Nice edition but will be cloaked from view from all sides of downtown except the east side. In-fill is still good tho.
You might be pleasantly surprised driving in from 45 North. I think it's going to stand out almost as much as the Hess Tower and help fill the gap between it and the Marriott Marquis.

Great use of the small plot of land they have to work with.

haha! SAME! i would be with family or friends driving on 610 and look over and say wow i want to live by that building and in that part of town and yep...for 24 years now i have lived in the best part of town in my opinion (and as a bonus the condo i bought 2 years ago on the same street i have lived on for 24 years has a view of the Williams Tower from my living room and bedroom!)
That's awesome...congrats!
The Transco Tower is like Houston's compass to me...when I see it, I know I'm close to home.
I grew up in Kingwood, and had been downtown and the Astrodome/AstroWorld area several times, but never really knew about the galleria area until I was about 12 or so. It seemed so much more vibrant at the time (late 80's/early 90's). I knew that everything I need would be close, and all the restaurants gave me so many options.
Back then though, downtown was a dead zone. I love where I'm at, and it's perfect for me location wise...but I'd actually rather live between downtown and the Museum District these days.

The 901' Williams Tower will still command it's presence in the Uptown area for a long time. The only thing to come remotely close in height would have been the new Chevron Tower, Downtown. At a height of 859' and +$100 oil, even if next door, would allow plenty of crown height and circling lighthouse light room.
Who knows if/when the project will be built at the current height. It's good to get some density on this side of the Galleria since the gap between the Williams Tower & the ugly condo towers along 59 is wide.
This will fill the gap in this area if it goes forward, no doubt...as would the Chevron Tower for that part of downtown had it been built.

I actually like the older rendering that looked more like a few 20-35 story towers. It had a better design IMO, but it stayed in its lane.
One thing I love about the Transco/Williams tower is how it stands alone. It's so dominating. It's such a beautiful and defining building for the area. Its presence is complimented so well by its design. I'll never forget the impact it had on me the first time my dad drove us by it when I was a kid, and as we went down Westheimer, I remember thinking "this is where I want to live when I grow up." And sure enough, here I am to this day.
This would be a nice building in another part of town (Upper Kirby area comes to mind), but it would at least somewhat diminish that commanding presence of the Transco/Williams tower moving forward. Although we've all seen worse (looking at you right up the street, Mercer), this design is nothing special.

Edit: Never mind, looks like they're keeping the volleyball courts but nixing the basketball courts.
Looks like they're also adding a shit load of buildings downtown.

As much as I love this tower and the view it's going to have from Minute Maid Park, I'm really gonna miss the view of 609 Main coming in from 45 North.
Not a bad replacement, but still...

Bottom right by far outshines the others but it’s a moot point. The building, despite being 42-stories, won’t even reach the height of Hess Tower next door which itself is hardly noticeable on the skyline. It’ll be good for infill but that’s about the extent of it. It’ll hardly be a staple of the skyline. Welcome addition tho!
It will be about as tall as the Hess Tower, and the view coming in from 45 North will be extended northward from the Hess Tower. It'll definitely fill a void from that angle.

This is ridiculous. This lot had the opportunity to really connect the area surrounding the Whole Foods and spur new development where those empty shopping centers are. We waited all this time with proposal after proposal for a damn drive thru restaurant.
Maybe if we stare at the circles long enough, we'll "feel" connected to the area

I heard a comment that the contract is 3 years ahead of schedule on this, which sounds like a lot until you remember the original project scope was for over 9 years 😬
For reference, 23 miles of the widest freeway in the world (the Katy Freeway) was built in less time than that.
I don't see how they get away with these kinds of time frames, tbh. This is one of the busiest intersections in North America. I mean...wtf?

It never fails. I would prefer them call it the Galleria instead of Downtown. I always point over to the East (direction of downtown) while its still visible from the freeway and tell them "That is downtown."
About eight or nine years ago, my mom came here from VA with her friend, who to my understanding had never left the Richmond, VA area his whole life (I think he's around 75 years old). My mom used to live here, so she knew about our multiple skylines, but I just remember that they stayed at the LaQuinta Inn on 610 near what is now the Amegy Bank building, and we were about to go to Ninfa's on Navigation. I remember her friend asking where it was, and when I told him it was near downtown, he looked around at all the buildings in the Galleria area and said "this isn't downtown??"

I get it, it's like referring to the entire area in Santa Ana / Costa Mesa around South Cost Plaza as "South Coast". My specific peeve is when people say something like "I'm in the galleria" or "I live in the galleria" when they mean the area not the mall. But i'm just weird like that.
Carlin fan?

What is the time frame on all of this? 10 years? Thats almost impossible to imagine with the way that area is now. I finally know how some of the older members on the forum feel!
I like the synergy of this with the montrose collective building. Both incorporating impressive, by Houston standards, amounts of green in and around the buildings. The modernity of these designs almost feel like they are somehow even more modern than the stuff going up in TMC3.
Also noticed that with the Medistar Tower that's planned next to the new Intercontinental/Latitude development.

Thanks for the update, Urbannizer...looks great.
I wonder if there's anything substantive (yet) to that taller building in the background of the 3rd picture?

Interesting... Wonder how they got that number then....maybe including the nearby parking garage?
The way Wikipedia worded it was "The JPMorgan Chase Tower, formerly Texas Commerce Tower, is a 305.4-meter (1,002-foot), 2,243,013-square-foot (208,382.7 m2),[3] 75-story skyscraper at 600 Travis Street in Downtown Houston, Texas, United States."
Sounds about right for Wikipedia.
