  1. The talk about Sinclair Oil reminded me that they had a pavillion at the NY World's Fair of 1964-1965. I remember they had a machine where you put in coins and it created a plastic, injection-molded green dinosaur toy on the spot for you. Very cool. BTW, Sinclair is still here in Colorado, and typically one of the least expensive brands you can buy. Edit to add: From Sinclair's website, I found out about the old H-C logo. Remember the slogan? "Drive with care, and buy Sinclair."
  2. I remember S&H, Plaid, & Big Bonus. Also there was Top Value Trading Stamps at some stores. I think they were yellow.
  3. Not sure, but I know Frito-Lay has (had) a plant just north of Rosenberg, on TX 36 I think. I accompanied my son's class on a field trip there about 15 years ago. They made Fritos, Lays, Tostitos, Doritos, etc.
  4. I use the following: Windows XP with Explorer and Firefox Ubuntu Linux with Firefox I have noticed that sometimes Firefox turns off the display of images. If this is your browser, you might check this out. The pics get replaced with words that say "User Posted Image".
  5. I went to HS in Charlotte, NC. We could see the Lance facility from our campus. It is located (or was) on the south end of the city.
  6. I live in Castle Rock, a town of around 30,000 located between Colorado Springs and Denver. The Denver Tech Center is about 12 miles north, Downtown Denver is 30 miles north. Colorado Springs City Limits is 30 miles south and Downtown Colorado Springs is 40 miles south. This community sits along I-25, and is best known for its factory outlet open air mall and the Castle Pines Country Club, where the PGA International was just completed.
  7. HOV should only have egress and access every several exits to work right. The DC area has a freeway that has basically an interior multi-lane that works like that and then outer freeway with access/egress at every interchange. I was in Houston during the contraflow experiment. It was a disaster waiting to happen. Opposing traffic on your side of the freeway, along with the trucks and crews placing and removing pylons. I am surprised there were not many bad, head-on collisions. Given time, it would have happened.
  8. Who else remembers the big flea market that was at SW Freeway and Westpark, on the south side of Westpark and north side of the SWF? I imagine it is long gone, what with the interchange of the new tollway and all. I used to go there when I moved back to Houston from Maryland in 1975. I think it was still around when I moved away back in 1992, but I am not sure.
  9. Griselda mentioned Dirty's. I remember their terrific Chicken Fried Steaks. So they are gone?
  10. There used to be a place I liked called "Charlie's Hamburger Joint" in front of Randall's on Bissonett & Fondren. It looked like an old house, but was built new to look old. Last time I was in Houston, I think it was something else. Also, anyone remember "Burger Mountain Soda Fountain"?
  11. I think the Texans will do well this year. Preseason is just a practice game to let the coaches see the contenders and to get the team used to working in a game environment. I moved from Houston before the Oilers left, but I do follow the Texans, and if I ever get to move back to Houston I will go to some games if I can. Living in Colorado, I can tell you, the Broncos are a religion here, and have earned the reputation as a good team. Yesterday's game was fun to watch, but has no bearing on the regular season.
  12. Didn't there used to be a Busch Gardens at one time out by the Anheiser Busch brewery at East Loop and East Freeway?
  13. The closest affiliate to me is KKZN in Boulder. They carry their own talk show in morning drive (Jay Marvin) and don't carry Springer. I do enjoy Randi Rhodes.
  14. The thread about Monterey House reminds me of another place I used to like. Is Los Tios still around? I loved their puff tortillas with queso.
  15. It would be fun to exchange cities.
  16. You are probably thinking of Gemco, which I believe was an acronym for Government Employees something something something.
  17. Are there any other Sim City 4 players out there? Do any of you have any good models of Houston built for Sim City? How about other cities?
  18. Oh I loved Princes. There was also another burger place back in the late 50s/early 60s on Bellaire/Holcombe near or in Southside Place or West U on the north side of the street called Price's. It was not a great burger like Princes, but more a a standard flat burger like a regular McDonald's burger. I seem to recall they were an early adopter of the drive through concept. And speaking of great hamburgers, I love the flavor of Bellaire Broiler Burger. Are they still around? How about Grandy's? There was also a Steak 'N' Shake on Kirby just north of the SW Fwy for a very short time. Whenever I drive through the midwest on I-70, I always make a point to stop at one.
  19. The most interesting place in Bartlesville: http://www.woolaroc.org/
  20. Hi all, I am looking for a way to get back to Texas, preferrably Houston, but also would go to DFW, San Antonio or Austin. My background and experience is marketing, product development, product management, research & analysis, writing, media relations, etc. My primary industry experience has been in telecom, but I have owned my own business as well as currently working in advertising for a small manufacturing company. I am expert level with Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Access and other programs. I am adept with Photoshop, Illustrator, and others. If anyone has any leads on these types of positions, I would definitely appreciate hearing from you. Thanks in advance, HoustonianInColorado
