  1. Unless something has recently changed, that "Brokered" should be changed to "Dark". KOLE has been off the air for a long time. Probably warrants someone filing a PTD against the sale, given it's been off the air longer than a calendar year. Stan would have to verify it being operational, no chance of KOLE Port Arthur at my QSL.

  2. The oldies came from WXHC Homer, New York "Oldies 101-5" being fed across the formerly testing 101-5 signal from an apparent internet feed. It has left the air as of the next day from when this thread was penned, and has not returned.

That's funner than you guys' days. :P

Really?? You told me once upon a time that you are blind. That's certainly not something to be fraudulent about, Mouse, and here I took you at face value on the disability. Not so funny now, eh? Smh. You just never know who's paying real attention to every word that's posted.

Filio: your response to mrtejano is well beneath you. No call for it whatsoever. Not everyone is as well versed at posting on a radio message board as you and me. I've enjoyed and appreciated most of your contributions over all the years at radio-info, the Streamline board, and here at the HAIF. This is not an example of one of those. A man of your age and stature should know better than to respond like a 15 year old high school student. For shame, and I am flabbergasted that actually came from you. I, for one, have lost a measure of respect for you by responding to him as such. He's a kid. If you want to pick on someone, try someone your own age, like me. I believe you already know, I can certainly hold my own.

Perhaps I shouldn't say this, and this goes out to everyone reading, not anyone in particular, but if you don't have anything constructive or contributing to say regarding Houston radio, take yourself on back to an area like the transportation and traffic board where you can haggle with each other over the endless, and mostly ridiculous, arguments that are going back and forth in that area of the site.

This area has just as much merit to some of us as that area has to some of you, and doubtfully was created to permit ridicule when someone like Blue Dogs or mrtejano attempt to make a contribution within it. Something tells me those of you that do it, wouldn't have the cajones to do it if you were standing eye to eye with one of those gentlemen.

Mrtejano, I'm sorry you were subjected to that nonsense. Some folks here apparently have no class. Your LPFM was likely KZCV-LP Baytown blowing in towards Uvalde Rd due to the weather. It has no license to cover and may very well be testing. It was granted a construction permit in January. As Joe said, it's only a guess. There are several operations attempting to use the frequency around Houston.

  4. Ok, so I did a little bit of investigating on the carrier. Btw, audio has returned again and it is now featuring end times preaching complete with conversations of the false prophet and antichrist being revealed to the earth very soon. Still having distortion on the high ends, but I heard tinkering going on here and there while driving. I've got it nailed down to a tee as to where it's being originated. Now, had I known this before, I wouldn't have taken to the HAIF and 5-0ed its existence.

Sorely disappointed that this programming was chosen over what COULD be going out over the 101-5 signal, but I'll just leave it at that. <_<

Since I was in the area, I stopped for lunch. Hungry Farmer sure hasn't lost a step in serving up a mean stuffed baked potato. ^_^ God help all of the Northside if we ever lose this treasure.

  5. I expressed this in private, but it bears repeating. I, for one, am so glad that Lee Dittert didn't live to see this happen to his beloved Radio 1090 KACO. It was once a tremendous asset to Austin County, as a 250 watt daytimer just west of Bellville. Small, hometown grown and hometown serving station. I never thought I'd say it, but the facility was in better hands while Roy Henderson was the steward. It may have been off the air all the time, but at least he didn't lose the license altogether.

For shame, Don Werlinger. I hope when they catch you, they throw away the damn key. You should never have the opportunity to be associated with another broadcast facility again. Ever.

  6. We've got a pirate up here in the 4-4, operating on 101-5 FM. It is religious programming in English, and gave an 843 area code phone number during the preaching. Extremely strong signal here in Acres Home, however, the high end treble in the voices is distorted. I heard a dead carrier here yesterday, but this is the first programming I've caught on it. Definitely not the new KHSX-LP, unless the 100 watter is pumping out more than it should. Actually sounds like this thing has a lot of elevation, with low power. Along the same lines as KMAZ-LP at 102-5.

Of course, reception reports are always encouraged and appreciated.

Edit to add: Well...that's odd. The preaching stopped, then suddenly Glass Tiger's "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone" started midway through the song, then it stopped suddenly and back to dead air for going on 10 minutes now. Hmm...

    Maybe it is KHSX-LP testing...

  7. This was tried back in the 80's. It didn't work then, and the lights were either removed or left there to rot away. About 10 years ago, the lights began to pop up again on certain on ramps. Now that freeway lanes like those on the North Freeway have been reconfigured and restriped, giving entering traffic their own dedicated entry lane, these metered lights will become obsolete. All they have ever accomplished was to back traffic onto the service road. Thankfully I learned how to drive correctly, and as a result, know that it's my responsibility to yield the far right lane to those drivers who are already on the freeway. If only all Houstonians knew how to correctly merge into the flow of freeway traffic these "dummy lights" wouldn't be necessary. That's why they are there, IronTiger, for the dummies that don't know the merging laws of the road.

They might as well just ditch all of them. Very few people have ever paid much attention to them anyway, and I've lost count of how many I've seen drivers that actually DID stop for the thing, getting rear ended for their trouble. Just say another one last week at the 45 SB entrance right before West Road.

  8. This is one facility we don't typically hear of breaking the rules, but there she is, all 5kW pumping out Radio Saigon programming this evening. Covering up the flamethrowing XEW Mexico City pretty effectively to boot. Just a trace of W Radio underneath KREH. Found it over licensed power at 20:45, a recheck at 21:30, and here again at 22:25.

Something must not have triggered the power drop, or some type of testing occurring. It's certainly not like Bustos to run the day power at night.

@Tumbleweed: Any association with the bar of the same name up on Kuykendahl? When I worked for the former hotel chain, our management company used to have annual Christmas parties over there. It was a tremendous place, but I heard something about it closing up shop. Shame, if true. I saw one of the best concerts ever played in Houston there. Bad Company. My wife and I barely made it home after that night. Good times and great memories!

Purple, that's almost spooky.  When I read your post I was at Dirty Juicy Burgers conversating with Rage.  And yes, he is smiling behind the counter...  :)

Behold the powers possessed by the purple one . Now, if I just had telekinesis, I wouldn't have to drive all the way to FM 1960 to savor a Dirty w/cheese, and a basket of buffalo fries.

Last time I was in there, he had Joe-FM on one screen and KTRK on the other. How he's getting KZHO all the way up there is pretty amazing to me. Must be one heck of an antenna hooked up to that flat screen...unless he's got his own personal Joe feed.

  11. The name bestowed upon my first car, a 1972 Dodge Demon. It's my favorite, so it received a cool (to me) name.

Although, "the Boss" is a pretty good name for my convertible, but that one's the sole courtesy of the Ford motor company.

  12. The best image I could conjur for a purple devil, without using the Warner Brothers character. The screen name itself comes from what the first car I've ever owned came to be known as, which is a 1972 plum crazy colored Dodge Demon. Still have the car, although it hasn't seen the light of day in a few years. Well, unless you count what light comes through the cracks in the walls of the barn.

  13. Radio who?!?

John Davis is employed at Cox Radio, Rage. Also, a member over at yonder dictatorship. 1+1=2...well, to most people, anyway.

Whenever you tire of being chastised and belittled, we'll be right here at the world famous HAIF radio emporium to help nurse your wounds. We're not trying to scratch and claw to save our jobs by arguing every contrasting opinion down over here, old friend. Could we not give away free publicity to the yahoos, John?

Now, for a truly great hamburger, I suggest Dirty Juicy Burgers in Humble for your fresh, never frozen, patty of Angus beef goodness for everyone reading this. Just mention the HAIF, for a friendly smile, a warm greeting from the guy standing behind the register, and a feeling of true appreciation for spending your money in this fine establishment, purchasing a mouth watering Dirty Burger. You'll get them anyway, but a handshake and a nice conversation will surely follow, giving the additional mention of being a fellow HAIFer of the good raging DJ. Maybe an extra couple of fries in the basket, as well.  I recommend it highly. Now that's how you give a free plug, Rage.

Anyway, yes, good to see they gave it a second look. I would've lost a ton of respect for what they are doing over there, had they not given the idea reconsideration.

Riding off of the success of the previous format is a little bit of a stretch, though. It's been 93Q Country for 24 years now, Rage. More than double its life as a Top 40. I don't fault them in the least bit for using the old sounders, taglines, morning show name, and such. Pretty smart to continue on the brand recognition. Look how long the format between the two incarnations lasted, when they abandoned the 93Q heritage. Barely lasted a year with Easy Country 92-9.

  14.

Dated today, 04-01-16. DTV America has been granted a license to cover for channel 40 in Beaumont:

TX  -0000008492 KBMN-LD  188068  DTV AMERICA CORPORATION License to cover construction E CHAN-40 BEAUMONT, TX permit no: 0000007803, callsign KBMN-LD.

Stan, can you confirm reception of it? Is it legitimate, or a ghost?

You guys kill me.  This is the same talk that I heard about Brooksmith when I invested there.  There was money to be made there, there's money to be made in Independence Heights and S3mh you're right Near Northside and Fifth Ward is currently being gentrified also that's why I'm investing there also.  It only takes a little vision.

Well sure there's money to be made. There's a sucker born every minute, stuu, and I'm sure you'll find your fair share. I'm just here to provide the reality of the situation that is Independence Heights. By all means, if you find enough dopes to rope, go right on ahead.

But for those of you who DO get suckered into the hyperbole, don't say that the purpledevil didn't warn you. Not everyone has the cajones to live in this area, Good luck...and make sure to keep it loaded and within reach. ;)

  16. So then, no John Lander promos saying "Houston's AM & FM stereo combination, KKBQ-FM Pasadena Houston, KKBQ Houston"? I think we listeners can live with that. Look forward to hearing it on Joe-FM. I can't wait to hear the initial 79Q broadcasts from the Central Bank building. Everyone has pretty much heard the flip of KYND to the simulcast with 790, but to hear the original broadcasts from the AM only will be quite a treat.

After all these years, it's still remarkable to me that the Big 610 dropped their longtime top 40 format just 13 months earlier, making way for Lander to take the then KULF to the top of Houston ratings, on an AM facility no less. Even at that time, it was becoming unheard of for an AM music station to blow away everything else on the dial. That's why KKBQ still resonates with our generation the way it does.

It was Luke's Hamburgers prior to its current incarnation as Zone D'Erotica, but before Luke's it was originally a Roy Rogers restaurant.

Sorry, mkultra, but you have forgotten an incarnation of the building. Before Zone d'Erotica it was a head shop named the Houston 420. The 420 is what replaced Luke's, after sitting dormant for several years.
