Honorable Mention: Marriott Marquis
Developer: Rida Development
Landscape Architect: SWA and Clark Condon
Building Architect: Morris Architects
Delivered: Under construction now, with estimated completion in September 2016
It’s not an apartment, but you can no longer talk about pools in Houston without mentioning the Marriott Marquis Convention Center’s Texas-shaped lazy river towering 110 feet above Downtown. The resort terrace also includes an infinity pool, full-service spa and fitness center, outdoor bar and grill, and group pavilion.

2. Market Square Tower
Developer: Woodbranch Investments
Landscape Architect: Kudela & Weinheimer
Building Architect: Jackson & Ryan
Delivered: Under construction now, with estimated completion in early 2017
One of Market Square Tower’s two pools will be a heart-stopper—40 floors up, it cantilevers over the edge of the tower. Three sides are glass enclosures, and there will be three window panes so bold swimmers can peer down to the street from the bottom of the pool. The deck will be top-quality, all granite on pedestal pavers. Kudela & Weinheimer (which released this new rendering for us) tells us it’s been particularly challenging meeting hurricane requirements on the 40th floor.

Just counted floors and looks like this one is done rising. The coumns rising appear to be for decorative effect. If you compare the pic to the rendering the top floor does not extend out in the corner like the rest.

Not to fuel the fire but it would have a park at both ends so it would be a fitting name.

Tall skinny hotel, what is this NYC?
All kidding aside I agree that this is better that building new. Can't imagine how busy Texas St will be once all the projects along it are finished. Just off the top of my head from whats there and to be completed.
The Aquarium
Music Venue
Movie Theater
3 Performing arts theaters/halls
1 Park
4 hotels
6 or so residential buildings
4 office buidings (including tallest in Texas)
6-7 Restaurants maybe more
2 Church/Schools
1 Ballpark
4-5 bars
All this within what 12 blocks? Then of course you add the retail that will come at the bottom of the new residential buildings. I don't think there is another street like it in Houston or maybe even Texas.

Unfortunately I happen to know the guy that was shot near the Camden superblock. The story, as has been relayed to me, is they had parked in the area, not exactly sure where, and came back to their vehicle. Once inside they were approached by two males that appeared to be asking for assistance. They looked young and unassuming so despite my friends better judgment he rolled down the window. They asked if they could use his phone. He told them that he would make the phone call for them but not hand over his phone, at which point they pulled a gun to his head. At this point my friend yelled duck (female passenger in the truck) and smashed the gas pedal. These idiots apparently let 5 bullets fly at his truck and actually landed one. He drove a few blocks before stopping outside a bar were the female that was with him ran inside asking for help covered in my friends blood. She happens to catch the attention of a doctor inside. Apparently the doctor went outside and tended to my friend until paramedics arrived. Of course once they did he was taken to the hospital and went into immediate surgery and thankfully should make a full recovery.

I don't disagree with you but to play devils advocate is that not what they are literally doing in the energy corridor?

I just thought about how cool it would be if that new two story glass portion in front of Allen 2 was a flagship Apple Store. It would definetley have the client base to support it.

Thanks! If these are in fact the final plans when would they start?

Anyone have an update on this? I've been made to understand that it is full steam ahead. No re skinning of Allen One but a full re configuration of the first two floors

Isn’t the head of Marquette the guy who said they were considering multiple towers in Houston? I believe it was something along the lines of Houston reminding him of Chicago in the 90's. If so I’m glad to see a developer put his money where his mouth is. I just hope he spreads around the love to midtown as well. One can dream right?
p.s. if someone has the link to that video/interview I’d love to see it again.

Seems for the best. With the park view and access this would offer it seems better suited for a residential highrise.

The one in NOLA opened in December I believe? If the interiors look anything like those this will be a home run.
Also, who would have thought that two of the more rare hotels flags would be flying directly next two the GRB. Great times in Houston.

It looks like the letters are going right above the last floor. I wonder if that crown portion will have some lighting effect.

How tall is calpine center?
Im trying to figure out if this is the ever important building that will finally stretch the skyline northward when viewed from 45 south inbound.
As it stands, the skyline seems to end at the former Chase bank building, which leaves the skyline lacking towards the north because of the severe dropoff after the 75 story building. Fingers crossed.
I know commercial floors are taller than resi, so i will be let down if this tower isnt much taller than Calpine.
At 502 ft tall it is almost excatly half the height of 600 Travis(1002 ft) so it will extend the skyline but the drop off will still be notable.

I like to theorize what I would do from time to time. I think my preference would be to shift this building to the Houston Chronicle property. Then on this property build something like the W Hotel around union square in NYC. Trendy but respctfull of the historical nature of the area. I think that would be better for the streetscape and also further help support some of the bars and restaurants in the area. This would also place the the Stream/Exxex building next to the JPMorgan Chase tower which I think would look better than a gap between them. Just my fictional two cents.

Saw the interior of Blackfinn is being worked on. It seemed like a remodel was already under way. Anyone have any information as to who may be coming in? It seems like a really fast turn around if in fact the new tenant is already working on the space.

According to this yes but obviously this is a rendering from The Catalyst. They may have mirrored it or actually collaborated who knows.
