  1.

Construction, however, won't start on the building until about half of it is spoken for by future tenants.

Unfortunately, I fear this is a euphemism for "probably isn't going to happen".  Last I heard, there were no future tenants for 609 Main, and nobody has announced moving into the soon-to-be-complete Central Square building, either, so things don't look good for yet another office building.

I'd love to see this one go up, but I don't put its chances any higher than 6 Houston Center (which I'd already put behind Capitol Tower).

  2. Pay for Global Entry and you can avoid that line.  Last time I was on an international flight into IAH (about a month ago), the regular customs line at the baggage claim was very long, but the Global Entry line had nobody in it.  Although it took forever for me to get my bag in the first place (I swear, my bag was one of the last to come off the A380), once I had my bag I was out of the airport within a couple minutes.

  3. Actually a Brownsville spaceport makes a lot more than one at Ellington Field.

To take maximum advantage of Earth's rotation, you want a spaceport to be as close to the equator as possible, and you want the rocket to go east.  Also, you want nothing but sea (or empty desert or something that won't have any people or property to harm) over the route it will initially go.

This means you want to be as far south as possible, and you want the ocean to the east.  Not only do you have a populated area just east of Ellington, but directly east would take you over southern Louisiana.  This means launches would have to be angled to the south a bit.

I can see this being used for suborbital flights, but anything to go into orbit or out into space would probably make more sense to launch from Brownsville (or Cape Canaveral), unless they need the particular orbit that Ellington would be ideal for.

  4. The Shinkansen has never had a fatal collision in the more than half a century that it has been running, so assuming they implement it in Texas the same way they implemented it in Japan, we have nothing to worry about safety.

  5. Bayou Place isn't even 20 years old.  Isn't it a bit wasteful to be considering tearing it down already?  Or is it really too low-density for the area now?  As others have said, the Houston Chronicle block seems like a better place to redevelop in the immediate future.

  6. Today this article was linked from Swamplot: http://urbanland.uli.org/industry-sectors/bayou-city-reclaiming-houstons-signature-waterways/

It was published yesterday, yet it has the following:

The 18-story Park Place at Buffalo Bayou office building, developed by Houston-based Pinto Realty Partners, is under construction, designed to contain 250,000 square feet (23,000 sq m) of high-end office space while offering a fitness center and locker rooms for tenants who want to jog or hike at Buffalo Bayou Park across the street. It is the first office building in a growing residential corridor near downtown, says Michael Anderson, executive vice president of Colvill Office Properties, which is leasing the building.

Is this article incorrect, or is the project not on hold anymore?

  7. I think the only real disappointment here is that they were unwilling/unable to put the large windows in the lobby as the rendering showed, and instead they just have a few small windows by the doors.  I have no complaints about the color scheme change.

  8. Of which of the hundreds of buildings lol

On the Burj Khalifa (tallest building in the world).  On one of the tiered balconies near the top, there's something yellow that might be a sports car.  I guess it had to go up in the service elevator!
