  2. Parkwood is at OST and Cambridge, just west of the VA Hospital. I understand that it's owned by Baylor, and is a large brick garden apartment complex with over 100 live oaks on the property, hardwoods, good square footage, and very reasonable rents (try $690 for 1233 sq. ft. 2 BR + den apt.) Most of the residents work in the Med Center, obviously. Many of them are post-docs and researchers, lots of Asian families. Lots of the families planted gardens there. Residents were given notice on September 1 to vacate by November 1. It's going to be demolished. Anybody know the history of this place? I

  5. I was walking to the TMC commons yesterday when I noticed that the fenced in area next to the Methodist Research Center construction site said "Texas Heart Institute Phase 1 Expansion". Anybody have any info on this? It's right next to the current THI building - between it and the Methodist Research construction.

  7. The highly visible plot of land on Rice's campus on the corner of Main St and University Blvd. will house The Collaborative Research Center. Designed to be LEED certified by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, the tower will contain 477,000 square feet for class/lab space for bioscience and biotech research. Rice will operate the center in conjunction with Baylor, MD Anderson, UT Health Science, Texas Children's and a host of other TMC institutions. The building will have 3 levels of underground parking and 10,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space that faces Main St. Plans call for the design
  8. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/6083117.html "Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine have begun holding serious discussions that could lead to a merger of the state's top private university and one of the country's best medical schools. A merger would bring Rice the reputational enhancement it has long desired and Baylor the security of a university affiliation, which is often necessary to keep medical schools afloat financially. Baylor is one of only nine stand-alone medical schools in the United States."

  10. Does anyone have any memories from times in University/College? Any strange acts of vandalism or teenage stupidity? Any tips on how to stay in college? My sister is coming back from DePauw University (in Greencastle, Indiana) for Thanksgiving. She just graduated from Lamar High in Houston last May. She says that at DePauw a bunch of kids vandalized a deer statue donated by an alumn by making a failed attempt to saw off its legs. Then some kids rode the statue in the nude during Halloween.
  11. From the Chron: Dr. Feigin made city a major player in pediatric medicine Dr. Ralph Feigin, who transformed Houston into one of the nation's premier centers of pediatric care, died Wednesday. He was 70. A tireless advocate for children's health in Houston and worldwide, he grew Baylor College of Medicine pediatrics from a small, barely funded department into the nation's biggest and best funded, made Texas Children's Hospital one of the nation's elite children's hospitals and trained almost half of Harris County's current population of pediatricians. Mrs. Porchman frequently commented on h
  12. Baylor to break ground on first hospital in Houston By TODD ACKERMAN and BRETT BRUNE Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle Baylor College of Medicine plans to break ground on its first-ever hospital in July, less than a year after its short-lived partnership with St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital foundered. Baylor today released new details of the plan, which call for 1.1 million square feet of construction, including 256 beds, to be finished by 2010. A planned second phase will bring those numbers to 600 beds and 2.7 million square feet. "This hospital will give Baylor the control of its clinical mis
  13. Med Center Crowne Plaza to turn out lights Mary Ann Azevedo Houston Business Journal After more than three decades in operation, the Crowne Plaza Hotel Houston-Medical Center will close its doors next month. The closing comes on the heels of last month's purchase of the property -- located at 6701 Main St. -- by Baylor College of Medicine. The Crowne Plaza will permanently close its doors on Dec. 18, according to the hotel's Web site and Baylor officials. The property is one of three Main Street tracts that Baylor purchased from Houston-based The Redstone Cos. in a transaction that closed o
