  1. Most of those fast food hot dogs chain restaurants called "Der Wienierschnitzel" have closed. Are there still any open in Houston? They use to serve Kraut Dogs and Polish Sandwiches.
  2. I wonder if a millionaire opened a real big roller rink next to a five-screen drive-in movie theatre somewhere in Houston if it would suceed or fold?
  3. Every big city has some "greasy spoon" diners that have been in the same spot for at least 50 years.
  4. I just looked at the movie theatre ads in today's Chronicle. I counted the number of movies now playing at those two 30-screen theatres. They added up to less than 30. What am I missing?
  5. I'm wanting to remember a short-lived restaurant chain called "Roy Roger's Roast Beef Sandwich". I'm picturing it somewhere around Gulfgate.
  6. The Tower of Babel was intended to be taller than all of them. But the construction crew got to where they couldn't talk to each other, so they quit.
  7. I guess I'm behind the changing times. Earlier today, I finished up taking all of the pictures on a Fuji disposable camera and dropped it off at Wal-Mart for developing. I still don't have a digital camera, but both of my parents each have their own. Am I the only one on this forum who still takes photos the "old-fashioned" way? I think I can say that about 99% of you use digital cameras, especially Subdude.
  8. Well, do you now think that Houston will become a Chocolate, Jazz, & R&B city?
  9. I've gotten fired from many jobs. But there's one I've always patted myself on the back for. I got tired of a supervisor's treatment of me. So I "blew the whistle" on her to the U.S. Attorney. Naturally, her superior fired me when he found out. I filed for unemployment compensation. He then lied about having fired me. When I told TWC to check with the U.S. Attorney, he didn't contest my appeal, and I was approved to receive unemployment compensation. In that instance, getting fired worked to my advantage.
  10. I remember when I was in high school (Beaumont Forest Park) back in the 1970s we played Pasadena Dobie, Houston Forest Brook and Houston Smiley. Do any of those still exist? Also, does Houston Scarborough (I don't know if I'm spelling it right) still exist?
  11. I looked on a street map of Houston. Telephone Road is much longer than I thought it was. It starts on the far south side of town. It doesn't go all the way to the far north side of town, but it goes quite a ways up there. It should have an extensive history behind it.
  12. I remember as a kid back in the 1960s we would go to Galveston and remember seeing Gaido's back then. I wish that I could remember some of the old restaurants around Gulfgate. On this same category on a topic called "Tour de Telephone" Subdude posted a bunch of photos of old businesses including restaurants. I think that one of them was Gaido's. I know that he did post one of the Tel-Wink Drive-In Restaurant which is/was located near Gulfgate on Telephone Road at Winkler Drive.
  13. I was wondering if the tallest building in Houston is taller than the tallest building in Dallas?
  14. I've seen billboards advertise vasectomy reversals. If more men driving on the freeway who see those signs will patronize those clinics, then there would be less abortion signs. But my favorite are booze billboards. I'd rather pull into a liquor store than a vasectomy clinic.
  15. Well, I profess my ignorance about beer/ale. I stopped drinking beer back in 2001. Since then I've drank only "spirits". I keep a bottle of whiskey/gin/vodka, etc. in my cabinet. Whenever I want to get a "buzz" I simply break out the bottle. It doesn't have to be kept cold the way that beer does. I heard that in Germany beer isn't consumed cold. My uncle told me that they drink it at room temperature.
  16. If there's a spell check feature on here, I don't know where it is. I'm in a public library. There's a big dictionary already opened on a podium. If I'm having trouble spelling something, I have to walk over to it, look it up, write it down, then come back here to the computer.
  17. I don't think that I've ever drank ale. Did you actually drink ale when you went to that place?
  18. Is that in the city of Houston itself, or does that figure include suburbs?
  19. When I worked for a geographical firm, a house/building was identified by what street the front door was on. The back and side doors weren't to be noted on my report.

    City Life

Everything in life has a positive and a negative aspect. I was simply trying to point out what I thought were the positive aspects of living in the city versus a rural area. And I just like big schools, but I acknowledge that big doesn't always mean better.

Yes, I've never played with a full deck. Do I interpret your simple "OK" to mean that you agree or disagree with what I said?
  22. Well, I'm glad for you. I wish both of you the best. As far as my credit goes, the negative items will be deleted in the year 2012. As far as women, I've concluded that there will probably never be one in my life again. But I did say "probably". If I would affix a percentage, I would say that there is a 75% chance that there will never be a woman in my life again. I've never been legally married. My only child came from a woman whom I lived with.

I take it that most, if not all of you like city life. I recently realized that rural life isn't for me. In the city, you simply go to work at your job, then go home. If you need something, go to the store and buy it. There's no need to do "chores" when you get home from work or school. And I think that 5A high school football is awesome!
  24. All of those skyscrapers in Downtown Houston naturally contain many offices. Offices are mostly for businesses. Are there enough businesses that occupy at least half of all of those offices? Or are most of the offices in the building vacant?
