  1. My opinion is that clouds are made of cotton candy. Disagree or not, it's my opinion and therefore no one can dispute it. I'll never need to justify my words because they're opinions. Reasoned justifications are for those fact-obsessed sociopaths, amirite?

Other opinions I have (and that are therefore impossible to disagree with):

    The Holocaust never happened.

Frogs and toads are the same thing, and their urine will give you warts.

    2 + 2 = 1 bazillion.

Prayer will cure cancer so doctors are unnecessary.

    All Katy residents are racists.

Water is poison; people can survive on Coca-Cola alone.

Adult brown bears make excellent playmates for children.

    A barbed-wire tattoo is unique.

The current pope is as good and moral as the last pope.

Mountain tops all need to be removed - regardless of whether or not coal is present beneath.

    Other people have valid opinions.

  2. Weak analogy.

    Entirely your opinion.

And just because other people want to hear legitimate reasons for your point-of-view doesn't mean they're attacking you either.

    Geez.

Nobody's mad. It's not that big of a deal. Either you are an advocate of better lighting or you aren't. I stand by my original statement though. It seems to create voids. Disagree or not.

  3. Come on, find a better reason to demand lighting. A beacon for tourists is perhaps the worst argument ever.

I don't feel that i have to have a good reason for feeling the way i feel to meet your expectations. Houston could stand to light itself up more. That's my opinion and my right. You, Niche, and A/F have the right to not understand my view but just respect that I have that same right and not attack me for it.

  4. I don't feel like i have to have a reason for feeling the way I feel. Houston could stang to light up more. That's my opinion. I have to respect that you, Niche, or A/F may not understand that, but just respect mine and not attack me because of it.

I'm in total agreement with Hanuman on this issue. Let's have more dark space in the city. I'd like to be able to point out Orion or the Big Dipper to my children someday (without having to go to the boondocks to do it).*

You're in the wrong trype of city for that my friend. You should be living in a rural, small town if that's what you want. That's almost like saying you want to ride a horse to get everywhere you want to go in a big city.

  5. Seriously?

    Seriously!?

    YES, SERIOUSLY!!!

Is that what visitors do; they look for tall lighted-up buildings and embark upon a nighttime pilgrimage there in search of "action"?

    Give me a break, C2H.

No Niche you give yourself one. Don't try to blow what I said out of proportion. Yes, visitors are attracted to light and flash. I'm not saying that they only look for lit-up buildings but you can't deny that they're not attention-getters, or maybe YOU can. They also serve as landmarks to help navigate around the city.

  6. What reasoning? I'm asking for you guys' reasoning, not proffering my own because I don't care. You should try to make me care. If you can make me care, you can probably make others care too and further your cause.

Well maybe i can't make you care but for example, downtown Houston has got to be one of the blandest looking downtowns in the country at street level due to the stupid ordinance for lack of signs and lighting displays at street level. I'll give credit to Bayou Place, Main Street, Houston Pavilions, and the areas around Discovery Green for doing it but the fact that too much of downtown has no lighting displays at street level creates a giant VOID between these areas. People complain of often feeling unsafe while walking these between voids.

Also the lack of skyscraper lighting at night makes downtown look devoid of character. If i was a visitor, I would think the TMC and the Uptown/Galleria area is where the action is at night, definitely not downtown. Downtown sits in a shadow of these areas at night. Even though i'm glad they quit with the cheap white christmas lights, it still looks like a black hole.

Overshadowed by what? To what end?

Please don't make me go there.

EDIT: In deference to your suggestion, I'm going to change my avatar.

    funny

  7. So you're arguing that a tall building without decorative lighting defies convention and that a conventional tall building is superior to an exceptional tall building. Is it not equally plausible that the opposite is true?

    (All hail the spaghetti monster!)

And that type of reasoning has plagued Houston for years. Not lighting a skyline as powerful, yet, the tallest building could be part of the reason why Houston was overshadowed in the past. You have to have some flash.

  8. I'm actually pretty disapoointed that this development is not going through. And to think what's going in that empty space instead, A new church??

No disrespect to religion but Houston's already too bible ridden. It's not the intriguing awe-inspiring development this Waterlights district would have been.

And to the people who thought Pearland of 20 years ago was better than today? Care to share your reasons? Pearland still seems to be an exciting new area off 288.

  9. ^^^Nobody knows. I hope it happens not too long after most of the tennants arrive. I was there last night and I have to admit that things are shaping up. A few new tennants have opened. The Guadalara restaurant looks good but its not open. East downtown Houston is really looking good with the increased foot traffic, Toyota Center Events, and Discovery Green.

    How's that for complaining Redscare?

  10. Ok i called William Denton/Geoffrey Jones Office at 832-320-1201 and spoke with the Secretary. I've been goin crazy over information about the Video Screens. All she was able to tell me was the plans were originally in the works and is still being looked at happening in the near future, there's just no installations at this time.

The last few times i called on thie issue, the people who answered the phone had no clue about it!!!

Maybe they're waiting on more tennants to finish opening up. But i thought the meeting w/ City Council said that they only had 4 months (opening day) to get them installed. What's the deal I wonder????

BTW good news about the office tennant. Of course i'm only excited about retail tennants at this point!!!

So did she give a time frame as when it might become a possiblity? Because i was really looking foward to it. The opening of this thing has kind of been a dissapointment so far. The tennants are coming in phases which wasn't in the plans originally. The lighting is mediocre, no video screens.

I thought the developers had big grandiose plans on how the lighting on the circular skyrings was supposed to shoot off in to the night sky? It was supposed to be so stunning, it could be seen from the freeway! ;)

I'm sorry to be a complainer but now Lucky Strike Lanes backed up its opening date to April. How long does it take to build a stinkin bowling alley in an already built facility? The opening date keeps getting pushed back further and further.

  11. I'm in Denver interviewing for residency for the next 3 days... and I must say that the Denver Pavilions is a much better development in comparison to Houston Pavilions. Part of it has to do with the area -- the 16th St Mall where DP is located is an ideal pedestrian friendly, urban corridor. But much of it has to do with the architecture and tenants... much more open and inviting, less sterile concrete and steel.

Kind of disappointing to see what could have been. I will try to post some pictures later.

    Downtown Denver is awesome, btw.

I agree with your post. I used to live in Colorado and hung out in Denver quite often. I was just there in August and I must say dwntn Houston makes dt Denver look like a mini New York in comparison. The Denver Pavilions does seem like the better development, even though Houston Pavilions is larger. Denver's smart planning with the 16th Street Mall has fostered development on adjacent streets, thus creating an atmosphere that's bustling everywhere. Houston downtown's main center of action and nightlife is around Main Street. I'm a little disappointed that HP doesn't seem to be creating the buzz that we all hoped for. The only way that will happen is if we open up more stores off Main Street! Sorry! :(
