  1. I have 16mm color film that I shot at the Houston Drag Raceway (Dickinson) circa 1962...and later caught Tommy Ivo race the Green Monster there long about '68...I let Ch13 use the clip
  2. holy smoke...I was at the Hitchcock (abandoned airstrip) drags in 1955..was 9 years old
  3. I lived on W. Gray at the time...must have been about 7 years old. Thanks for the photo...the first I've ever seen of the site.
  4. Does anyone remember the building, or have any history on it? Pictures would be even better but I know that's a long shot. I remember it.
  5. There are a lot of stories about the beginning of the Catacombs, but all good things come to an end. The club was making a gazillion dollars and one day Bob Cope arrived and took it over. I went to the Army and the Catacombs was gone by the time I got out. Gone, not changed, gone, and that is the real truth. Am I the only person alive who shot (and still has) film made in the Catacombs? It's a short clip of a band called Deuce is Wild which was part of a promo film I made (1968) Neither the band members or Bob Cope (who struck me as a pompous JERK) were cooperative in my efforts. The film eventually took second place at Rice U Film Fest the same year. Hollar at me if anyone knows any of the members of Duece is Wild...the frontman was Clark Clem..whereabouts unknown.
  6. not S-8...I always shot 16mm...and thanks for the link to houstonartsandmedia I just wrote them seeking an interested video person.
  7. I was there too. They used the sound system from Woodstock, and it was late arriving so the concert was delayed many hours. Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters were there and circulated amoung the audience keeping us entertained. That was the first time I saw Wavy Gravy. Can I assume that Kesey and the Pranksters came to Houston in the bus for that gig? It would make sense, since they drove it to the Dallas Pop Festival two weeks after Woodstock. Before I even knew about the bus, the 'acid test' or who the pranksters and their leader were, I wandered onto the bus (Further) with a 16mm camera in my hand... When I offered the footage to Ken Babbs some 35 years later, he was sooo interested, he offered me a signed copy of the book for my film. I was not amused. According to Maurice Levy (Dallas filmmaker and organizer of the Underground Cinema) I was the only cameraman to get shots of Kesey's bus at the Dallas Pop Festival.
  8. I hung around all of those places... During that time, I shot about 400' of color footage at The Hill. There's several short subjects that could be produced; the Hill, Liberty Hall, downtown festivals...skyline timelapse (1972) ...but I'm just a sprockethead. Anyone know of an hip nostalgia buff who is into digital video today? I need some help posting this film (late 60s early 70s) online.
  9. Good grief, Carol I was at Shearn in 1957...I exchanged disks with a girl named carol...do you remember a Mrs. Collins teaching? I kid you not, the girl I remembered (Carol M.) was shot dead in a bar about forty years :-( I found out way late in life. sorry to have to blurt out this stuff called nostalgia.
  10. Who remembers a film festival one evening at Liberty Hall? Three people, two from Ch2 & myself, produced a three screen extravaganza of all the underground film we'd all shot in Dec or 1971. It was a long night. Then later in '73, I filmed a dance troupe doing a jazz routine on stage Liberty Hall.. Still have the film...wish I had the name of the music used.
  11. Do you still have those? I would love to see them.
  12. Anyone else out there remember any of the concerts? You mentioned the Stones. Were you there that day at the coliseum when they played in 1965? I remember it was $5 general admission. The next time I saw the Rolling Stones (steel wheels, 1989) I shelled out $150. At several of those concerts in the coliseum, I walked a 16mm camera past the gate and shot from the floor, some rare footage.
  13. PICS = Spiral shaped anti-mosquito repellent? I know what went wrong with me...it was running around behind those fogging machines they used to drive up & down the drive-in thearter rows. All that white smoke did me in.
  14. Does anyone have any information on a garage band named Deuces Wild? They played the Houston area around 1968: Catacombs, among others. The lead guitarist was Clark Clem. I have 16mm film of this band.
  15. Anyone remember or have any stories to tell about Liberty Hall which was located at 1610 Chenevert? All sorts of performers played there...Jimmy Reed, Ted Nugent, Bruce Springsteen, NY Dolls, Velvet Underground, Gram Parsons, just to name a few. In early December of 1971 I helped produce a film fest at Liberty Hall. We stretched a 9x36' screen across the stage area and used three 16mm projectors in the balcony. 3 screen images at once. I left around 12 or 1 but the films, I'm told, kept running all night. I might be able to find the flier...not too sure. I also will try to find some photos taken of an evening when a jazz dancing troupe took stage. there...'73 or so.
  16. The three story section to the left was demolished leaving only the administrative offices near the flagpole. Not sure how things look today; I believe the main entrance now faces Chimney Rock instead of Gassmer. Oh, and notice what happened to the mascot Johnnie Reb. They chopped him down and gave back a little short emasculated cartoon of a man...some Yosimite Sam type. Is that not a perfect picture of what has happened across our land in a broader sense?
  17. After hearing the name Utah Carl, the next one I thought of was Curly Fox, lol Last week I found a photo here of Don Red Berry...cowboy actor...who went to elementary school with my dad. My dad told me his real name is (was) Milton Ponboff. I couldn't believe I found a photo of Berry...I recognized him even after 50 years.
  18. This 9' x 24' mural was made for the 40th Reunion of Westbury Rebels
