  1. Hopefully, if the Houston Pavilions project gets off the ground gets built, it will encourage a little more colorful " glitz" for downtown at night away from the crumby christmas light scheme currently. That would definitely make the place look a little more exciting.
  2. i know i'm hyped up about this project but if it's delayed or doesn't happen at all, i'm not going to be very happy
  3. i was talking in terms of newness and visual appeal.
  4. i hope you weren't talking to me because i've been a casual poster here for a while. I was ComingtoHouston on the old forum before it crashed. But thank you anyway!
  5. Is it just me or does Uptown look better than downtown? The buildings are newer and there are more upscale shops. Everything looks crisp and clean, almost like a miniature downtown Dallas. They have commericial signage on the top of buildings, which looks good at night. The infrastructure, roads, overhead street signs and freeways are better as well, which helps give it more appeal than our city center. And not to mention, the residential population is like 10X larger than that of downtown which gives it more of a vibrant feel. What do you think the deal is? Do you think downtown Houston doesn't have the money than Uptown Houston has to keep better roads, cleaner and renewing of buildings? Just something that i've always wondered about because aside from the skyline and Main Street, i think Uptown Houston should be Houston's downtown.
  6. done! But how many of you guys think this will get built? I think it will because i think the same thing is happening in downtown Houston as i observed happening in downtown Denver in the later part of the 90s. The Denver Pavilions opened 7 years ago and has been a seed for more growth along the 16th Street Mall. BTW, 16th Street Mall is pretty LIVE on Saturdays, full of shoppers and outers.
  7. I can't quite figure out what portion of downtown this will be sitting in. (That is if it gets built)
  8. very well put velvetj. it's people who have shortsighted views for our city who serve as reason as to why Houston's progress is so slow compared to that of other cities.
  9. Good work on the initiative greystone? Where have you been? You left for a while, are you back? I hope that meeting meant that your letter was inspiring enough to bring about some change.i was confused on that uniformity issue as well. Does that mean that they are going to try to change the current lighting or turn off the christmas lighting? Redscare kind of spread some light a little bit for me. Thanks Redscare
  10. I think as far as being tourist friendly, San Antonio beats any other city in Texas hands down. I find it amusing that reading through Dallas Vacationers magazine that Dallas always refers to themselves as: Dallas, the number one visitors destination in Texas. I'm sorry but the only people who think that is people in Dallas. San Antonio rocks and as far as smelly downtowns, i think Houston's is definitely on that list sometimes when it has trouble with the sewer problem.
  11. Houston needs to continue in its mission to becoming a more forward thinking city. That's why Downtown/Midtown areas are remaining still right now. Because they're not really making the areas appealing to where people want to visit and live. We need more shops, restaurants, and more entertainment venues (Movie Theatre, Bowling Alley, Arcade,). The Aquarium is great but it can't hold it all by itself. I think the reason downtown Fort Worth is doing so well is because they've livened the place up with the Sundance Square and all the entertainment options. The same could happen in Houston, but it seems that the developers are getting more and more lazy, thinking that they've done so much, they can just sit back and relax. No, there's no time for sitting back. While Houston's sitting back, other cities are continuing to thrive.
  12. I think Houston skyline is almost ok at night for the most part, but the White Christmas lights on every building doesn't do it any justice. Christmas lights to me just show that the city took absolutely no time in decorating the skyline at night.
  13. Yeah no problem, i'm just as curious as the next guy. I want to see Houston thrive just like the next guy. I think that would definitely start in the city center.
  14. Dallas is a good city, so is Houston. Neither one of them feel newer or older but Dallas has less trees and slightly better air so one thing for sure, Dallas is a little bit cleaner. Driving up through Dallas, you see much of the similar things you'd see in Houston. You see the country, ghettos, shotgun shacks, hi-rise and mid-rise lofts and apartments and some urban development. But being that Houston is larger, it has a little bit more to work with.
  15. I just called the number folks! A man answered. He sounded more friendly than a few of you made the lady out to sound. I asked him for a few details, pretending to be a business proposer. He stated the Website hasn't been updated because they had been running behind schedule. I asked him if the project was a go. He stated that they are spending alot of money and investing alot to insure the project is a go. That's all he could tell me. Soo, I'm hoping so, for Houston.
  16. Denver Colorado is a good blueprint on what i think what Houston should somewhat try to imitate. Inside the Denver Pavilions, there's much shopping and retail, multiple restaurants, and a bowling alley just opened in late 2004. I've been trying to understand on why Houston is so slow at these type of things. I think it has just as much potential.
  17. I would like to put my 2 cents in on this one. I am sort of biased on this one. First, i feel that Downtown should be the premeir destination over anything else in this city, with the amentities, urban style living, and everything else. END OF STORY. Downtown is more than likely going to be the first major attraction before anything else in this city due to its massive size. Sadly to say, there are many close-minded people who like to judge a city by its downtown only. While Uptown is a good thing to have in this city, the fact that its located in West Houston runs the risk of it being missed by those petty visitors who want to deem Houston as UGLY based on their first impressions off I-45. I love Uptown because Uptown actually rivals many cities downtowns, even our own. I think a city's vibrancy should be more than one area, it should be primarily Downtown but not Downtown only. Driving through downtown Houston can be quite depressing sometimes. It looks as if it has gone ignored for a while. Some of the areas surrounding downtown such as areas off North Main Street and east of the George R. Brown convention center look absolutely HORRIBLE. Some of the older buildings such as the ones that look like old warehouse shacks gotta go. That's why i'm not against uptown getting things like this because let's face it, aside from the skyline, Uptown gives an overall better impression of Houston as both exciting/vibrant than downtown right now. But hopefully with the spark of retail that downtown might be getting, hopefully things will continue to change.
  18. the only thing i can say that i don't like about this new plan is the fact that BRT lines are not doing anything to alleviate the already existing problem we have of dirty, polluted air. It's really more or less contributing to the problem. Anyone else with me on that?
  19. i was just asking because i wanted to get some information from him. So tierwestah, your snide comment was really unnecessary. Sometimes i wonder from reading your posts on here if you're mad at the world about something. Because there are times when you can say some pretty hurtful things for no reason at all. Your comment was not only a stab against me, but at greystone as well. As for Debmartin, it's no surprise because i remember some time ago sending her a PM and never got a response back, yet she would still continue to post on the forum.
  20. Sorry off topic folks but anyone know where greystone08 is? He hasn't been around for a while. I know he's not all that much of a frequent poster but i've tried pm and i get no response. Normally when i pm him i get a response w/in a day or two. I had a question in regard to a letter he was supposed to have been writing to the mayor. Moderators, did he leave the forum like our beloved twe2nty se7en? It's a shame because he was more of a peacemaker and sometimes calmed things down when flamewars would break out.
  21. Now that Superbowl 2009 is out for the count for Houston, do you guys think the progress downtown will slow down? In other words, do you think Houston will lose the intensity and the urge to pump up downtown. I sure hope not because i am so excited with the buzz that's going downtown. It's almost like a new beginning.
  22. thanks greystone! check out this pic i found on the dallas website, not too bad. Still could use less ofthe white christmas lights but this is more acceptable because at least it was christmas time when this was taken. courtesy of Noah from dallasfortworth urban forum http://forum.dallasmetropolis.com/attachme...tachmentid=5715
  23. Thanks DJ. I hope you all signed the petition because i'm gonna get this out to the next City Council Meeting. Large Texas, can you get me access to your part of the signature page? I'm gonna add your list to my list of signatures
  24. Tierwester, i applaud you. You're not afraid to speak your mind and i respect that. I've been kinda nervous to emphasize some of things like you did in fear of being ridiculed. And yes the white xmas lights on every building is very BORING. Finally someone who feels as adimate about it as i do. Corection: Lightenup from the old Houston forum. Can't forget you. You related to me on this issue too, wherever or whoever you are these days
