Only in Houston could an area with 2 large universities be such a disaster and have people wanting to preserve it exactly as is segregation and all... Why would anyone want a neighborhood dominated by one ethic group in the 21 century? This should be a booming university neighborhood and it's not. UH needs to jumpstart cleaning up the area.

Maybe look glamorous, don't require much water, can grow surrounded by concrete without lifting it up, are ever-green, create focal points and don't litter a parking lot with 4 tons of leaves annually?

The existing structure on this site was demolished I think yesterday morning as the site rubble was being cleared as I passed heading to the gym yesterday. Guessing this one will move kind of quickly!

Right now there is a massive tent community on Caroline so all they did was move in that direction. City needs to fence off asap

The fact of the matter is there are just four public schools and five overall in the state of Texas that are in the World University top 400 AND designated by the Carnegie Foundation at the highest level (doctoral granting with highest research activity). Those five in order of ranking;

 

University of Texas, Austin

Rice University, Houston

Texas A&M University, College Station

University of Texas-Dallas, Richardson

University of Houston, Main Campus

 

Quite frankly, instead of wasting hundreds of millions offering duplicate services in the one region of this state that has the most options (Rice, UH, and A&M serve this region well), the UT system needs to elevate UTSA, UTEP, UTRGV, UT Arlington, and UT Tyler. That would be in the best interest of this state. It would also be in the best interest of this state to help elevate Texas Tech as well.

 

As a Texan, would it be in all of our best interests if the Valley, San Antonio, El Paso, the Panhandle, and a second DFW area school were elevated before another one was added to Southeast Texas?

 

 

In case you did not notice, the average person can't afford to relocate to a new city and have their own housing at 17-18. Even dorms are out of reach for the average family without financing. Extremely privileged view point, do you know the average person dies within less then 40 miles of where they were born? The average person can't afford to leave their city, much less without family support. 

So say I'm the child of poor migrant workers as over 25-30% of Houston is and I have 2 siblings. Can my parents with no credit history afford to send me to Dallas with added cost of a dorm? Would they even if they could, risking losing a child that may not come back? Would they trust their child in a far away city alone?

So you are saying A&M which is literally 100 MILES from downtown Houston is a Houston school? If I'm poor and have to take bus, it's 50 dollars round trip. If parents are dishwashers, that's over a day of work of disposable income. Does that seem like a real option? And of you think Rice serves the Houston community you are dreaming. 57% is from out of state and with really small classes that means literally less than 1,500 TEXANS [Not Houston alone] have a chance of getting in.

Exactly; the amount of "privilege" on this forum is crazy. Fascinating these comments come from people who obviously consider themselves better educated and more cosmopolitan with references to NYC, Boston, Kinkaid etc as if no one else here has lived in NYC or gone to a preparatory school. The fact is that education is a right and not a privilege and that by granting UH a monopoly on a decent public education in Houston you are denying education to people in the Houston community who would benefit from another option. 

UH exist for the benefit of the Houston population, not the other way around...

Yeah, the company is called Refuge Real Estate and they actually own the lot where the barber and record thing is. A coffee shop is under construction as well though not allowed to say by who;). They are renovating the small warehouse in back to expand. The lady nextdoor hates them and refuses to sell that beautiful commercial building she has falling down. They recently expanded outside East End and have projects now in Near Northside and 3rd Ward. 

You do realize UCLA has to share it's turf with over 10 large public campuses right?:

Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez hills, Call State Long Beach, Cal State La, ect not including 10 + private universities. 

UH needs to stop being a crooked institution. UH is not preparing the graduates we need neither in quality or quantity.

There's nothing organic about Upper Kirby, the TIRZ widened the road and landscaped it to look like a mini highway with cars going 40+ on it. It's a major thoroughfare and try crossing the street at Kirby and Whole Foods on a bike to see how long can happen without getting hit lol... None of the things mentioned except for Kuhl Lindscome embrace the street they are part of in an open way. 

There's literally a 6 story free garage that's is literally a 3 min walk max from any store in the entire complex. Is reserving 3-5 spots for big anchors really a dumb idea considering most people go there for a specific store? Someone going to Brasserie 19 is most likely not going to Gap or the gym equipment store under Americas. So many people here like to call big developers dumb but don't exactly seem to be successful developers. Market forces don't always match our ideals

This technically is not even a publicly funded park and a majority of inhabitants of the surrounding zip codes are not even traditional nuclear "families" so sound a bit entitled. A lot of people don't enjoy being around a bunch of people's screaming children so shouldn't there be amenities that address their interest?

There's a huge amount of corruption involved in building that traffic circle in that image that is going to commence soon involving the local TIRZ that is paying 30 million dollars to build it for Midway and teardown a portion of the garage they already have an easement for... Like how did Midway even build on it in the first place. Once those works are complete phase 3 can start. Love the project but they should all be in jail:D!

Ignoring market situations and pretending demand will fix them creates big messes like the 4th ward and south midtown where people build houses in fortress like clusters instead of being open and welcoming. The way they are building now will be extremely hard to fix in the future not facing anything and with small cracked sidewalks and little foliage. Unsafe cities with growing demand and population lead to the urban structures that your see you in central Sao Paulo or Guatemala City which is not exactly what I think people would want for Midtown. There is a serious  public health crisis in the area and these little centers are not the solution, they are more like insurance lope hole scams. [ work in healthcare here:) ]. The city needs to help these people and get them off the streets in a more serous manner. 

There is a huge difference between sprinkling these across a city versus concentrating them in one single area creating an LA style skid row. A housing complex is not the same thing as a clinic like this and housing project in those cities serve a wide range of people versus the one's in midtown that for some reason seem to be filled with mentally ill, addictions, and people with terminally illnesses  You can't argue that Cuney Homes just across 288 serves this same demographic. Mixed-use is not a synonym for mixed-income. Villa Victoria is not safe and has serious gang issues so really should not be mentioned as a model. The problem with the U.S is we have come to accept this crap when the city centre should be a Utopia to enjoy in peace like central  London, Paris, or Moscow and not overtaken by people who make one feel unsafe.

One of the strips on one of the bridges already is out/not working, believe woodhead but otherwise looks "ok". 

Drove by this last night, they were still working and had all the light fixtures on in Kirby whatever and it looked amazing!

Maybe he's referencing the fact it's a small plot sandwiched between a federal fortress and a very ugly low rise public housing project wasting away on prime land lol   The view from the lower floors is going to suck.

That statement only covers the first phase of the project, the footprint of the current building is small in relation to the site so imagine it at the core of a much larger development perhaps like something you'd see at porta nuova.
