen

You just explained where the "less appealing demographics" brerrabbit mentioned come from. Honestly I have several friends that have looked at moving to the area and this is the biggest deterent for them. They are surprised driving into Shadow Creek Ranch at the "diversity".

  10. I can't help but get the feeling that this is going to be one of those years were we just can't get all phases of our game clicking at the same time. In SD our bats were aspleep but our pitching was on...then our bats start to come around and our bullpen goes to hell, soon our bullpen will normalize and our starters will start to get tagged....sorry for the pessimism, I just don't see our starting pitching holding this level of performance through the rest of the season.

That is except Chacon...he was a highly touted prospect who may end up being a late bloomer...the potential has always been there for him to be a solid number 3 starter....Sampson and Bakke are a different story, though I love Bakke's toughness. Wandy is a wash because he can't pitch on the road, unless they schedule his starts all at home, I mean, why not???? Has a pitcher in history ever had such a steep home-road disparity for so long?

Truth be told, Wandy's first start of the season in San Diego was not that bad, so I have hope. As I remember there were a couple of balls that should have been caught to end innings. He gave up 4 runs in that game and struck out 6 in only 5 innings, by the way, we won that game.

  11. Astros starting pitching team ERA minus Roy Oswalt = 2.59

just trying to be positive. Lidge must have been laughing in the Philly bullpen.

Maybe Roy will turn it around tonight. And Hunter Pence will wake up from his struggles.
