  1. This is great from a economic development standpoint for our city, but do we need 3 commercial airports? Is going to hurt IAH in anyway since they will be intl flights only, or would they try to lure in another carrier somehow?

I will say.. with Hobby and SWA being so close, and with both being so much closer to the city core, i would think this could be incentive to move that CRT project to the top of the list.

Imagine 1 line connecting Galveston, Ellington, Hobby, then feeding into the LRT system downtown.. pretty sweet.

  2. That would mean David Dewhurst becomes governor of Texas, which IIRC, is one of Perry's cronies.

Dewhurst is contemplating running for KBH's senate seat. Which means we could be in a position in 2012 if they both win, where the the Texas Congress appoints both our Lt Gov and Gov.

That being said.. hopefully Perry doesn't get the nomination. I'm still waiting for Christie to jump in.

  3. how is it different that tiping at a bar? (literally sitting at the bar on a bar stool) Is it that much more difficult to pop open a beer than put fries and a burger on a serving tray?

Bartending.. at least there's some semblance of skill required (bartending school) and stress (popular busy bar) involved. And I have zero problem tipping a buck or two per drink. Also.. it seems that it's always been the norm, at least for the decade plus I've been of drinking age.

Places like Lil Big and Starbucks.. I feel like they're trying to get away with something. You never saw tip on the receipt until maybe 5 years ago. It's liked they tried to sneak it in hoping people wouldn't realize that they don't have waiters.

Same with Sonic. Had a friend work there in college who tried to tell me it was the expected norm to tip your sonic server. I had some friends who had heard of this, and others like me who had not. Her rationale was that sonic employees make waitress wage + tips.. not minimum wage because Sonic expected their employees to receive tips.

That tells me two things. Sonic is very smart and is getting a good deal. Sonic employees are morons. My stance remains firm.. You're a fast food restaurant. You're not checking up on me. You're not refilling my drinks. I don't care if you walk it out to my car.. That's not enough, I'm not tipping you. I feel that at least half the populace agrees with me and that Sonic employees should realize this. Therefore, of all the fast-food restaurants you could work in, if you choose to work at the one that pays you less than minimum wage, you are a moron.

So yeah, on principle.. I'll tip a bartender $2 who hands me a longneck, but I'm not gonna tip a dude on roller skates who brings me my extra long cheese coney in the rain. Tough $h!t, Sonic guy.

Add: I googled it.. and though it is up to the discretion of the sonic franchise.. it seems more have switched to minimum wage.

  4. Yeah, Kragthorpe was OC at A&M when I was there.. brought us our only Big XII championship. That's pretty tough on him and his family.

Preseason polls.. well.. I can see why some say they're meaningless, but ya gotta start somewhere. SEC deservedly gets lots of respect, LSU finished top 10 and with a bowl win so I don't really see them as overrated.

A&M - I can understand if people think they're slightly over ranked, though I'd say anyone that thinks they don't belong in the top 15 is high. Then again, the next 5 below us all lost their bowl games as well, so do they deserve a slightly higher ranking, doubtful.

I think Auburn and TCU got downgraded a wee bit much, despite losing their starting QBs.

I think with all the SECede talk the past 2 summers and what I see as inevitability of Aggies heading east, I'll be following SEC football more closely this season.

I don't really know what to think about the longhorns this yr.. two coordinator changes and still have Gilbert under center.. I'll be honest, I hope they have another season of suck.. but who knows.

  5. I know it's slightly early... but between conference expansion talks last week and the coaches poll this week.. I'm all psyched up for the only sport that really matters.

It's effin College Football Time !!

I've set up this years College Football pick'em over at ESPN.

Group name: Haif 2011 and as usual, password : Haif

Playing with confidence points this year.

Please have your profile or team name contain your Haif name so we know who the competition is.

I'll bump this as the month progresses so we get our usual dozen or so signed up. The more, the merrier.

If anyone has any thoughts on conference expansion, teams over/underrated in the coaching poll, early Heisman favorites, anything relevant to the upcoming season.. bring it.

I know it's slightly under 4 weeks away.. but opening weekend is going to have 5 consecutive days of college football. How awesome is that !

  6. I think Houston would look nicer if we had less st. augustine and more bermuda type grasses.

Both are well suited to our climate, but from hitting up the google, It seems the fact that Bermuda grass is considered an invasive weed might be the reason it is used more for controlled areas like turf athletic fields, and less in front yards where it easily invades flowering beds and other areas it shouldn't - driveway cracks, between pavers, etc.

Also.. Bermuda doesn't grow in shade very well.

    http://www.houstonla...h.com/grass.htm

Zoysia seems to be the 3rd choice for Houston.. don't know much about it but it appears to have the looks of Bermuda without the invasive nature.

All that being said.. I believe St. Augustine is the cheapest and most readily available, so you're probably not going to convince most Houstonians to change

I will agree with you in personal preference for the Bermuda though... barefoot, there's no comparison.

  7. so how the heck are UHD students supposed to get to class?

You never click on the source links do you.

There is an answer to your question.. but I'm not going to cater to your laziness. Click the link. Hell, you don't even have to read, your answer can be found in the pretty picture.

  8. Well, not according to this map

    http://bit.ly/eW4TMs

(Takes a while to render - apparently 1500000000000 dpi resolution is required and the name of every street in Houston is relevant.)

I think graphically they just chose one of the two colors to show once the lines joined.. they could have gone the other way.

But it has always been the case that both lines would share track into downtown.. as opposed to East Line users forced to switch trains at the Bastrop Station.

  9. Patience is a virtue.1

You need to learn to get your tickets sooner to have more seat selection.

If you're traveling alone.. See if there are any single seats available near the front of the plane when you check in.

If you insist on ranking passengers to see who merits getting off first, I can think of numerous other groups that would go before you.

    1. Women and children (obviously)

    2. People with connecting flights.

    3. People that need to really use the restroom.

    4. Me.

    6. Clowns.

    5. People without carry-on luggage.

    6. People with carry-on luggage.

    7. D-List celebrities

1Except on houston freeways.. get out of my way.

  10. I'm not sure if I would go to a restaurant that was located in a shipping container though.

Maybe I'm not as uber hipster as I thought.

I can see it working for a small cafe with outdoor seating - like here. or a bigger restaurant ...like here... but only if they use the containers as building blocks for bigger areas or volumes. But that rendering is showing mostly stand-alone containers and nothing more than 2 deep configurations. 15-16' of depth doesn't give you lots of design room for a sit down restaurant. ..or retail.

  11. There is a thread on this already for when they were proposing this for up in the Acres Homes area.

Their website has been up for a few years now with that same rendering. Since a more realistic rendering that address, for starters, their mega parking issues hasn't materialized, this tells me they're not closer to ever getting this project off the ground.

  12. Ugh.

I thought I was doing y'all a favor by not putting one on there. The selections aren't that great.

I'll get working on the following mashup for your next vid...

    Ozzy - Crazy Train

    Megadeath - Train of Consequences

    O'Jays - Love train

  13. It's not a subway.. it's an underpass.. Same thing we have all over the city.

And reading chron comment after chron comment about flood potential.. that constant level of buffoonery makes me so furious i wanna go start punting kittens.

  14. Deja Vu all over again.

They have westheimer blocked off between dunlavey and park - about 3 fire engines along with numerous police and mobility response vehicles present.

  15. Was seeing your Foley's the highlight of your trip ??

I still find your retail anchor-tinted glasses to be very odd.

You're the only haifer I know that seems to measure and value a neighborhood or area by its big box stores.

It reminds me of when I tease a friend for being stuck living out in Katy, and they respond with "We got a Krogers, a Walmart, an AMC, and 4 Olive Gardens all within 5 minutes; What more do we need?"
