  1. The John Whitmire thread is locked, so I figured I might as well put this here because he is trying to kill the Collective Library. I'll try not to make this political, but this is BS.

The city already spent millions of dollars preparing to move into a very nice new library, but now he decides on his own to renovate an old dilapidated library at the cost of 14.5 million because the new library is close to a bar that used to host drag shows.

The Montrose Library’s long-planned move to the Montrose Collective on Westheimer Road — to which the city has already dedicated millions of dollars — is officially off the table.
The announcement from Mayor John Whitmire during a Tuesday morning press conference came as a surprise to many, including City Councilmember Abbie Kamin, whose District C includes Montrose; Steve Radom, the developer behind the Montrose Collective; and many library employees.

He said relocating the library to Westheimer would position it “very close to adult entertainment, on the third story of a commercial building, behind the hamburger building. When I saw it, I said, ‘Not on my watch.’”

Planning Commission deferred this. Several neighbors spoke against it because of all the construction in the area (Covenant House) future construction at Disco Kroger, Skanska and past construction at Hanover and Colombe d'Or. In my eye that shouldn't be a consideration for this project, they aren't the ones creating that other construction traffic. Houston Councilwoman Abbie Kamin asked for it to be deferred. A representative of Radom Capital spoke and he said they plan to make it more family oriented(ie the smoke shop and Adam & Eve probably won't be here any more) and will have a meeting with the councilwoman.

At least they are planning construction unlike Skanska sitting on a lot for years. And this wouldn't be new construction.

And since when is Montrose supposed to be family friendly?

I wasn't aware of The Chelsea closing its doors at 888 Westheimer Rd, Suite 119.

The Chelsea's website is still up with no closure announcement or thanking customers for their support. I don't know if such an announcement was posted to the restaurant's social media. However, The Chelsea's Instagram has either been removed or renamed.

They have been closed for about a month with no big announcements. I was also getting Instagram ads about happy hour when they were closed. I randomly walked by at times wondering if they were doing a remodel or something.

I gave the place a shot and wasn't impressed. I suppose others felt the same.

  4. I'm not very excited about this news. All of those bars mentioned above are Washington bars that serve overpriced drinks, subpar food, and turn into a nightclub after 10pm. This might just be a happy hour place for me.

More importantly, it's going to mess up my Poison Girl weekend nights with overfill from the club :)

  5. Surprised no one has mentioned this yet. I've been walking by the past couple of weeks and thought it was just undergoing a remodel. There's an alcohol permit with an applicant of a Thai restaurant.

I'm not sure there is a Thai food demand with Nidda a block away. Perhaps they will be staying open late with the bar traffic nearby.

  6. La Grange was perfect on a nice sunny day or evening. The atmosphere just kind of sucked the past year or so.

A Goodnight Hospitality takeover would be nice, but they have been focused on more high end dinning. I don't know what the rent is at La Grange, but It would be great if they could open a causal place like La Grange was.

My ideal setup would be dining in the front, and more of a causal bar scene in the back. Kind of like how Hey Merchant and Underbelly were set up.

That's not true. Malibu opened around the July 4th weekend. It closed sometime in mid or late September.

Yeah I guess they were officially closed September, but the doors looked to be locked a month later. Just a poor attempt to make some money. Hell, they didn't even take down the Present Compony sign.

  8. I'm really trying hard to like the restaurants at this place, but I just can't.

    Marmo:
Nice happy hour. Appetizers and drinks are good. It's going to cost you after 6pm. Drinks are ridiculously priced if you are drinking anything other than wine.

    Graffiti Raw:
You are spend some $$$ here

    The Chelsea:
Decent wine prices - not sure about liquor. $24 for a burger and appetizers aren't much cheaper.

    Picnik:
Haven't checked it out yet. Looked online and the menu doesn't draw me in.

I wouldn't call these places fines dining either. Much better restaurants you can go for the same price or cheaper. Traffic is going to be horrid on Grant St. with Uchi and these places. I feel bad for the neighbors. Just rip it all up and turn it into a upscale Rainey St.

That's my Montrose is dead rant for the week.

  9. I don't really have anything to add, but I jog along this trail regularly without ID. Who jogs with a wallet or anything else for that matter? Houston drivers are crazy and this could happen to anyone. Of course this may not have been the drivers fault.
